Will the LG output the checkerboard pattern 3D that DLP sets need?

I would also like to know any other players besides Panasonic support checkerboard?

The Pannys are out of my price range

AFAIK, only the Panasonic 3D BD players and a PC will output Checkerboard 3D

The Pannys are down to below 300 on amazon...however, I'd get the LG BX580...It rocks!...I just bought 2....Great machine...Zero issues...

This unit seems to be way under-rated for all that it can do. Going for a paltry $185 shipped online, plus a free IMAX 3D BD DVD if purchased prior to 12/31/10 makes this a great deal IMHO.

I was reading the following review on it:

http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/home_av...tm?AT=62062620

Aside from having the best implementation of Netflix and enhanced versions of some of the other online apps.

It has some great features as quoted from the review:

DLNA playback (which isn't crippled like it is on the Sony units) and Nero MediaHome 4 Essentials via the player.

An extension of the onboard USB media playback, the DLNA function enables users to remotely stream content stored on their PCs and networked storage, via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The file and media format supported are:

Music: MP3, WMA, WAV
Photo: JPEG, PNG
Videos: Standard-definition (MPEG-1/2/4, DivX) and high-definition (MKV, H.264, DivX HD) clips in DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound

Nero MediaHome 4 Essential software is bundled to enable media server capability on a PC based on the Windows XP and Vista operating systems. The program features stronger format compatibility than Microsoft's Windows Media Player (which also allows file sharing), including DivX HD, MKV and AVCHD in 1080p resolution.

In our hands-on, onscreen visuals were smooth and crisp playing back HD clips through an 802.11n Wi-Fi connection, which required up to 90 seconds of data buffering each. We even managed to test an MKV file with a 5.1-channel DTS soundtrack successfully, though a multichannel Dolby Digital version outputted only stereo sound.

Gracenote will automatically pull CD details. This is a rather clever implementation to harness the full potential of the player's Web access. Instead of showing plain CD track numbers, the BX580 is able to display album cover art, artist names and individual song titles automatically pulled off the Internet. The process takes no longer than a few seconds and is initiated when a music CD is inserted into the disc player.

Furthermore, users can rip CDs directly to an external USB storage such as a thumbdrive or hard drive under its CD-recording function. The soundtracks are encoded in MP3 format using 128kbps, 192kbps, 320kps data compression or in lossless quality with ID3 metadata.

What more could you ask for?

bsevern, thank you for your feedback!

I was very interested in this LG player, but AFAIK it's unable to read ISO images from a NAS (in my case, some original DVD I ripped for my daughter and stored to my Qnap NAS).

Too bad, since I will need to buy a BRD player and a Network Media Player...

Ciao!

Just hooked up my LG BX580 and was very impressed. EXCEPT, it the CinemaNow Netcast feature will not work. Not help from with LG or CinemaNow. LG said to send the BRAND NEW unit in for servicing -- I said, RIGHT! Anyone have any advice? ALL the other Netcast sites work beautifully, only CinemaNow does not. It is unable to "find the server" and keeps asking me to redo the settings -- which does nothing. Thanks everyone!!! Mark G.

Doggone: Do you know if the Zoom feature works on 3D as well as 2D? Can you eliminate the horizontal bars from a wide screen disc and fill a 16:9 screen with the Zoom feature?

Been a few days since I asked. Are there any US owners of this model who can tell me how easy the Netflix interface is to use?
does anyone know what format 3D it outputs?
frame packing, side by side or top and bottom?

I assume frame packing, but would like some verification.

Anyone? Does the zoom feature on the LG BX580 player operate effectively on playing 3D Blu-Ray as well as playing 2D Blu-Ray and DVD's?

It does allow searching, BUT not by name (at least not so far as I can see), but by category. I could swear that somewhere I read that the 580 could in fact search by name, as it had the updated Netflix interface.

Overall I've been very happy with my LG, but I'm still experimenting with DLNS and HD video streaming. I took some BD DVDs and make them into MKVs (which is supported on the LG), but over my wireless connection it wasn't pretty. My next test is over my gigabit ethernet backbone, but it's going to have to wait until I move I might convert a BD file into a AVCHD for giggles and see if it plays any better, but I suspect the culprit is a slow wireless connection. I'll also try moving the MKV file to a USB drive and validate if it's a format issue or a bandwidth issue.

Yes, the zoom feature works very well on both 3D and 2D content. I used it to watch Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 3D the other night to fill the screen. The effect sitting close to the screen was very immersive. I also have a BD390 and the zoom works essentially the same.

Cheers.

Question on the BX580...

What audio output setting allows the
receiver to decode the signal?

Usually on any given BD player it
would be BITSTREAM. However, there
is no BITSTREAM on the audio out settings.

Can anyone recommend the correct
audio outputs?

Thanks

I have the 580 and am running wireless using the included Nero MediaHome 4. I currently have 4 BD movies in the mkv format. Only one will play. It plays extremely well with little to zero hangs and full DTS surround. Im perplexed why the other three wont play at all while they play perfectly on my CPU. They start to play but as soon as an image or sound starts to come up, I get kicked back into the server's folder screen. Has anyone else come across this.

Just got this player and it seems to work well. Did the firmware update over the network as well.
Inception played all the way trough with no issues like others reported on various models.

Too bad that file server does not work for whole playlist but rather having to go trough folders!

I have just purchased a BX580. Its great apart from it plays some of my mp3 files too fast and some too slow. It seems to depend on the sampling frequnecy, 44 Khz is ok, 48 too slow and 32 much too fast.

This is using a DNLA server (Twonkly). These MP3 files play fine on iPhone and 2 other media clients. LG Support just say the BX580 can't support all media files !

So beware. Has anybody else come across this ???

I had mkv with LP sound as well as dts. It wouldn't play. dts only was fine.

I have the same problem.
Some of my movies (.mkv files) don't play
some proposed to change it to a format that works, But some mkv files play well, the others don't play at all

Hi:

I can confirm I've had the same issue. I have a Twonky DLNA media server running over a Linux CentOS 5.8 OS. When I us the BX580 to play some mp3 files, they all play too quickly. I haven't experienced mp3 files playing too slowly. Pretty much all of my content is sampled at 44.1 ksps, and I don't see any correlation with sampling rate.

Here's what I found:
- Not all mp3 files are affected.
- No WMA files are affected.
- mp3 files downloaded from Amazon at very high bitrate are all affected, yet if I transcode to WMA the issue goes (I'm loath to do it because it is a hassle, takes time, and takes the edge of the quality I bought)
- The playback speed is very noticeable, and renders the file unplayable in my opinion.

LG: please get this simple issue onto your bug list, and get it fixed!! It isn't acceptable to say that you can't support ALL audio formats. The common ones will do.
