The "Official" Onkyo TX-SR608 Thread (No Price Talk) - Page 101

I still think mine sounds awsome, I even got my 17 year kid to hear the difference. I do hear the clicking sometimes but it's pretty low in volume. And my fan has gotten pretty loud twice now. Just tapped on the top above it to stop it from making the noise. We where watching V for Vendetta and I was switching back and forth between Dolby Digital and Hd Dolby or whatever and she said, wow! and I said, I know!!!

Would the 808 be a better, or a worse choice than the 608...given that I have read that the 808's upconversion of 480 sources is limited to 720? My Blu-Ray player does a fine job of upconverting SD DVDs, but I have a sizeable collection of SD DVDs resting in a Sony DVP-CX985 (400 disk) machine that is limited to 480P, and am too lazy to pull a DVD out of the Sony and move it to the Blu-Ray (Pan DMP-BD55) every time I want to watch a DVD...Which machine would give the better PQ from a 480P source? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks much! Jack

Not true. Where did you hear this?
My apologies. I had apparently mis-read a FAQ on Onkyo's website that related to 1080i via component: "When I connect my cable/satellite box via component through the receiver and use HDMI from the receiver to my TV it displays 720p when the broadcast is 1080i. Why is that happening?
This is a limitation of the Faroudja DCDi chip used in the Onkyo receivers. Incoming 1080i signals via component connection can only be transmitted via HDMI in 720p. Incoming 1080i signals via an HDMI connection will be transmitted in 1080i...."

So, component 480p does upconvert to 1080? Does the 808 have any disadvantages compared to the 608, aside from size, weight and $ cost? Thanks again.

Still loving this receiver, now that I have a family I'm not using more that 50% of its power. With all full HD & HDMI inputs I have no problems with picture. I surely wouldn't use the ethernet function of the upper models. Great receiver so far.
I have a quick question. If I have all HDMI inputs, is there any benefit to turning off the video processing done by the AVR? I like the OSD but wouldn't mind getting rid of it if I would see improvements in PQ somehow.

Hi brockwilt, the last 6 pages has post about turning Off video processing. See my post 2 page back, #2950 and see ps24eva post on page 95, #2847.

Just for FYI there is a search box on top right next to page nuimber that you can enter a word to search this thread.

Hopefully, someone can guide me through setting up THX Select 2 Cinema. I have six speakers, with the back single speaker connected to the left back speaker connectors. I have been through all the 608 menus and for the life of me cannot find the THX Select 2 Cinema setting. I would like to have it convert 5.1 to 6.1. I must have something toggled wrong, which may disable this THX Select 2 setting and therefore can't find it anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction for this?

Thanks!!

Dear moderator:

If this has been discussed elsewhere, please point me in the right direction.

I just bought an ONKYO TX-SR608. I am using it was a Panasonic blu-ray player and an Epson 8100 1080p projector. Plugged HDMI cable from blu-ray player into Onky0 HDMI BD/DVD input, and used HDMI out to send signal to Epson. I get a picture but no sound. I cannot find anything in the manual that seems to address this problem (or that I can understand).

The speakers are hooked up properly because I get sound when I unhook the HDMIs and use RCA cables for the sound.

I am only using two speakers at the moment, and they are connected to Front L and R inputs.

Anyone experience the same problem? How can I fix?

Thanks!

JChin

Thank you for directing me to the right place to disable my video processing on my onkyo 608. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to repeat an answer to a question that has been answered numerous times.

I was shopping with my wife who is 7 months pregnant all day and didn't have time to scroll through thousands of posts and hundreds of pages

To drhankz who was a smart @$$ to me maybe you should try to be more like JChin and be helpful instead of being rude

Once again thank you JChin your awesome

As I said I am not expecting dramatic improvement - All I want to know is should the 480i picture look different/slightly better when directly connected to via Onkyo 608 to my Samsung LED TV using upconversion vs going to Samsung directly or not? What I am seeing is the same. So I am wondering if that is the normal behavior or is something wrong with my receiver or my setup???

As per post 3013, I am having no luck setting the receiver up for THX Select 2 Cinema. I spent about an hour on the phone today with Onkyo Support. They wanted to confirm that the DVD player (Sony BDP-S570) was streaming bitstream (yes) and connected via HDMI (yes), that zone 2 on the receiver was off (yes) and that I had a Dolby True HD signal in and out (yes), it was indicated on the receiver. He then had me cycle through the Movie and THX listening modes and NO THX Select 2 for anything was available. He left me on hold for a bit and then told me it was not showing up because the actual Blue Ray (Star Trek 2009) was not encoded with THX Select 2 Cinema...HUH? Can anyone help me out on this? Do I have something toggled wrong in set-up that prevents THX Select 2 Cinema showing up as an option?

Help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

These are the correct settings for the onkyo 608, if you left most other settings at default. For example, it should be on "Through" mode by DEFAULT.

setup -> 1. Source Setup -> Picture Adjust

Game Mode Off
Wide Mode Auto
Picture Mode Custom
Film Mode Video
Noise Reduction Off

Then use the VCR & Return OSD disable. On the unit itself, press VCR first, then Return (second after or so), you will see something that looks like:
Vprocessor: USE

While STILL holding VCR &return, use the D-pad to change to "Skip"

Hi Oldsalt, have you try turning "Off' video processing?

I was curious if anyone is seeing the same problem as I am getting video out of the UP-A1 dock to your TV. I've tried playing official itunes videos (tv shows, music videos) and podcasts of several resolutions out of my iPhone 4. But the receiver always displays "ResolutionError" on it's little screen and my TV (a Samsung UN55C8000) reports that the selected mode is not supported. Now, both of these guys (the UN55C8000 and the Onkyo TX-SR608) purport to have some ability to upscale videos to the necessary 1080p, so I don't understand why neither of them would try to scale any video to the required resolution.

BTW, I have turned off video processing, but I've experimented with both settings and all the input modes (game mode, picture mode, etc).
JChin, thanks for the reply. I believe I do have Video Processing shut off. I have it set for "Through". But I'll double check. There just does not seem to be any THX Select 2 showing anywhere.

I have the Onkyo 180 which would not do the THX Select 2 mode and it was hooked up to only one back rear speaker. I "told" it I had 2 rear speakers in the setup and the THX Select2 mode was activated. Maybe this is the case with your 608. Worth a try.

Good luck,

Henry

Henry, I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

Henry...RIGHT ON!
I selected two back speakers and THX Select 2 Cinema appeared. I guess I will have to fish another wire through the wall to maximize this. Thanks for the help, this was driving me crazy!!

That makes sense 7.1, good info.

Hi Dave, sound like a HDCP (handshake) issue since the projector doesn't have audio. Have you try the other HDMI Input ports? Do you have another source to test out BD/DVD HDMI port? Also double check "HDMI Control" and "HDMI Audio Out" are turned Off.

There are times when I'll be playing xbox through hdmi yet want to listen to say my pc's audio. Is there a way to play one audio source but run the video source of another?

It is very interesting that the Onkyo support rep. you spoke with did not immediately notice this.

I was perplexed as you were when I found the correct speaker setup to activate the THX Select 2 mode.
