Hmmm. Now I'm swinging back to the 807. I must be bipolar.

Either way the 608 will be the absolute best receiver in this price range for this year. Hands down.

Did you read someone's experience with the 807

I noticed this too. Seems a bit strange at first that the 608 can draw more current yet has less weight and size.

I think the difference is the 707 can do 4ohm speakers so it needs the extra weight and surface area to dissipate the heat better.

AmpBlast and DAveHCY: one alternate thought is that it is possible that they are using a different type of power supply, maybe more efficient, lighter in weight, etc.

Over time, various companies have come up with alternate (or oddball types of power supplies and technologies, witness Carver et al.

Unfortunately, over time, they have seemingly all been proven to be less effective than the time-tested traditional power supplies, that's why the standard industry "bests" have continued to use the much more traditional power supplies, i.e. Mark Levenson, Bryston, Krell, etc. To wit, none of these "top power amplifier" brands use any lighter weight power supply designs.

Here is the scenario.

1.Dish HD Receiver HDMI
2.Sony Blu-Ray HDMI
3.Sharp Aquos 52" LCD

If I want to just listen to the tv via the tv speakers when I want (News at night) and then on onkyo 608 on a kick but movie what is the best way to hook everything up. If I hook everything via HDMI to the tv and then instead of an optical or digital cable from tv to 608 can I hook an HDMI cable from tv to 608 to pass sound. Comments welcome. Another note. I do not want to turn the stereo on to watch tv unless I want to.

The 608 supports passthrough so it will (i assume this is right) send the hdmi signal from the cable box to the TV, no need to send anything from the TV back. Might want to check the manual on that though.

If passthrough works without the stereo being on then great that would be the magical answer on nothing going back to the receiver from the tv.

I normally only hit the level of excitement i have for this to get released when a new video game system is hitting the market, but i find myself constantly scouring the web looking for anything related to release date on the 608!

Time seems to be at a standstill as I wait for the 608 to be available and reviewed by a reputable source.

QQ -- What's the history of pre-order prices? Amazon currently has the 608 for pre-order at $499. Is this good?

Thats how they are advertising the feature, so it better work that way.

That's miserable. Half the incentive of turning off the receiver is to save power. For me in southern CA at least, where electric costs is 5-7x more expensive than where I moved from on the east coast.

Onkyo, don't make me call my friend Ricky Bobby and force us to pray to little baby jesus in order to speed this release date up .. For the love of god, get these things in the mail. No kidding, my new theatre has gone over 1 month with no receive now!!!! r. It's like a mild torture every single time I walk thru the theatre to do my laundry in the basement. My 2 polk 70's, 4 50's, pw505, and cs2 is down right mocking me.

I have the 608 on pre order. Im still wiring my house and shopping for speakers right now. Thats the only reason im not pulling my hair out in anticipation.

hell, my speakers are so new I don't even know if they work!!! LOL.... Hahahaha..

My speakers arrive here on Monday. I will be freaking out Monday about 6pm AZ time!

I recently ordered one and got an email from the reseller with a possible delivery date of 4th May 2010!

Having spoken to many reseller's, they are all likely to get their first batch shipments on the last week of April.

May 4th seems possible to me.

I know we're all excited about the Onkyo 608, but what about the new Pioneer VSX-1020? For only $50 more, it has a lot of goodness to offer, including easy firmware updates through an ethernet connection. Thoughts?

To each their own preference.

It may appear only appear $50 more than MSRP but it is way more than $50 over the 608's street price.

Hi All - I'm curious to hear people's takes on my planned set-up:

Onkyo TX-SR608 (on pre-order for the last month - $499 at Amazon)
Panasonic TC-P50G25 Plasma
Comcast DVR with HDMI out
Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-Ray
Kodak HD Theatre (for MP3s and video from the PC)
Nintendo Wii
Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 speaker set-up

I'm anticipating running the Blu-Ray DVD, Kodak and Comcast box to the receiver with HDMI, and the Wii to the received using composite. I should be able to use the pass-through feature to run just a single HDMI to the TV (I hope) - right?

Also - is it better to use optical audio or HDMI for audio? I have the option for either with the Comcast box and Blu-Ray.

We're upgrading from an older Marantz SR5200 receiver, which works fine, but no HDMI.

Still waiting on a release date for the received
