Official Samsung BD-C5500 master owner's thread - Page 36

I'd also like to know what the latest 1021.4 does. It's still available for me from the network update.

It doesn't show up on Samsung's support page though.

Doing a search online indicates that it may add BBC iPlayer as an app option for UK users.
Looking on Samsung UK they have 1021.4 list but just that "improves specific disc's playback"
I'll wait for the automatic update. I checked last night and my 1021.1 was reported as current.

That said there are some new apps available including Alphaline, Sears and K-Mart's emergence into the video streaming fracas. Anyone try it yet?

dowloading the update now no idea what it does just hoping it fixes my dang screensaver bug

WTF is going on?

I noticed the Facebook app gone due to the latest update. I didn't use the app, so dont care too much, but I think it is pretty lame of Samsung to pull the app without notice.

Also is it possible to move an app such as YouTube into the recommended apps list on the first screen? I added it as a favorite which made no difference. Sucks to have to do multiple clicks to reach this.

I'm mad as hell they did that. I have two of these players. I shut off the update notification on the family room player. The facebook still works their, but the one in my bedroom is gone. I hope it's just a software glitch and we get it back.

Everyone asks that, and everyone tries that.

But unfortunately the answer is no, Samsung decides what goes into Recommended Apps. Seems pretty dumb.

As for Facebook, Samsung has temporarily withdrawn apps before when they discovered some kind of problem with them, but they posted some kind of notice (apology, back soon...). No idea what's behind this one. I'm getting the update prompt, but I'll hold off for a while at least. You never know what's in a firmware update these days - could be apps withdrawn, Samsung product marketing forced into your apps list (the last update), CinAvia copy protection added (no, there's no evidence of that, but they wouldn't mention it...), etc.

I see that there are a couple more new apps available in Canada:

DailyMotion (www.dailymotion.com) - An online video service like Youtube and Vimeo (but their app actually works, unlike Vimeo)

ChannelLive - online video and TV from India

How to Tie - a video tutorial on how to tie a necktie (no, not kidding)

facebook got deleted off of mine after the upgrade aswell. did not help out with my screensaver issue either only way to wake it up is with the buttons on front. one thing i did notice, i have everthing installed in a closet and use a ir repeater the receiver wall plate lights up solid as soon as the screen saver kicks on and as soon as i push play on the front the light goes out so for some reason when the sceen saver kicks in it's flooding my room with ir makes no sense

Just joined. I got a notice on power-on about new firmware, but none is listed on the site for the BD-C5500*. So I'm looking around to see what other owners are saying.

I'm pretty wary of new firmware, here's why. Last year, after a firmware update, the player started making the audio input on my Yahama amp flicker crazily until the player made a sound (I hate the power-on sound). Then, late last year, no more playing DVDs. S'okay, I have a great Yamaha DVD player.

Then with the February firmware update (which I downloaded and stuck in the player with a day or two of release), the player loaded the firmware from the USB key (I never do it over wireless or Ethernet), checked it, applied it, turned off, and ... that was all she wrote. Power-on showed "LOADING..." and halted. I never got audio, video, or anything more than a little heat out of the player.

Fortunately, I bought it @ Costco, a store that features The Return Policy Of the Gods, they found my purchase record (9/2009), gave me a refund on a cash card, and I bought a new one, the C5500C. Very easy, only took a few minutes, but ... I will NOT apply new firmware until I've heard more than a few other owners validate that it doesn't brick the player like it did mine.

I just got this player last night, hooked it up to my 50" LG Plasma HD TV via HDMI cables (like I thought I should) but all I got was a black screen with the floating words "Invalid Format".

I connected the player to my TV with the A/V cables provided (yellow/red/white) and the Setup Menu appeared. So I ran through the start-up setup routine, then, because I had my player already hardwired into my router, I downloaded the latest software updates. After that I tried plugging in the HDMI cable again but still nothing but a BSOD with "Invalid Format".

The Troubleshooting section in the manual for "No HDMI output" is next to useless.

"Check the connection between the TV and the HDMI jack of the player"
"Check if your TV supports 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p HDMI input resolution"

The HDMI cable is plugged in and it works just fine. I know this for a fact because I plugged the exact same cable into my HD Satellite receiver and the picture popped up on my TV. There's nothing wrong with the cable, and I don't need to change any input settings on my TV.

Despite what Samsung seem to think I can't help but feel that something is up with my player and it's not outputting an HD signal. Unfortunately I can't find anything in the manual which addresses this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this problem before in getting their BD-C5500 hooked up via HDMI? Or am I the only one?

Thank you,
John.

Is your plasma a 1080p? If not, you need to go into the blu ray's set up menu and choose a different resolution. It's set at 1080p as the default.

I believe it is. It's only a couple of years old and we specifically shopped for 1080p versus 720p TVs. I'll have to check that tonight...maybe we got gypped.

Guys, there is a reason that I'm reading far and wide before downloading and applying ANY new firmware from Samsung. Read my post above. I don't think I encountered any fixes for my last player, but I did see additional breaks, ultimately a bricked player. (And stories on forums here and there of Samsung offering $100 repairs, then discounting to $50 repair out of the goodness of their corporate heart, after firmware bricked a player! )

If you use the Facebook app on your Blu-Ray player (I'm still trying to fathom that ), don't apply this firmware.

This will be the last Samsung product I would probably purchase. The 2 cell phones I have suck even with the froyo update. The Samy product I still enjoy is my TV.
For me this has been a reliable BD player and Netflix streaming device, which I primarily purchased it for. I was excited about some of its other potential like DLNA but that hasn't worked out very well for my situation. It's with the other TV now and fulfilling its basic functions. Still think it was a pretty good deal.

i have ben offered the update but have NOT taken it. I still have the Facebook APP but i notice my newsfeed is no longer refreshing. When i use the computer or my iPhone APP the newsfeed is updated with several new posts. I think something broke and Facebook is about to stop supporting this device or a new APP is coming.

Turns out I have an Insignia, not an LG, specifically an Insignia NS-PDP50, and apparently it's only 720p. Bummer.

So in the Setup Menu for the Blu-Ray it was set to output at 1080i, not 1080p, in fact 1080p was not even an option. However, 720p was an option so I set the Blu-Ray to 720p, then went to HDMI #2 on my TV and lo! I had a picture via the HDMI cable.

So now I have proper HD. Hooray! But apparently I also only have 720p. Boo! Actually that's not that big of a deal. I'm old, I probably can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p anyway
post #1068 of 1561
Your "720p" plasma TV is actually 1366x768, so if you can get the player to work at its 1080i setting on that input, the picture will be a bit sharper.

Im trying to wonder why now all of a sudden my player doesn't stay connected via the pc share manager. I was watching a movie last night and it kept saying Media Disconnected and my computer was not shut down or disconnected from the net. My computer is wired in so is the samsung blu ray player. It did prompt me for an upgrade like two or three days ago and I did it. I've already put the blu ray player in DMZ and gave it a static ip address and still its doing this.

Also whats the Netflix interface like - do you have to use the web to maintain the Instant queue or can you browse instant content directly from the BD player?

[EDIT] looks like you manage queue on web then access from BD player.

I realize this is an older post but I just bought the BD-C5500 and you can now browse & search the entire Netflix library using the Blu-Ray player itself; you're no longer restricted to watching only the movies in your Netflix queue.

Does anyone know if I can push video (WMC) from my PC to BOTH HDMI and compsite video out from the BD-C5500? I am trying to watch WMC and other video from my PC to my HDMI tv and other non-HDMI tvs in my house. Thank you.

I don't know about HDMI, but it will output SD Composite and HD Component (1080i/720p) simultaneously.
Yes, I use HDMI and Composite out from one of my BD-C5500's simultaneously.

Ok, this might be the fix if you haven't tried it yet. I was on a chat with Samsung about the Facebook App gone from the last update. He told me with the player on, hold down the stop button on the player(not remote) for 5 seconds. This will put your player back into factory default. The only downside is you have to re-do all your login info for Netflix,Vudu,Cinema Now, etc.. The FaceBoook App never came back but Vimeo works fine now.

They had me does this for an unrelated issue. They had me does this because my player would freeze while watching Blu Ray discs. Downside is that yes you have to download everything all over again. I think it solved my disc from freezing.
This firmware update doesn't completely fix the netflix audio issue. Before the update if you lose audio on Netflix app after watching a disc until you load another app like the YouTube App. After the firmware update all you have to do is eject the disc and shut off the BD player.

Still, if you're watching a Blu Ray Disc and press Menu to go to the player's home page then go to Netflix it will not play audio. This is disconcerting as a Samsung rep told me Samsung knew about this issue and the next firmware update was going to fix it. Oh well I guess its better.
Never had a problem with Netflix.
That didn't last too long. The Vimeo App is no longer working.

really? I've worked with 3 different BD C5500s (one I exchanged, and the current one, and my parents have one) and all of them had the same issue. If your audio is set to Bitstream(audiophile) and you play a disc the netflix audio is lost. I know people have mentioned having this issue in this thread in the past.

With the old firmware you had to play something else like a video on YouTube then that would fix it. Now all you have to do is shut the player off, which is less annoying. Both mine and my parent's player act consistently is this way.
I always have a USB memory stick plugged in with some video files which are quick to get to and solve the problem too.
