965BE , Ubuntu 9.10 64bit - CPU performance problem

Thread Starter
I've HTPC running 965BE with Gigabyte UD2H micoATX am3 board, with 4G DDR3. Everything works fine with the ATI Catalyst drivers with ONLY one gripe.

Whenever I play some flash/youtube videos using Firefox OR play some streaming video using VLC player, there is a heavy CPU usage. The fan starts revving @ high speed that is very very audible. All other times (like download, mp3 playback or gimp) the CPU usage is pretty ok. (Almost 60% idle).

Considering flash performance in Linux is sub-par, what are the tweaks / tuning I can do? (I did use ondemand script thats being used online @ many places).

Feel free to ask me qns, if you need some more hardware/logs info.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Other than verifying that you're using the latest Flash driver (10,0,45,2), I doubt there's much you can do.

If the cpu fan noise is the issue, replace the stock cooler with one that supports a larger fan. I use TR2-R1's on all mine. If your MB won't control standard 3 pin fans, replace the fan with a PWM fan. I don't recall the fan speed ever going over about 800rpm using fan control on the stock fan. It's max speed is about 1500rpm.
