Tecmo Bowl Throwback on XBLA - Page 2

I'm enjoying what little I've played so far. Until I downloaded it, though, I completely forgot about Tecmo not being able to include NFL teams/players. I do like their approach to this situation -- using both the actual locations of the teams and the actual numbers of the players. And since they've allowed us to rename teams and players, I'm sure that it won't be long before someone has created a save file with accurate teams/rosters.

The OXM review was very brief, and most of their problems seemed to just be with the style and speed of play - which to be true to the original I don't think you should penalize it for. One of their minuses though was the thin season mode.

danforth - have you already bought the full version then? How does the season look to you? Can you have multiple saves? Create-a-player? Depth of stats? Weather?

I only had the original and one of the very last versions, so I don't know what features were standard for the version this remake is based on. I think the very last two editions were fantastic though - most of the features of today's games (seasons, trades, injuries, create-a-player, decent stat tracking, etc) with the classic Tecmo gameplay.

anyone else play this? I just picked it up and it was some good fun.

my very first Tecmo Bowl match (I've never played Tecmo Bowl before so yeah, a lot of n00b behavior):

All rosters were updated to opening day 2012 players. This is the Dallas Cowboys versus the Washington Redskins. I just got the game so I didn't know the controls, and I never played Tecmo Bowl before (so I thought it'd be a different button per receiver, not A to cycle to and B to throw). I didn't know how to audible or how to do extra points. I still don't get how to read the defensive plays.

1:33 gameplay start. 4:11 DeMarco Murray is a beast! 5:08 Tony Romo to Miles Austin TD pass! 5:27 not knowing how the kicking game works. 8:13 Romo making it happen under pressure. 9:04 Murray plowing them down for a TD! 9:18 15G Razzle Dazzle achievement for 100 yard game. 10:03 RGIII throws an INT. 10:24 Romo to Dez Bryant for a TD! 11:59 halftime. There are lots of different halftime shows. This just happens to be the most boring (no girls!!!!). 12:14 halftime stats.

13:06 Romo shaking off a defender to hit Dez Bryant for a big one. 13:58 this should've been a TD for Jason Witten!!! 17:51 Joshua Morgan fumbles. 21:06 Evan Royster breaks a big one for a TD. 23:00 end of game stats. 23:22 week 1 standings. 24:14 week 1 team rankings. 24:57 week 1 player rankings.

Maybe someone can give me pointers? I'm going to have to go through the tutorial as there's a lot I haven't figured out (like how to switch players once the play has started, how to audible, how to intercept, etc.).

Set this newer version aside and go buy the original Tecmo Super Bowl and an original NES.

Tecmo Super Bowl on the original NES is the greatest video game ever made.... period. No game has ever had the replay power that TSB does. If you have a group of friends that can get together and play a tournament with all the teams, you will never have a better time gaming. Barry Sanders, Neal Anderson, David Waymer, BJ Toliver, Derrick Thomas, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Mark Duper, Warren Moon, the list goes on. It is the perfect combination of arcade-style and real-life simulation. Games don't take forever, the player's physical condition changes during the game, you can throw 100+ yd. passes, and the Nigerian Nightmare can't be tackled by anyone on the Colts. Where else are you going to catch a pass with Pat Beach or Cap Boso? You can run with Bo Jackson as if he never had his hip mangled by Kevin Walker. The Patriots still have their cool pink uniforms and the Saints apparently thought they had to smear lard on their hands in order for the game to count.

There are tournaments held in different parts of the country throughout the year... it is that cool. smile.gif

well, considering that this has the same game logic as the original SNES Tecmo Super Bowl, the gameplay should be the same. The only difference is the new graphics which you can switch back and forth between it and the old style graphics, a la Halo Anniversary. Admittedly, I didn't look up what button switches graphics. smile.gif

I saw the pitchback to the QB in the video and I noticed it when I was playing the Redskins. What button does that?

I did read that the SNES version of Tecmo Super Bowl did fix some of the bugs and glitches that people took advantage of.

Tecmo Super Bowl III was the best of the SNES bunch, but no where near as cool as good 'ole TSB for NES.

If you ever decide to throw caution into the wind and fire up an actual NES with some TSB... you will realize that having the same logic as the original is just not the same. smile.gif

Did you update the rosters manually?

yes, it was a pain. I used a USB keyboard which helped somewhat. the only issue is you have to bounce back and forth between the keyboard and controller as Southend didn't let you use the keyboard to go to the next player.

Wait, so was there a push by the devs to update all their stats and you just renamed the players, or did you have to update EVERYTHING yourself?? If the former, I might get it.

I grabbed the roster/player info from the internet and updated myself. there are a lot of fan-based projects to update this stuff. But overall it's not something I recommend. Probably took 5-6 hours from beginning to end to do it. And you need to type pretty fast. if you're a hunt and pecker, stay away.

But really, it's more about the gameplay than the up-to-date rosters.
