Fix or Scrap - Old Adcom Amplifier

Thread Starter
I have an Adcom GFA-II amplifier. The sound is scratchy so I assume I need new caps.

Currently I have an NAD T741 Receiver driving a 5.1 setups. I don't have lots to spend so I was thinking I would fix the amplifier and use it to drive the fronts (B&W DM600's) while using the NAD for the Center and Surrounds.

I am currently using the NAD for all channels and it is OK. But I would benefit from more power, especially for 2 channel music listening.

Is it worth fixing this old amp? Has basic amplifier technology chnaged that much?

a new ADCOM GFA-5400 is currently $500 and repairs to your much older unit will probably run 1/2 of that, if ADCOM or a local tech will even attempt to do the repairs.

And an Emotiva EPA-3 to power all of your "front 3" is $600

Tough choice

I'd take it to my local handy dandy electronics repair shop and get an estimate.

I have had some amps repaird cheap. Others not so cheap. Even whem major repairs were needed. I used to do all this type of repairs myself, but I am getting older and always have to many other prority projects going on to devote any time to it.

If you decide to scrap it, I'll pay the shipping to my house.

These may be fairly expensive.

There are diy forums (audio karma, etc) that cover certain aspects of recapping, etc older amplifier sections. You would need a service manual.
Electrolytic capacitors are known to deteriorate slowly.
