I just got off the phone with Zones. They haven't heard squat about shipping the Ceton. Anyone heard anything from anyone that has contacts with Ceton?

Check out the post in this thread that contains an update from Jeremy Hammer of Ceton that he posted in The Green Button forums:

Their is such a HIGH demand for these... Those of us who are just waiting for the release will not see an "IN STOCK" for months after release. Ceton isn't a very big company, I just don't see a large amount of cards filling all these preorders. I should have preordered months ago, but alas, don't have $400 kicking around.

Has Ceton or anyone else said what the initial quantities are? While the inquiries on HTPC forums make it sound high, I bet it's not nearly as high as what you expect.

If I understand correctly people in most Comcast markets are still going to be limited to using two tuners due to SDV / Tuning Adapter limitations? If so, any bet's there will be more than a few available as open stock returns, or on eBay after people discover they can't use them like they expected? Either way, I'm definitely happy doing a wait and see on this one; I expect by this winter I'll be able to get my hands on one easy enough if it turns out to work like I need it to...

No that's not correct. You would use two of the Cisco tuning adapters for the Ceton card. The Cisco adapters will support two tuners per device. It's no different then using the Cisco tuning adapters on ATI Digital Cable Tuners. The thing that I hate about my tuning adapters is they are another box that I have to stuff somewhere in the cabinet.

Interesting. If that's the case why do the people using the Moxi not use two of the TA's? I realize they only have three tuners, but given the choice of only using two tuners it seems like at least some people would give it a go? Or is there some physical limitation with the Moxi?

Let me clarify my setup. I have three DCTs and I'm using three Tuning Adapters. Each one is attached to a tuner because the tuners are seperate entitites even though the TAs can support 2 tuners each. You need a usb port for each TA, and each TA needs a coax cable attached to it so it can talk back to the headend. I think in the Moxi box only has two usb ports I think. Not completely positive on that.

I also dunno if I'd say "most" Comcast markets - I live in a pretty darn big one (Seattle region), we aren't using switch digital.

Did Comcast buy up somebody in your area? They've taken over the Memphis market, but I don't know what the infrastructure is here (yet)...

I'm just wondering whether or not Silicon Dust, which is supposedly has their CableLabs cert now, will have an easier time with production. Just a real question. Ceton's big issue now seems to be production and parts availability, based on what their rep has said in TGB forums.

SiliconDust just seems more prepared to actually manufacture their product. I'm wondering if Ceton gets to the market first but SD is the one that has real commercial availability first.

Unless SD can get a product into people's hands in the next two or so weeks, Ceton will beat them. Ceton finished their test run to ensure the products will work in the main run. Their main run is either going on now or will be any day now.

Silicon Dust does NOT have CableLabs certification yet and don't have their beta boards in beta testers hands yet, so it's extremely unlikely that they'll ship this year - more likely 2nd quarter next year if everything goes well. Ceton has stated that production of the 1st batch is done and the cards are going through the quality control process now. The timetable they've given should put the first batch if cards in the customers hands in about a week and a half from now assuming the preorder stores get them shipped out quickly once they get them.

The last I heard was that SD hasn't even built units for their beta testing program yet, which could span several months or longer. I'd be surprised if the SD tuners are available by Christmas.

Concerning the size of the Ceton company, that's completely irrelevent to the situation. Ceton just designs and markets the units. They're having them manufactured by a 3rd party in India from what I understand. Hardly anyone in this countyry manufactures consumer electronics anymore. It just isn't economically feasible to do so and still offer a competitive price while making any sort of profit. You can thank the economy and your friendly neighborhood unions for forcing manufacturers to look offshore for affordable labor.

If SD's feeds are to be believed, they are doing their cable labs testing this week. So, there you go on that. Yes, probably Christmas is what I'm thinking.

I understand farming out production. Since we all seem convinced that we'll see them in hand in the next 2 weeks, I'll mark this post and we'll see how it goes. If they start streaming out in 2 weeks then I'm good with that

I heard SD was doing the testing with Cable Labs but they still need to go through beta testing after that from what I recall. In any case, Ceton's got a pretty good market jump on SD, even with the delays.

I'm not in a big rush to get the tuner, but I would like to get it installed and working before the new fall season begins so I don't have to futz around with swapping season passes between my HTPC and Tivos.

My understanding is that SD is doing a preliminary round of testing with Cable Labs that will allow them to proceed with the beta units. They will need to do additional testing with Cable Labs later with the final design - from what I've read, that round of testing is more extensive. I'd be SHOCKED if the SD Cable Card product shipped this year.

Same here - having the Ceton arrive in the next few weeks should give us time to get it up and running and work out any potential kinks in our systems before the fall TV season gets rolling.

I certainly hope Zones has a good record of when orders were placed, and follow "first in, first out." I placed my order on the day the link was posted here (13 March), as I recall. I'd be disappointed if I had to keep waiting for subsequent batches to ship before I got mine.

Well, its August... Anyone get another email from Ceton yet???

Hi everyone, I had a very busy day today sorry. Instead of sending a newsletter I'm just going to tell you what I know here. The first batch of boards have been made and are currently going though testing. So far everything is going well. At the current schedule they will be shipped out of India at the end of this week and should be in the US mid-next week. At that point they will be shipped to the distributors (zones, cannon and fluid) who will send them to their individual customers. I'll keep you up to date when they ship from India. Thanks, -Jeremy

So the cards are expected to be in the distributors hands (Zones, Cannon, and Fluid) around the end of this week and those of us who preordered should expect to start receiving them sometime next week - the exact timing depending on how far we are from the distributor we ordered from, whether we opted to pay extra for overnight shipping, etc. There's also the caveat that something could still cause an additional delay - customs dragging their feet, etc., but let's hope that it's smooth sailing (flying, actually) at this point. Also note that the first batch may or may not cover all the preorders, so your place in the queue could have an impact on whether you receive one from the first batch or not.

So if the original newsletter is accurate, the first batch of boards should now be arriving in the US and being shipped to the distributors. However long it takes to reach them, they can then start sending them to those who preordered. I imagine it will be another week before anyone receives anything.

As a note to all, I just got off the phone with Zones. I put my order in on the first day of the preorder.

She said she had spoken to the team assigned to the Ceton card yesterday afternoon and they confirmed they have received them and are starting to process orders. She said an email will be send stating the credit card was charged, and at that point the information will again be visible in the Zones account info page.

She said they should start flying out of Zones very shortly.
Yeah, CannonPC is sending their customers emails that the card is shipping out the week of August 9, and they are going to be charging customers who are getting one from this shipment in advance over the next couple days to try and get them out as quickly as possible.
