No format war.

Dreamworks simply has a deal with Samsung for exclusive distrubution on some 3-D titles through bundling with their products. This obviously won't last forever, and those titles will, after a certain point in time, be available through regular channels.

Is Monsters vs. Aliens in the box? Is that going to be the only "official" 3D Blu Ray movie available... starting tomorrow?

Lee, there have been many other converted films released to theaters already. These include:


SUPERMAN RETURNS (4 sequences in IMAX version)
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (last 20 mins in IMAX version)
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE (first 10 mins in IMAX version)

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968 colorized version) was converted to 3-D and recently debuted in an outdoor LA screening.

PIRANHA 3-D was shot flat and is undergoing a conversion (this was intended from the outset, as was the case with ALICE IN WONDERLAND.)

There are plenty more in process, both catalog and yet to be released movies. Some IMAX documentaries have undergone conversion as well. Look for more and more movies to be planned as 2-D to 3-D conversions all along; some directors apparently feel this is the easier way to go. I've heard talk that the new CONAN and FLASH GORDON projects will take this route.

OK - like I said - AFAIK.

Wow.... That is truly lame. So you buy the 3D Blu Ray player, and don't even get a movie inside that box? Instead you have to buy a 3K tv as well to get the special starter kit for free. How nice of them.

There has to at least be some kind of sampler disc.... right?

Correct - then in April, Panasonic will add the 3D Blu-ray Disc "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs to it's bundle

OK I get it.

Sucks though. I hope this doesn't mean 3D BD movies are only going to be available depnding on whatever new hardware becomes available. I understand dangling content to pull you to their brand but to deny content to those of us ready to go is a pretty s****y thing to do.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that you can buy the Samsung starter bundle separately from the TV and Blu Ray player. Sure, if you buy the TV as well, then you get it free, but you don't HAVE to buy the TV too. I'm not sure how much they sell that starter pack for separately.

Also Disney has said they will have a demo disc with old and new 3D movies featured.


It will require a 3D capable television and a 3D capable blu-ray player, but The Hollywood Reporter has relayed Disney’s announcement that the newly established Blu-ray 3D standard will be embraced and rushed to market beginning with at least three releases this year (all presumably around the holiday season): A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. Perhaps it’s too soon, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Disney/Pixar’s UPthrown into the mix shortly thereafter either.

At D23 Expo, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment demo’d a prototype of a 3D home system from Panasonic. The home system, which uses special shutter-oriented glasses to alternate between eyes, almost faithfully recreates the current 3D movie-going experience at home.

The article also refers to a demo disc Disney is supplying to Blu-ray 3D manufacturers for distribution with their systems which includes the 1953 3D short Working for Peanuts starring Chip and Dale, last seen in theaters attached to Meet the Robinsons.

Toy Story 1 and 2 were re-rendered with two viewpoints, from the original 3D model files. This is "native" stereoscopic 3D, and not a 2D-to-3D conversion, where an algorithm "guesses" the depth of pixels based on color hues and shading.

Actually for the 2D to 3D film conversions that the studios do, isn't it not (or not usually) an algorithm that guesses the depth but instead is the computer operators who tell it the depth of each object by drawing around the objects manually and telling it where to position it in 3d space?

It's at least some of the 3D TVs and 3D BD players that will have options to do automatic conversion of 2D to 3D video.

Yes, for elaborate productions, such as movie post-production, the algorithms get some human support, but it's still mostly the algorithm doing the finer details of depth. The human operation alone would result in some cut-out diorama look of the scenes.

The 2D-to-3D converter in TVs, on the other hand, will not have the luxury of a human going over the result before presenting it to the viewer. I expect ghastliness.
