I was being a bit picky because the Samsung I returned had more of a smooth picture but not as sharp as the Sony. It tended to mask any artifacts. My buddies XBR has the same artifacts so I take it as being somewhat normal for Sony tv's. Then again, Sony does have a smoking picture and the motionflow is the most effective of all the tv manufacters. Basically, it looks more real than the rest. Btw, the HX701 is only sold at the Sony store and Future Shop in Canada. No other retailer carries this great set.

Yep, futureshop, beside sony, are the only one carrying that TV. SD and poor HD won't look great on the hx701. But if you do get a good feed, it looks great.

I hope you get better than me and get one without too much clouding. I bought and return 2 hx701 because of clouding. I'm affraid to try a 3rd one since the futureshop near me are looking at me with big eyes everytime I walk in the store.

My settings have Been the same on both inputs clouding I didn't see at all yesterday when I first got it but it seems to have appeared? I can't notice it at all with fullscreen content so I'm sorta shrugging it off , I had the samsung ln55c610 which I returned for REAL bad uniformity issues , and I got the samsung plasma pn50c7000 which had terrible IR so I returned that and got this 701 which I still LOVE , I bought 4 year warranty so I'm not overly concerned , lcds in general all have these issues you'll be at the store every day trying to find a perfect one it just won't happen, plus I'm sick of going to future shop and waiting in that return line , I love this set love the way it looks and the clouding I do have isn't an issue on letterboxes movies just pureblack screens I see now and again during loading screens on games

Knock on wood (hard) so far no issues with any clouding on mine. I think my search is done!

I've bought and kept 3 hdtv's (32"pany,40"sony,46"samsung)in the past 5 years and they all had clouding of some sort. It never bothered me then, but now that I want a 55", everything is more in your face. I too hate going back to FS for a 3rd time but I hope I make the right choice.

I was caught between the Samsung C610 and the Sony HX701. Forget price for a sec, the only difference I see is the Samsung picture is smoother but less detail, the Sony has some jaggies but is much sharper. None of the 4 tv's I returned had clouding but the viewing angle on the first 3 (except on the G25) were brutal. I think I should have kept the Sony. I definitely don't want to play the Samsung panel lottery. I've read on the forums, there's no guarantee that the preferred panels will be cloud free. Sorry Samsung, get your act together. New Sony in my home by Sunday.

seriously, go in to picture settings and turn black correction starting from off, low, med, then high. In a darker scene you will see the cloudiness go away set to high. Does it completely? no...but its better.

Man, when I get this TV set to what I feel I like is ok, then I feel the picture is to dark. I guess everyones eyes are different. I didn't see some of the things with Samsung that people are saying. I'm convinced the Samsung 6 series looked better on almost every station I observed.

Anyone here have any experience with Vizio? I know a lot of people that have and love them. They seem to be smiling because they saved $2-3 hundred from buying the Sony or Samsung name brands.

I mentioned yesterday that I was seeing alot of noise in dark scenes on this tv, I figured out why last night. It appears that Directv has a heavy dose of Green Bias that it puts out. I'm not sure if its just this receiver, or maybe this tv points out flaws more than my Panny G10. Anyway, I was messing with my settings last night, and I'm amazed at the difference. Below are my settings, and to me, used to my calibrated plasma, these look awesome.

First of All I turned power saving to low
Picture setting Cinema
Backlight 1...Can be bumped up if you have a brighter viewing area
Picture 90
Brightness 48
Color 48
Color Temp Warm 2
Sharpness 1
Motionflow Standard
Cinemotion Auto 2

Gamma +1

Everything else off

White Balance
R Gain -1
G Gain -1
B Gain -2
R Bias 0
G Bias -8 (may not need to reduce as much if not directv)
B Bias +1

Now in dark scenes I dont see any noise because a black sky at night,is now pitch black, it seems the green bias being off was making dark scenes noisy. As mentioned, this is more for a dark viewing area hence the cinema setting. I will mess with custom next, but by keeping warm 2, the white balance should carry over.

As you saw, every source has its quirks. I also have DirecTV and even different channels have different color biases.

Every once in a while I see some noise in the scenes. If I change channels or the program ends and something new comes on, the noise is gone.

Anyway, thanks for posting your settings. I am still adjusting mine slightly. I also have the fleshtone correction on low. Otherwise mine looked a little green.

I just picked up my 40 HX301 at Sam's. Very nice. Instead of Buying the Dongle ($80), I thought that I could run a Cat 5e ($40) cable from my wireless router to the ethernet port on the TV. I have the Physical connection when I perform the Network Setup. But everything else fails. Everything else in the home requires us to input the password when attaching to the WiFi in the Home. Two Questions. Setup Guide Suggests Cat 7 wire for LAN. Do I need it? Do I need to hook up the Cat 5e to the Modem instead of the Router? Any help here would be appreciated.

I ended up getting the Cisco wireless bridge from Sears for $80. You set up the bridge first to see your wireless router first (including any security protocols you have) then move to tv and plug with short CAT5 to back of tv. So far it works great! No issues at all. Works with pretty much all router formats b,g,n.

Based upon all of the previous information in this thread, the Bridge could then connect other hardware as well to the WiFi in the home. Since we only have a bluray & Wii, I really didn't think of getting something that would allow for more. I guess I am out the $40. Thank you for your help.

Did you happen to notice if they also had the 40"?

This particular bridge, recommended by Sony, only supports 1 device. There are other ones out there which support multiple devices.

I suspect this is the one you are suggesting.

Linksys Wet610n Wireless N Ethernet Bridge Ieee 802.11n draft 54Mbps . Sears has is for $91.00. I am not familiar with Bridges but I understand the concept. WiFi Capable hardware that doesn't come with the LAN can be plugged into the bridge that does have the connection to the Wireless Router. I think that the Blu Ray I have is the same way as the TV. If this isn't the right one please let me know. Thanks again.

Yup, that is the bridge. I bought it for $89 at Sears last week. So far, it works great. Just follow the setup instructions included.

I didn't see anything but the 55" in the HX701 and I did try to look but it was awfully crowded on the TV aisles.

My Costco doesn't even have the 55 inch. Gone....

Perhaps Sam's?

Hi guys. I just bought this TV in Canada and need help!

In picture mode, it only gives me the option of standard, vivid and custom. In the manual it states there should be options of cinema and plenty more. Is there another way to access these cinema modes?

Depress SCENE on your remote for the predetermined settings.

Can anyone tell me the distance from the top of the TV to the top set of mounting holes?

Are the mounting holes centered vertically on this TV? I think I saw it mentioned they are off-centered a bit...a few inches higher than center?

Thanks!

Sorry - I can't get to mine to measure.
I can try and measure mine, is it a 55 youre interested in getting specs on? There's also a detailed PDF out there that has lotsa measurements in it that might help you, though I've never looked closely at it to see what it does and doesn't have.

Doh! Gee, would've helped if I mentioned the size...I was asking about the 40". I found out it's about 6".

Thanks!

Seems this thread sorta died. I kept the 40" Bravia. To be quite honest, it drained my energy worrying about getting a great TV. I figured for $698, I would live with this one until it dies. I didn't feel like going back to Sams club and swapping again. I did start looking at the 40" Samsung 3D LED which looked awesome (should for $1600) but even those will have there downfalls. Probably will go out after 1 year.
