Yes - I agree - go see a demo for yourself. But most importantly - don't go in with any preconcieved notions. Go in with an open mind. Then be a true observer - look at EVERYTHING. Bring a note pad and pen and make notes as you make your observations. Look for the best and look for the worst.

Sorry you had a bad experience with the 3d demo Jmouse. It may have been set up improperly or like many others it just doesn't work for you. All good. Thank you for your insight. By the way I love my RPTV too.

Cheers

Lee Stewart: Did you buy one of these 3D displays already?

If so... congratulations on going boldly where my wallet currently can't go.. lol.

Waiting for the Panasonic 58" and 65". Hoping I don't have to sell my son Alex to raise the cash for the 65" (the one I really want).

Went to Best Buy last night....

it was interesting at least.

The Samsung display was not working much good at all. They did not know whay, except to say that they claimed glasses failure ecen thoughboth sets were not working right. One was working a little better than the other, but niether working well at all. I surmize to those that though the samsung system looked really horrible that something was indeed wrong.

I played with the setup menus on the Panny a fair amount.

The setting for the 3D types available on it were....

Full HD
Checkerboard
Side by side

Bummer they could not dig up the owners manual on it fo rme.

It looks like I may go HTPC on this though. I hate still being so undecided even after so much research.

i saw 2 3D setups at the BB in orland park il. panny plasma, and sammy led (i believe thats what they were, iirc )

AWESOME is what i saw !

some of the footage was ok. but some was just awesome. i picture was plenty bright and clear. and i saw no flickering. the polar bear jumping in the pool was just awesome realism.... the paddle ball looked like it was going to doink me in the face. the drag racing was pretty good also.

the glass's were pretty nice.

John,
Are you referring to 3D options that the Panny TV could receive or to 3D output options that the Panny 3D BR player could output?
With the Samsung is their any possibility that the path from the IR emitter in the lower left hand corner ot the TV's bezel was not always a clear line of site to the IE receiver in the Samsung glases?
Since they claimed that the problem was in the glases did they have ypu cover each eye separatly to see if the shutter for one of the eyes was not closing fully?

Another trouble shooting thought. Since there were two demo TVs going did they try turning one off? It seems someone reported a problem with multiple emitting glasses creating screen viewing issues when they were pointed at each other.

Hey Fab, I was at the Orland Park BB yesterday evening with my wife. I looked at the Panasonic demo and the Samsung and dug them both also. The glasses they had for the Samsung demo are not the same ones I've seen them promote in their 3D advertising though. The glasses that have no frame around the bottom of each eye are the ones you see in advertising. The one for the demo had a frame around the bottom for each eye piece. I started to ask about it but the guy who was talking to me didn't even know that there was a bundle (give away) associated with purchasing a TV and 3D BD player so I left it alone. After he checked with his manager they said I was right.

Some folks who took in the demo (including my wife) didn't even know they glasses had to be turned on and even with the glasses powered off I heard one guy said it looked great. That shows you that someone should try to always try to be around to clear up how 3D works. Two teenagers who saw the demo were hyped up big time for it. So I've seen demos from Sony, Samsung and Panasonic. I didn't notice anything offsetting about either but I'm going with a Samsung (PN63C8000 PDP).

The "Buddy Holly" glasses are the rechargable model. The other is the battery model

I saw the BB Samsung 3d demo here in Beaverton, Oregon yesterday.
It was a Samsung 46" lcd set with their new 3D player and some model of Samsung reciever.
The picture was incredible. So much so that I don't recommend you see it because you will want it!
I went home to my 50" plasma and was disapointed in it for the first time.
What did not impress me was the audio.
I guess if you have a 3D player with 2 hdmi outputs you could forgo the new audio reciever and run 1 hdmi input to you current reciever am I correct?
That way you could just purchase a new player and set.
By the way I was sitting about 8 feet back.
All I can say is WoW! and I wont be buying anymore regular bluray releases!

Yes - that feature is available on Panasonic 3D BD players.

i looked at the sammy display after the panny. i said "hey, this doesn't look nearly as good as the panny". a guy said " hey, you gotta turn on the glass's".

i saw other people going to get their friends, saying " HEY, you GOTTA check this out", with a BIG smile on their face.

i see 3D becoming somewhat main stream in the next few years.

I saw both the 55" Samsung and 50" Panasonic today at BB.

The Panasonic certainly looked great. The flicker from background fluorescent lights was a bit annoying, and I also sometimes thought the display itself had some (very slight) flicker in brighter scenes, but maybe that was a side effect of the surroundings. I was trying to block out background lighting with my hand.

The Samsung glasses didn't have the flicker issue with either background lights or the display itself. It looked great as well, though maybe lacking the super-deep blacks.

Is there a difference in the switching rate/frame rate of the different glasses/displays?

I did not see ghosting with either display with the material presented.

The Panasonic is using 60Hz per eye, 120Hz total for 3D while the Samsung is using 120Hz per eye, 240Hz total. The respective glasses sync to the display's refresh/frame rate.

For those of you seeing both the Samsungs and the Panasonic, is there a clear winner in your mind? I thought I had heard that the plasma (Panasonic) had the clear cut advantage and should look superior, but nobody seems to be saying that the Panny blew away the Samsung....

I was at Best Buy on Friday night, but they said they weren't going to have anything on display till Sunday.
Even though I haven't seen the Panasonic PDP in action, I would wager on the Panny being better. I feel as far as flat panel displays go, plasma is a better technology and produces a better picture. Thats just my opinion. While I own two Samsung DLPs but I prefer the Panasonic brand. If Panasonic made DLP I would buy those.

Cheers

one thing is for sure. it will be very interesting to see how all this pans out.

Why would that make a difference? Isn't it the emitter that instructs the glasses when to "switch" eyes?

The shutter glasses that I now use for SD 3D can work with multiple refresh rates. They merely sync with whatever rate the display is running at and are totally controlled by the emitter.

I suspect that there is some other reason the Samsung and Panasonic glasses are not interchangeable.

Edit: I misunderstood the original question. I thought the poster was asking why the Sammy/Panny glasses weren't interchangeable, and I thought you were responding that the reason was because of the different refresh rates of the sets. I am still wondering, however, why they are not interchangeable. Also, I wonder if there will compatibility issues even within Samsung's own line? Once their plasma sets hit the market, there will be:
a.) Older Samsung plasma "checkerboard" 3D sets
b.) Newer full 1080p Samsung LCD/LED 3D sets
c.) Newer full 1080p Samsung plasma 3D sets
I wonder if their own glasses will work on all three types?

Just came back from my BB and checked out the Panny 50" 3D tv.. Picture was outstanding, very sharp, no blurring.. A definite Wow picture.. Salesman said the glasses were about $150 each... Then I listened to some ML Vantage speakers while relaxing in some theater seats.. Went back to see the 3D picture again then left..Noticed that the 2 big stores 6th ave. Electronics and BB have the same bundle on sale..Samsung tv & BD player

I didn't think there was a clear winner. I was a little concerned about the slight flicker I perceived from the Panasonic, probably due to the 60 Hz per eye vs. 120 for the Samsung. (Plus a fraction of that time has both eyes "off" with the Panasonic). Think of your old CRT monitor running at 60Hz refresh rate and you get the idea (though I'm not sure it is that bad). The Samsung seemed a bit "smoother" with no flicker at all. But I liked the uniform results from wide viewing angles, deep blacks, and the reports of less crosstalk/ghosting in the Panasonic (though I didn't see any with either display).

I didn't see a difference either. I thought the Samsung demo was too short and the Monsters vs.Aliens demo used the wrong scenes to showcase 3D. Panasonic's demos had more to choose from but only one movie (Astro Boy). I'd like to see the demo that Disney has mentioned and is to be a given away to 3D customers.
I was able to see the Samsung 55 incher today at Best Buy. They didn't have the 46 incher on display, nor did they have the Panasonic on display. Monsters vs. Aliens was the demo material, and unfortunately, I can't really give much of an opinion on it, because the viewing conditions were really crappy. The display was facing a huge wall of plasmas and lcds, and all of these displays were reflecting into the 55" Samsung. Also, the lighting in the area was just too bright. Too many light sources all over the place made it hard to get a clear cut feeling of how good/bad it was.

Still, I sat down and watched about 20 minutes of the movie. Some of the 3D scenes were really, really cool. Other times, it was like you had to really look for the 3D, and it was almost a struggle where you would say to yourself... "Does this part really look very 3D?... not really". But, I really felt that if I could see this display, in a room that didn't have so many lights interfering with the screen, I might have come away feeling dramatically different. I also think that a 2:35:1 aspect ratio movie is probably not the ideal viewing material even on a 55 incher. A movie that completely fills the screen (Ice Age 2 maybe?) would probably be a bit more impressive at first glance.

I was hoping there might be another demo disk that would show off sports or other stuff in 3D, but all they had was M.V.A.

I'm going to try to find another place the might have the Samsung 55 (or 46) setup in a room that isn't so bright, with so many other displays reflecting onto the screen. I definitely want to see the Panasonic too.
Yeah, the Panasonic demo's seem to get much better treatment than the Samsung demo's at BB's aropund Denver anyways.
Evidently Samsung has not made sure that the Best Buy demos are set up right. My guess from what I'm reading here is that some people are seeing 2D to 3D conversions even when the demo disk is Monsters Vs Aliens. It might look close enough to real 3D to the BB employees. If you see a demo that looks questionable, ask the BB employee if you can look at the menus on the TV and the Blu-ray player to make sure it's setup correctly.

I was thinking the same thing.
I know a guy who works at BB. He said initially it was setup wrong. Something about starting up the blue ray player in 3D. Otherwise it was reading the 2D track, and the TV was applying the faux 3D conversion to the 2D material.
I asked the Manager of a Best Buy if I could see Monsters vs Aliens in the Panasonic. He put in a 2D copy and it wasn't until I saw the menus that I realized he had the wrong disc. He didn't know the difference. He did go get the 3D copy and I was able to watch quite a bit of it. I liked it much better on the Panasonic, but I'm still not sure about the motion handling. I'm taking a friend tomorrow and I'll see if I can tweak it a bit. I understand there's supposed to be an anti-blur setting and a 96hz mode. I want to try both of those and see what effect they have. The 96hz mode should be able simply to repeat the left/right frames twice each, so motion should be smooth (at least as smooth as 24fps can be). I've read, though, that the mode may introduce flicker. Tomorrow I find out.
