Same appearance of an S card, but has can decrypt M
ultiple streams instead of just a S
ingle. The device that the card is plugged into obviously needs to support multiple tuners in order to fully utilize an M-card, and plugging in a S card into a device that can use an M card I believe will essentially cripple it to just a single stream (if there aren't other issues)
Also its my understanding the the ati card was mainly an oem product. And that is why it is so hard to get.
Prior to last year CableCard tuners had to be installed in PCs that met certain restrictions. Each PC had to get certified and had a bios that allowed the DCT to work. So limited number of compatible machines from an even more limited number of manufacturers means a pretty limited supply chain. I don't believe the DCT were ever actually limited to only OEMs, but in effect it was.
The restriction was lifted last year for existing and new hardware. I believe it was about when Windows 7 came along with PlayReady but don't quote me on that.
So does that mean that there is no current cable card on the market?
ATI's cards although they are discontinued can be found new and used. Ceton's 4-tuner cards are on pre-order but are scheduled to be released at the end of May. HDHR's cable card model availability hasn't been officially released that I've seen.
