So i've had this unit for about 4 months and had to change the settings on the ps3 to stop the flashing or whatever you call it. With Blu-rays and PS3 games it works fine but when i throw in a normal dvd it has the random flash. Audio never is affected, just the picture. Anyone know what i need to change to make normal dvd's play without a glitch?

One of the things though is that I need more HDMI ports. i just picked up an Xbox and my PS3, Logitech Revue and Xbox all are using HDMI ports (plus my laptop which I occasionally have to reach around the back to plug in

It's on sale at Newegg right now for $379 free ship. They had a $50 gift card with it but I just missed that .

Price talk is really not playing by the rules on this thread .. that said, why not just get an HDMI switcher if that's your main beef .. ??

Yeah I know I thought other's might be intrigued from the price Also I was talking about it in terms of if I want to make a decision before any sale goes away

I guess I could it's just my cabinets are getting awfully cluttered.

Plus maybe an excuse for a new reciever

I guess I'm wondering what (if any) improvements i might notice coming from a 674 to this; if any.

You get more HDMI ports.

You Get Video Upscaling

You get HD-Audio Decoding

OSD

Other than those improvements - Not much

Not a bad upgrade, though ..

Hi all,

I have a HTPC which is connected to 608 through HDMI. Here is what I notice:

1) I cannot listen to music from the PC (iTunes, Pandora, etc) if TV is off (HDMI is dropped)... I assume this is normal
Will this be corrected if I connect the audio from PC to 608 over an optical cable instead (i.e. I can listen to music with TV OFF?)

2) I have multiple sources on HTPC. Unfortunately I cannot get any of them to Zone 2. I assume this is normal operation, since Zone 2 can only source analog inputs, correct?

So this seems like a catch 22 - You can only listen to HTPC source material in Zone 2 if you connect the HTPC to the 608 over analog... i.e. compromise your movie watching experience.

Is this all correct, or am I missing something?

Thanks!
Use a SPDIF for your audio from the HTPC and you'll be fine. Means running an extra cable but it's your video card's interpretation of HDCP that's causing it to drop both audio and visual when no display is available for handshake.
Thanks. But even with spdif, i will not be able to use this source for zone 2, correct?

That's not how I understand it. Zone 2 outputs to a seperate amp via analogue stereo but if you just have speakers in another room then yes you will only hear stereo but I don't think you need to run an extra cable.

Even my old 600 does this just fine.

I will be buying more speakers and a sub in the coming months. On my Onkyo my speakers are set at full range for LF and RF and center is 70hz. When LPCM is outputted I lose the DTS HD MA.

SORRY I missed your reply - AVS is notifying everyone about some e-mail
problems. I just got the e-mail on your reply.

Setting the PS3 to LPCM does turn off the LIGHT on your 608 that says DTS-HD
because the PS3 is doing the decode. You are loosing nothing in sound quality.

On the other had with only a 3.0 system - I have no clue what the 608 will
do RIGHT or WRONG in that Scenario. I hope you have the 608 configured
for 3.0.

I'm not sure what to recommend with that configuration. Low Freq sound
with NO Subs could be a problem. AGAIN double check your 608 to make
sure it knows the system is 3.0 with NO SUB. In the 3.0 configuration you
should use OPTICAL for Audio - forcing the system to handle simple audio
and NOT HD Audio.

Hi folks,

I inherited an old Toshiba HDX RPTV, and was wanting to use it's built in speakers for my center. While the TV does offer this option (to use the speakers as a center channel), it only allows for an RCA input. Is there any way to hook this up to my 608? Is it even worth the effort? My current center speaker isn't that exciting (Polk CS1), hence my question. Thanks.

If the panel the RCA's are mounted to can be removed, take it off and rewire it with speaker connectors ..

I'm looking at a Denon AVR1611, Pioneer VSX1020 or Onkyo TXSR608. The Pioneer doesn't have ARC or Standby Pass Through, and the Denon has a minimal number of inputs and outputs. That leaves the Onkyo, but I'm concerned about the 608s video stutter problem. Can someone explain it to me in layman's terms? What input sources does it occur with? Is there a less intrusive solution than turning off the OSD?

Got my 608 on tuesday. Everything works great. Even passes 3d from my direct tv to my mits 73738 perfectly. No complaints!

This is the stutter problem that I was referring to:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/receivers/1...o-stutter.html

Pro reviews on the 608 are good, but the Pros don't always uncover every bug in a device. The stutter has been reported on more than one of the owners forums.

drhank (and others), can you replicate these settings and see if the stutter occurs?

Jeff

Jeff - do not be a newbie.

ANY Blu-Ray player and ANY AVR sending 24 fps to a display that can not handle 24 fps has Stutter.

It is standard. It is not the player and it is not the AVR. It is not a bug. It is how HDMI works.

Since it's unlikely we have the exact equipment as you, it would be impossible to replicate .. as well, had this issue really been an issue, a real reviewer would have picked up on it ..

An OSD of the type the 608 uses requires a degree of processing, otherwise you would have no OSD .. this, I believe is also mentioned in your link ..

Lastly, you may want to Google 24fps and study up on it .. the stuttering is related to set up and display device, not the 608 ..

...true that if we couldn't read then this perhaps wouldn't be the best place to come for help... but it's more that we're perhaps not the most technical of people & alot of the book is jargon to us, that's all...
The problem seems to be that he can't get the true hd or Dolby icons to come up on the display as shown in the manual, when DTS is selected under listening modes no sound comes out?
I'm probably best to go back to the shop where I bought it & ask them?....

Also under audio selector sound only works when PCM is selected?

Thanks, I don't mind people being blunt, I am a manager in retail & have been for many yrs & prefer people who are .. to the point... I've just told him he needs a new Blue Ray player, he has had his one a few years now... at least he can stop constantly goin back & forth through the bloody menus & maybe we can get on with our saturday night!!
Thanks all

When I asked for an explanation in layman's terms I thought it would be obvious that I definitely AM a newbie. Not much I can do to remedy that other than to ask questions and do some research. Your (both hank & dragn) second reply finally addressed that end. Thanks.
