What else? I know no one has s2 yet so can't compare beyond specs, and inferences made from smaller s1 vs. s2, but is anyone expecting or even hoping for a significantly better picture (e.g. noticeably better blacks) than 65s1? Even so, enough to justify $400-500 more plus risk that floating blacks will bug you? Am I missing something else?

I really don't think you're going to see a $400-500 improvement over the S1. But that's just my opinion from looking at the specs and all the reviews of the S1. Newer is not always better.

I guess what worries me more than the $$ is a step backward with floating blacks. The extra $$ would add insult to injury. I did try to hunt down the power consumption specs for both units but gave up after my short attention span and Google didn't cooperate. Anyway, I suspect the numbers would show S2 paying for itself in energy over a few years, which would simplify the question to "which set is better for whom" based on factors like AR coat and no floating blacks (s1 advantages) to deeper blacks and weight (seeming s2 advantages).

Quick update for those who might still be thinking S1 -- they are going fast. While I was posting last night, the last sub-$2100 unit w/ free shipping and no tax was gone (talked to the sales guy, I missed last one by a few hours). Most of the vendors are now sold out, some showing it online, others only when you call. I finally sucked it up and bought one from a company that had them in stock (Best Buy P.C.S.) that said "free shipping" online but then required extra insurance payment (turned out that 7-day direct was $199 vs. 14-21 day + $299 insurance, so at least I get it faster too). At least they were up front about it when I talked to them live -- reading reviews of the lower-cost suppliers it appears many have a bait-and-switch of accepting your order online, then calling you to get more $ for insurance and cancelling your order if you don't pay. Too bad I talked myself out of the S2 -- at least I could have bought directly through reputable Amazon. Good luck to all you future S2 owners -- may its inky blackness dazzle you, it's green power savings enrich you and our planet, and its (probably?) floating blacks never bother you. Just please don't gloat if your picture is far superior to my S1 Finally, my analysis paralysis is over!

I recently purchased my 65" S1 from Best Buy online (I called them).

$2199 was the price....Free Shipping. I had to pay tax but no other fees. I also got 3 years - No interest.

Being delivered in one week.

Probably a bad idea but I am now gambling on the S2 (waiting for it's release and reviews with the knowledge that the S1's may be gone by then) because it's 9 lbs lighter.
Up at these weights (120+lbs) 9 lbs means a lot to me and my IKEA tv stand, or wall, lol

I'm a bit confused on the S2 in regards to how it handles 1080p/24. Does it convert it back to 60 frames or does it handle it correctly and without flicker or judder? I'm seen some conflicting reports on this. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks

If you extrapolate from the smaller sized S2 models (which, of course, doesn't necessarily always follow) the power consumption of the P65S2 will be 60-65% of the S1. At an average power consumption of 365 watts for the S1 and using 65% then it would be 238 watts for the S2, or a difference of 127 watts. At 5 hours usage per day that's 635 watts per day or 0.635 kWh per day or 365 x 0.635 = 232 kWh per year. I pay about 13c/kWh all in with all the surcharges, so that would be about $30 savings per year which means it would take a long time to recoup the possible lower cost of the S2 through energy savings. Of course if you have it on a lot more the more you'd save! lol

My set is probably on closer to 8-10hrs a day......between the kids and then myself being a real night owl. So maybe $60 a year worst case. Which means approximately 8 years before I would break even on an S2......which may or may not have floating black issues but I save 9 pounds......no thanks.

Someone said it here, so who knows how much validity it has; however I have not seen any other guesses why the 58 and 65 are being released so much later than the smaller ones.
What was the release schedule for the 2009 versions?

Interesting......Amazon has both the P65S1 & P65S2 in stock and the S1 is priced higher?

The cost on the P65S1 was almost $500 more than the S2, that could be the reason. The P58S1 seems to be the sweet spot. They seem to be selling right around cost. Oh, and it seems if the 58" and 65" are finally in-stock and shipping. My 58" will arrive on Thursday at Best Buy.

The S1 has a better anti-reflective coating than the S2?

Randy compares the S2's AR superior to other models here

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1256579

Maybe kcwdad was confused, or maybe it's all subjective.

There is no comparison to the S1 in that link......only to sets that have NO AR filter (the C2 and U2).

I will be interested to see if they are truly available at Amazon, a company that I have been speaking to just emailed me with a updated product availability date of July 8th, just what I was afraid of.

Don't know but Amazon is usually very good about what's in stock and what isn't.

BB online now showing the 65S2 able to add to cart, up till today it had shown "comming soon"
Still at MRSP though
The S1 doesn't have floating blacks, but does have rising blacks? Is that a correct assessment?

And Amazon shows in stock but no one seems to have one yet (on here anyway).

Not from what I've seen.

There have been no reports of floating blacks on the S1 and very, very few reports of rising blacks.

I can't believe the price Amazon is selling the 65S2 for! At this rate it could be $1500 by xmas.

D-Nice didn't mention the S2 getting the "corrected" voltage fix, and we don't know whether the 58/65 models start out at a lower black level like last year. Could be a set to watch out for though if you don't want 3D but want a huge tv.

I bought one. Free scheduled delivery, cool. Should be here Wednesday 23, Hope it's that fast, my Sony rear projection is out of whack, no matter how much I adjust the lamps inside.

Well I am not that surprised as the P65S1 discounted price was less than this, yet it had a MSRP of $400 more. I remember that in about July of last year Amazon was selling the P65S1 INCLUDING a Panasonic Blu-Ray player for about the same price they are selling just the P65S2 now. There's likely movement for further price declines given the lower list price of the P65S2. Btw, for anyone using Bing cashback to buy one, that program is closing July 30th. Also, if you buy the P65S2 from Amazon right now you get an instant discount if you buy a Panasonic Blu-Ray player at the same time.

LOL, I have a 58S1 with the rising blacks. All Panny Plasmas have it. (2009-2010 (Longer on the 2010 models))

I did not see an instant discount it seems to be the same 129 price if I order blu-ray by itself. Am I missing something?

Yes you are.

Did you proceed to checkout? You'll see another discount added there (and you can still opt out of the order at that point)

Actually, Sears has a sale on the P65S2 on right now. In addition to the quoted sale price it turns out there is even another 10% off if you buy it online and then if you use Bing shopping you get even another 8% off the pre-tax price. You also get a 1% Sears shopyourwayrewards credit on your account. Then buy it with an Amex card and you get a 2 year warranty instead of one. Have it shipped to the store and you save shipping too.

This beats Amazon by a mile (even if you add the Blu-Ray player).
