Sony RDR-GX360 recording problem with set-top box control

I recently got this unit used, but in otherwise pristine condition, it functions fine except for one serious problem with recording using the IR blaster.

If I have several programs scheduled, it ALWAYS sets the channel of the LAST program listed rather than the one programmed. I can clearly see this on the TV screen during repeated testing. If I make a dummy last program set to 'line 2', which has nothing connected, it simply doesn't change the channel.

I contacted Sony, where we ran several tests similar to the above, including a complete reset of the unit. Their only option was to send it in for service. Therein lies a problem, because I got it used on eBay and according to the original owner, it was probably purchased just over a year ago and the documents aren't available anymore.

I don't yet know what Sony will want to charge for out-of-warranty repair, but this issue seems so odd, how could it be something that 'suddenly' broke? I don't think the original owner was trying to use it this way.

They say there is no firmware to be upgraded in these units, but this sure seems like some kind of software problem.

I searched for issues like this both on this site and generally, nothing shows up. Anybody seen this or have a clue? Ideally I'd love to find a reasonable workaround, can't think of what else to try other than begging Sony to stand by their product, which sure seems like a day-one problem, and I'd hate to pay more for repair than the reasonable price I did pay.

I see a number of folks have read this, but no replies so far, not that a lot of you have this unit, or seen a problem like this. Apparently Sony hasn't. Anyway, following up on this, I re-engaged Sony, and based on the idea that this was probably a day-one problem and despite my iffy record of purchase, they agreed to accept it under warranty. Whew. So I sent it off to Texas, if this gets 'er going for some $10 shipping, I'll be happy.
