The "Official" Onkyo TX-SR608 Thread (No Price Talk) - Page 109

Hi all,

I picked up an Onkyo 608 a few weeks ago and I've been pretty happy with it. However, with my Xbox 360 I get random audio dropouts that last 1-2 seconds. These dropouts seem to happen more frequently with specific games (haven't seen this problem when I'm using Netflix or browsing the dashboard). My other devices (Tivo HD, Blu Ray player) all work flawlessly.

I've tried two different Xboxes, both run into the same issue. I initially hooked them up via HDMI, tried different HDMI cables, plugged into different ports on the receiver-- same issue. I swapped to a VGA/Optical and I'm still running into the problem, though less frequent than over HDMI.

The receiver is in the shop at the moment, so I'm hopeful that they can reproduce the problem.

I've seen some people complaining about this problem with DVRs, but not with Xbox. Anyone else run into this issue?

Just curious.

I have not tired DVD playback yet. I do know that Blu-Ray and Directtv looked great running through mine.

I'm just having to wait on Mitsubushi to send me a firmware update(cannot get it through site) so I can finally keep my TV and receiver hooked up properly.

I did notice this today and I know that there is not supposed to be price talk here and I'm not saying anything about the prince but.........

what is the difference between my TX-SR608 and this HT-RC260???????

Does anyone know a fix to the sound dropping from a DirectTV DVR?

Recently purchased my TX-SR608. I use a Harmony One remote to control all components (listed below). When I first turn on any of the activities, I get audio after 1-2 seconds, but no video, regardless of which component I am using. I have toswitch activities via the remote to another component, then 95% of the time the video appears. Any ideas??

TV - Panasonic TH-50PX75U
DVR - DirecTV H23 (i think)
DVD - Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S560
Roku XD

All compnents are connected VIA HDMI to Onkyo, then HDMI to TV. DirectTV and Roku remain on at all times. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I have an old 50" 720p dvi samsung dlp with hdmi to dvi with directv , and slim ps3 hooked up.

1. directv: The out of the box picture is flat and smooth compared to crisp sharp and rich component straight from directv to tv. I'm using thru on hdmi setup. Is this where I need to do the vcr/return trick to get all processing out? And I have to give up osd., right?

2. My Audyssey setup choice is greyed out? why? using 5.1 config and zone2.

thanks

The HT-RC260 doesn't have the VGA or network options. That and it's not THX certified. Aside from that, they are one in the same. I have the 260. Didn't need the VGA, LAN or THX certification. It's a thing of beauty. And if you go to Newegg.com, you'll find a better deal on the RC260.

Also, swapping the optical cable with a new one worked! Beautiful sound from the XBox 360 now!

1. Yes and see how it looks.

2. Did you run Audyssey 2EQ Auto Setup? If not that is the reason.

You can always summon the on-screen setup even when turning off the video processor. It's the overlay stuff that goes away when you turn the video processor off.

ok..

1. Ran audyssey while on my cbl/sat (directv) . Do I run it again for game (ps3)?
and each input?
2. did the vcr/return to 'skip'... the component to tv is still much richer and sharper than thru the receiver hdmi-->dvi (50" samsung dlp 720p 65n). Is there something else to check that could be 'contaminating' the signal?

thanks

1. You don't run Audyssey 2EQ Auto Setup for each source. But it can apply Audyssey choices to each source (read the OM page 25).

2. Read the first post in this thread.

Yes. The new cables from Monoprice did the trick. Those cables are pretty beastly compared to the optical cable that came with my 360. Thank you for the help!

Hi Guys,

I bought the 260 last week and so far so good thanks to all the help here.

I tried to read through as much of these posts as possible and I believe I read that the last input used will be the pass-through output (when enabled), is that correct?

I was hoping that it was possible to name/use a different "default" pass through whenever the avr is put into standby? Make any sense?

For example, I would like the cable box to be output whenever the avr is in standy mode, regardless of what the avr was doing prior to being shutdown, so the wife can just use it without any confusion or starting anything else.

Thanks for any help!

Derek.

Hi Derek, it uses the last HDMI Input before turning the receiver Off (Standby), so you are correct.

Its not possible using an Onkyo, only Denon AVR (that I know of) has the feature to choose either Last or one of the other HDMI input before putting into Standby.

Suggestion to run HDMI to Tv and Optical to receiver from cable box. Negative to this is you have two HDMI Input to switch (one from receiver and one from cable box). Or get a Harmony remote (or other remote) that can be programed to switch over to cable box input before turning Off receiver (Standby).

Harmony (890 and 900 model) is the best WAF and investment I every made.

FYI, there is an "Official Logitech Harmony One thread" with lots of info or to search and to post your questions.

Hi guys,

I am currently using 5.1 system (JBL SCS 200.5).
Basically satellite speakers with powered sub.

The specs are here:
Response Bandwidth 35 - 20000 Hz
4 x Satellite speaker - 2-way - 40 Watt - 110 - 20000 Hz - 8 Ohm - Wired , 1 x Center channel speaker - 2-way - 50 Watt - 100 - 22000 Hz - 8 Ohm - Wired , 1 x Subwoofer - 100 Watt - 35 - 160 Hz - Wired

Just wondering what is the best crossover freq i should be using?

Am i able to set to THX 80hz for all the speakers and sub?

Thanks!

Hi ecurbw, IMO run Audyssey 2EQ Auto Setup and allow the receiver to set your crossover freq.

If manually adjusting your system then ensure you set it above the lowest frequency the speakers can handle. Being a small satellite speakers I suggest starting at 120Hz.

The small 3" drivers in those satellite speakers will not be capable of much below 100Hz/110Hz (center/others), meaning it may damage the drivers.

Let me first say I've read thru a majority of this thread, implementing recommended video settings such as video processor: skip as well as other suggestions.

However I am having trouble getting video to display on the TV without enabling the video processor.

I've got a time warner cable DVR scientific atlanta cable box, a samsung ln 4665 LCD tv and a samsung BD player running into the Onkyo 608. The receivers HDMI out goes into HDMI 1 on the TV.

With the processor enabled, the picture comes on immediately every time I power the TV/Rec/Cable on. However, I notice occasional audio skipping.

With the processor disabled, and with the other recommended video settings found within this thread, Most of the time I turn everything on I get audio with no video signal.

I've tried setting the HDMI out to through, as well as auto.

When I have no video signal, sometimes -I'd guess about 20%- if I change the cable channel with the remote, the signal will come on and then it's fine until the unit is powered off/on.

Twice when powering on with video processor disabled I've had a message pop on on the TV screen with a yellow box with the TV video working behind it. It only stays on the screen for less than a second before the entire video signal drops, so I cannot read what it's saying. Something about your TV doesn't support a mode...etc.

Anyone have experiences with Samsung LCD's and Onkyo 608's ?

Thanks

This problem (HDMI handshake issue) occures not only with Samsung LCD's, unfortunately . Try select another input on AVR (e.g. GAME or VCR/DVR) and then return to BD/DVD input

I'll try that tonight. Thanks.

What I'd like a better understanding of is why the video works 100% of the time when I have the AVR video processor enabled. (Audio drops however)I don't want it enabled I just want it passing through.

Also a footnote, I am using HDMI 1.3 cables. Not 1.4.

I don't have Onkyo 608, but have the same problem with my HTPC (ATI HD4200 and ATI 5670) connected to Onkyo 508 and Philips LED (connected to HDMI out). HDMI handshake issue may occur, when source (e.g. BD-player or HTPC-computer) lost EDID info about HDMI connection. AFAIK there is no 100% easy solution (may be some time later, when manufacturers will fix all bugs in firmware), but there is a class of devices that can be guaranteed to solve the problem - see google for Gefen HDMI Detective Plus (EDID reader / writer )

Hello, I have read 38 pages but I decided to post this now while I catch up with the rest of the pages.

I bought the 608 receiver and also ordered the following speakers:

1 x Polk Audio CS2 Series II Center Channel Speaker

2 x Polk Audio Monitor70 Series II Floorstanding Loudspeaker (used as front side speakers)

2 x Polk Audio Monitor50 Series II Floorstanding Loudspeaker (used as rear side speakers)

I also plan to use my previous samsung surround speakers as the back speakers and the sub from it until I can afford to buy 2 pole subs and 2 more 50's as the back sattelites.

Now I have three concerns. First will my setup work or will the use of my inferior samsung speakers in some way damage the rest of my setup?

Secondly what would be the best speaker wire I should invest in for my setup and mind you I own my house so I want to get this job done right. I dont mind paying a little extra to get the higher quality stuff.

and Third can I use the speaker wire I have from my samsung surround or will that cause damage to my setup? The reason I ask this is that my speakers should arrive soon and id like to use my current wires while I wait for the high quality stuff (once I figure what that is).

Also my living room is an odd size, it has a 22 feet tall ceiling and a stair case thats next to the couch so not sure how to properly position the 2 subs (currently one sub but next paycheck ill get another one).

I will try to post some pics of the living room once I get home.

Thanks in advance ^_^

EDIT: My samsung surround model is HT-TX72
