Connect your tv audio out by optical(toslink) cable to an optical input on the receiver and switch audio inputs when watching netflix, etc.

If I am not mistaken, either in the ex500 or this thread, someone took a micro shot of the pannel of the HX701 and it's the same pannel as the ex500, which is a samsung PVA pannel and not Sharp's UV2A.

hughh: HDTVTest.co.uk have tested the KDL-40EX703 and they say that the KDL40EX703 is also the first Sony-branded HDTV they have reviewed that uses a Sharp UV2A panel, rather than the Super PVA type which Sony has been manufacturing with Samsung for half a decade now.>>>

They say that the default setting (5) for the backlight is too high and recommend 2 as setting. With the lower setting it also lowers the power consumption.

I keep mine usually at 3. It all depends on how bright your living room is. On a completely dark room, it's still possible to go down to 1 and still get enough brightness. Another advantage is deeper
blacks.

My 46HX701 receives automatic updates from Sony. Last night the TV was upgrade to software version PKG4.068AAL. This is the third upgrade I've received and Sony usually lists on their website what was included in the update. Sony hasn't listed on their website what improvements/fixes were included in the new update and still lists the previous version 4.054.

Does anybody know what's new in 4.068?

Picked up my 55HX701 from Costco last Sunday. Yes I became a Costco member just to buy this TV.

I returned my 40EX500 and bought the 40HX701 at Sam's Club, and I'm kinda dissapointed in that this uses the same sub-pixel structure as the EX500 in the 40". I'm also shocked that it is 240hz with the same sub-pixel structure as a 120hz tv. I was kinda hoping for the B750/XBR9 sub-pixels or the new type of S-PVA sub-pixels, or a Sharp made panel. I wonder if this set can do "Deep Color" as it claims because it would have to be 10-bit, but this same sub-pixel structure is in the EX500 and Samsung C630 (maybe the C650 too) which are rated at 8-bit to my knowledge.

I also have a lot of clouding on my set, and the fact the "Deep Black Panel" is a misnomer doesn't really help. Even with the Backlight set on Min, the set is too bright in a dark room. I don't want to use the Eco features but maybe I should...

Enough with the griping though . The Monolith Design looks great and for some reason the tv seems sharper than my EX500 or C630. I also like that the 240hz seems to have improved the gray-to-gray response time to be near unnoticable.

Just a quick question.

I purchased a 52" EX701 last week and now they got the 55" HX701 at the same price. Should I go and exchange it?

I'm assuming the picture and the audio quality is the exact same, but how is the screen compare as the HX701 is made of glass?

the Ex701 is a LED tv with 120hz with Bravia Engine 2. the HX701 is a CCFL LCD with 240hz and Bravia Engine 3. The HX701 also share the new monolith design while the ex701 does not.

It's hard to just both screen. the ex701 since it's a led is subject to clouding although the HX701 is also the same for some reason.

So as far as quality wise which one would you or anyone pick? I don't really care about it being LED or LCD nor the 3" advantage over the my 52" EX701.Since all I care about is quality, especially the details when watching a soccer game

Literature on my EX700 (EX701 at Costco) indicates Bravia Engine 3.

If you don't mind about not getting the "slim" tv, because the led is slimer, I'd go with the hx701.

That's difficult to answer and something you would have to decide for yourself. I have the 60EX700 in a very bright living room and the TV excels, especially in sports. I have only seen the HX701 at Costco and due to the bright living room, the first thing I look for is reflection problems. This HX tv has big problems with refections as seen at Costco. However, if your viewing environment is different than mine, you may find this TV to be sensational, as many people here have stated.

The clouding is a phenomenon affecting the non-uniform brightness LCD panels. It is an anomaly encountered when the backlight is not uniform. This is especially noticeable on dark images or totally black. As you can see in the picture above, some areas of the image appear more clear (lighter) than others.

However, this defect is only visible on a totally black image. We did not feel any discomfort when viewing different scenes from our movies.

which picture mode do most of you use? or is there a (for the most part) agreed upon custom set up, if so which is it?

For TV content I use the standard settings and for DVD and Blu-ray I use the theater mode. For the settings of your HX700 you can use the settings of HDTVtest.co.uk for the EX700 because the HX700 uses also the Sharp UV2A LCD panel. The backlight setting should be lowered to 3. The default setting for the backlight is 5 which is a bit too bright.

Has anyone seen any more test reviews or calibration info for the KDL**HX701 or the KDL**HX703 (Aussie model) besides those posted here?

Toski: hristolav2 did a post in the ex500 topic and info shows the 700 line will have sharp UV2A panels, ex700, nx700 and hx700 all use the same panels. This is the same post as you mentioned.

I tried looking for that post but couldn't find it. I know my 40HX701 has a Samsung panel because I see the <<< centers of the partially-lit sub-pixels. This is the same sub-pixel structure used in the 40EX500 and Samsung 40C630.

Also, people have said the monolith has "smoked glass" but mine is clear as day.

Thanks for all the valuable information - I pulled the plug 2 days back and brought the 55HX701 home I was looking to buy a plasma (54G25), but after I saw the 701 @ Costco, I was blown away! Excellent PQ and blacks!!!

Just picked up the 46HX701 at Costco. (Grabbed the last one they had.) So far we are happy with it -- this is our first HDTV. We've been trying to hold out for DirecTV to release their new DirecTV HD with Tivo receiver before buying a new TV, but our old SD TV finally died yesterday.

Does anyone know if the KDL-46HX701 can use Yahoo Widgets? (For weather, etc.)? There is an option to link the TV to Yahoo via the Sony Essentials account website, but I see no Yahoo widgets on the TV, just the Yahoo Video link in the video menu. (Even after "refreshing internet content".)

Appreciate any help/info.

On my 60EX700, only Yahoo video is available, no weather or any other Yahoo activities.

More news on panel switching Sony TVs. There is a sequence on the remote control to get into the service mode. There you can find the parts.

P.S. I cleaned very gently a stand with moist cotton cloth and unfortunately it left scratches on back part of it what means that plastic used is poor quality...

Use dish washing soap and water to clean the surface of your tv. Do not use alcohol or any other aggressive cleaning product.
