When I first got the tv I noticed the floating blacks but they were so minor and rare that you wouldnt know they were happening if you didnt know what a "floating black" was, but Harry Potter, that was insane, it was IMPOSSIBLE to pay attention to the movie with the picture shifting so much, all of the scenes with Voldemort threw the TV into a convulsion.

This movie has genuinely scared me into owning this TV since I'll have to use it for another couple years to justify the price.

Does it make sense to you that it would help to know which Harry Potter you were watching, whether it was the SD or HD version, and possibly something about your setup?

He's talking about Deathly Hallows. A title that has been discussed here as the reference disc to show your friends the wonders of Floating Black technology. This bluray is literally unwatchable on my VT-20.

That's a shame. It looked great on an 8G Kuro just a couple of weeks ago.

Glad to hear your Pioneer is doing the job for you. I'll bet their next gen models will be even better.

That's the generation after ours. The generation after that is the one that's thought to be perfect.

All I can say for ours is that it has no detected image retention or burn-in. No one in this house is looking for either one.

I was just listening to the Tech Guy podcast from last weekend. Scott Wilkinson (Home Theater mag, Ultimate AV mag) was filling in for Leo Laporte. He mentioned that he and Tom Norton were reviewing the VT30, as well as the other models from Panasonic this year. They also put a VT25 in the line up, and both thought the VT25 looked the best of the group.

Funny thing is I've never seen an instance of Floating Blacks with 3d content. Even a dark title like Sanctum displayed no FB at all. I think 3D mode must disable this "feature". I love the 3D performance of the VT-20, which is the main reason why I purchased it. Other than it's issues with Deathly Hallows, I am also very happy with it's 2D quality.

Deathly Hollows is the best movie to show/look for floating blacks. You'll see it in any of the dark scenes. It sounds odd to always hear about one movie but it is mentioned everywhere on the web. With along The Dark Knight of course.

Anyone try Bram Stoker's Dracula? I'm almost afraid to. And not because it's scary kids. Apologies to Count Floyd.

Hhm.. Which version are you talking about?
Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' (w/ Gary Oldman) is NOT scary.

Just got a 54vt25 and the 96hz mode is very choppy during pans. I'm coming from a lg 50ps60 which the pans in 24p were very smooth. The overall picture with vt25 is much better, but I loved the smoothness of the ps60. Is there anything that can be done to get it nice and smooth? Thanks

Try using 60hz instead of 96.

+1. Not only does 60 Hz avoid some processing errors that 96Hz introduces, (yielding a better image), it often has the same or even less motion judder. Also try setting your BD player to output 60Hz, this may yield even less judder.
I did output the ps3 to 60hz and have the TV do 3:2 pull down. That looks pretty good. I just didn't know if there was a trick to get the judder free pans. Thanks for the replies.
When I got the TV, it had 66hrs on it. For 7 bills, I just couldn't pass it up

This years Panasonic VT30 has the same issue with 96hz. Using 60hz eliminates the problem.

I just watched this on BD in the dark and it wasn't as bad as you described on my TV. Then again I have well over 3k hrs on it, and actually watched the movie all the way through. Brightness fluctuation is still there but not nearly as bad/irritating as when I first got the TV. Using THX mode brightness set to 58.

Watched Bram Stoker's Dracula last night and was quite impressed overall. Although a very dark movie. I only detected 1 or 2 minor instances of floating blacks. I was also surprised how well the transfer looked given all the negative talk regarding this title. Yes, there were a few instances of black crush, but that is excusable given the darkness of the content. I thought it was a very film like experience. Why this title looks so good on the VT-20 while Deathly Hallows does not is a mystery to me.

I have come across 2 stores that have this 50 inch set open box for about $1000

Would it be a good investment?

I wonder how I would be able to tell the amount of hours it has already at the store

Happy Birthday to my 58VT25. It turned 1 year old this week. It was D-Nice calibrated in September. It still looks as great as it did when Mr. "D" left my house. The colors and detail are still stunning. Still no problems with blacks, buzzing or anything else. The one comment I made last year that I would change now is that I did not think the panel was hot in front. While not really hot, it is very warm. It still is not a complaint but it is a lot warmer than I first reported.

You have to get into the service menu which I doubt they would allow in the store. I'm a new owner of a display model 54vt25 which I bought for about the same price (strangely, the 50" was only $100 cheaper). It was in BB Magnolia and was likely there for a year on display so it's well broken in. Got it home and found that it has 4000 hours on it! No buzzing, deep blacks (hey, if they have not faded yet, I doubt they will!), full one year warranty. I figure if something was going to go wrong with this set, it would have done so already. Heck, the panel is rated for 100,000 hours until half brightness. So, I dont' know about an investment but I would not hesitate to buy it as long as you can return it if there is an issue.

My question to other users is if it might make sense to pick up the extended 4YR Panasonic warranty. This warranty is almost half what I paid for the TV but it it seems a better deal as far as coverage compared to Best Buy's Black Tie warranty since BB only give you a replacement valued up to what you initially pay.

It's not really "floating blacks" it's more of a fluctuation in the brightness.
Yeah I was confused about the whole floating blacks thing to until I started noticing my brightness fluctuating during a movie and I looked into it and I was like OOOOO so that's what they are talking about on AVS lol. I felt retarded.

Well, I rather not look too much into it..
I had seen how horrible some movies look like in a low end model?

My GFs parents got a brand new 65vt25...

when they skype another panasonic tv...

the volume is impossible to hear from the TV speakers.

Very very low. I could barely hear it. 70 year olds, not at all.

Why does the volume only go to 28 ?

The low volume causes them to think that they have to yell at the top of their lungs when chatting.

Do I have to rig their skype through their sound system ?
