Why a GTA 4 thread now? Only because I took it out of the "shrink wrap" just now. By taking it out of the shrink wrap I mean, I bought this during one of the steam sales for $7.50 and just now started playing it.
Since 1997 I've known about the GTA series. My friends downloaded it (illegally I suppose) back in the college dorms. At the time it really didn't look all that appealing to me, so I never played. Fast forward 10 years... The whole hot coffee, steal cars, kill hookers, etc really turned me off. It just seemed totally immature, something that 13 year olds would think is the coolest thing in the world.
If steam never had this for sale for $7.50, I never would have gotten it. The reason I did was because it had gotten a few perfect 10 scores, which we all know is very rare. For $7.50 I thought what the heck, let's see what the hype is about. Best $7.50 I've ever spent. This game is awesome! This game isn't about sex or killing police and hookers. The media focused on the things you CAN do, but that doesn't mean it's the theme or purpose. This game simply gives you the freedom to do things and if you WANT to kill a bunch of innocents, you can. There are little touches of quality video game making all over this game. For instance, the sheer volume of vehicle types you can use is staggering. The radio in the car isn't a single station, but gives you lots of genres to use. The dialog seldom seems to repeat itself.
I don't believe the game deserves a 10. I have had a few graphical glitches (nothing to major, but quite noticeable). Not being able to save manually anytime is a real pain in the buttocks. The game is a huge resource hog. I have an E6850 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 8800GT and I need to turn down the settings fairly significantly even on 1680x1050 res.
All in all, I'm very impressed and excited to spend more time with this title. Thanks for listening.
