No. Audio is out from the Onkyo to the speakers. I have the HDMI
Audio TV Out/off
HDMI Control/on
ARC/Off
Power Control/Off

I have messed with those and changing those does not remove the line at 1080i.

Well I'm just guessing here, but try connecting RCA cables from converter out to tv audio in to completed a HDMI handshake.

Thanks for the explanation, but just to take it a stage further, what's the advantage, then, of transmitting a TV programme in DD 2.0 (which comes with High Definition programmes in the UK) as opposed to PCM 2.0 (which comes with Standard Definition)?

Thanks

Unfortunately, I can't test that theory. I don't have any audio cables going to the TV.

Hi guys I just bought a refurb sr608 and i just set it up. However, when I try to play audio through it with dolby, audysse and such it will play for a couple mins and after that it just produces a static sound which comes out of only the right speaker. However, if i play through just passthrough, it will play fine. Do you guys have any clue what i can do to fix this?

Anyone? Hidden Menu?

Trick 720p
I'm not sure anyone wants you to find out but there is a trick in having the unit up convert your SD sources to 720p. This is done easily by entering a hidden menu (or read secret) by pressing the following sequence: 01 - Power on the receiver, no matter what channel. 02 - Press AUX on the front and keep pressing it while you press once on the Power button. The display will show Resolution: Auto. 03 - Press left on directional keys in the front of the receiver and it will change to 720P. 04 - Press Return under the directional keys to get out of the secret menu. You can undo this setting if at any time you feel you rather have normal image again, not up-scaled to 720p.

anyone?

OK, hope someone can help me with this and I will try and explain it as best as I can.

I have my Onkyo TX-SR608 playing out to my Optima HD66 projector. This works great for watching any and everything I have hooked up to it. Mac Mini, ATT Uverse, WD Live, Wii game system. BUT if I want to listen to itunes from the Mac mini or stream Pandora from the WD Live TV +, I have to power up the projector.

Rather than powering up the projector and killing bulb life, I would like to hook up a basic 7 monitor to view the video out put and play itunes or anything that does not need to be projected onto the 45"x85" screen.

I tried using the Monitor Out RCA jack with two different 7 LCD color monitors but no signal is ever picked up.

Is Monitor out not be available when HDMI is primary connection?

Is it a resolution issue?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

this would make Home Theater life and wife very happy

Trying to come to a decision on a new receiver. The 608 fits the bill in terms of what I'm looking for. However, as a former Harman Kardon AVR-247 owner, I really do not want to go through the nightmare of another buggy receiver again.

So, I guess my question is - have its issues been resolved? Was it a bad batch?

Thanks!

Hey guys i have my tx-sr608 and im confused about something. Sorry if this was already answered but i cant find it. I have a 5.1 system hooked up to it right now plus front hight. In the speaker setup menu it gives me the option to change the rear surround to front hight (which i did) and the zone 2 to to either rear surround, front hight, or front wide. I was planning on buying a set of speakers and setting zone 2 to front wide, so i can have front high and front wide at the same time. Will this work? I thought it would but i cant find an answer.

Yes, called the useless Onkyo "support team" who read off a script and did the reset procedure. Was the same in all regards. I just can't believe it - bought refurb stuff before - not just because of price but because they test it - and never had a problem.

Is it bad luck or a bad product all together???

Rec'd 2nd one on Thursday, set it up and worked perfect. Saturday, turned it on to a purple tv picture - swapped cables, sources, etc. Then did reset and went back to normal. This morning, turned on and POP, shuts off and starts to SMOKE with acrid electrical smell.

ONKYO offered no response other than replacing with another one...I don't think so...sending it back. Poor customer relations.

I know this is TX-SR608 thread but could anyone recommend another similar receiver that I can get for under $300 delivered (this was $288) that will be more reliable??

Also, would anybody like to purchase an ipod dock that I no longer need??? (UP-A1)

These were both refurbs, right? Where'd you get it from?

Both refurb directly from ONKYO (shoponkyo.com).

Looking at Denon 1911 and Yamaha A700 but will cost more with less features.

You could not have saved that much - these are inexpensive units.

WHY fool around with a Broken One.

We are not suppose to quote price but I'm sure your keyboard can type AMAZON

Newegg had them cheaper than Amazon, not sure if they still have stock though...

Refurbs aren't all that bad, except for Samsung and Onkyo, it seems.

Amazon? You'll overpay going that route. Try Brandsmart. New 608s are selling for the same price as refurbs, In-store only though.

I just might throw caution to the wind and go pick one up tommorrow.

I have LG BD590 Blu-ray player connected to Onkyo TX-SR608 through HDMI. I tried Blu-ray and some files through Dlna server. After 15 or 20 minutes the audio drop outs for 5 seconds and then it happens after some time. If I connect the HDMI out from Blu-ray player to TV and pass the audio to receiver thru Digital Audio it workd fine but the audio quality is bad. Is this the problem with the receiver or player? I tried with other HDMI cables but same result.

My setting:
On LG BD590: HDMI Audio is set to Pass-Thru
SW version: latest

UPDATE:

I just picked up a 608 for myself. We'll see what happens... If anyone in South Florida cares, they have 7 left at that location.

I have a samsung captivate android phone. How can I connect this phone to the receiver and play music from my phone?
I received my brand new SR608 in the mail yesterday, and hooked it up immediatly. Although I quickly noticed the 24hz/24p stutter issue: I have a Windows 7-based HTPC hooked up to it, and mouse movement is jerky/stuttering when set to 24hz, but fine when set to 50hz/60hz. This is also the case in video playback in Mediaportal. I tried the following to fix it:
  • Disabled OSD
  • Enabled game mode
  • Set HDMI resolution to 'through'
  • Set VProcessing to 'Skip' using VCR/Return trick
  • Turned off all RIHD-related features (power/tv control etc.)

All this doesn't fix it. This is about every possibility I've found across the world wide web that could fix it, but neither of them do.
Are there more things I could try? Even if the VProcessing thing had worked, I will NOT sacrifice anything (OSD feature in that case) to have this 400 euro machine work correctly.

What do you guys think I should do? Try getting a replacement maybe, or does every single SR608 suffer from this?

Just hook it up with a male<->male 3,5mm plug to the headphones jack.

Hi Sunil,

I don't know what is the problem in your scenario, however, playing blu-ray on BD590 hooked up to SR608 through HDMI (1.3x cable) works just fine for me. I tested DLNA a while back which worked fine as well. Although, I don't remember for how long I played movie through it. Wish I could be more help. BD590 is great...now only if it had feature to create your own custom playlists (for 1000s of MP3s you could store on it ) That'd be a different thread for me to rant.

Hi,

I have finally setup HT with 7.2 Polk speakers. It sounds great. However, I would like further tune individual speaker sound.

For example, I'd like to only test only side surround speakers (turn off front, center and rear surr,etc.). Is there any setting in TX-SR608 to listen to speakers individually (e.g. side surrounds only, or rear surrounds only).

For example, I could not find any option to turn off front main speakers in SR608 (e.g under Speaker Setup menu). Is there any way to turn off front main speakers?

The last resort (worst case) is to pull speaker cords out of SR608 for the speakers I don't want to listen from and do testing. This is very cumbersome in my setup and would like to avoid it entirely if possible.

Thanks.

SVM,

2> If connected to a PC via HDMI - curious how the MS-Windows (Vista/7) is showing the sound output properties in the playback devices?

My Nvidia GT430 GC just passes through sound (PCM multichannel if playing music or incredible HD audio formats such as DTS HD MSTR or Dolby TrueHD if playing Blu-ray). Certainly, you can then let SR608 decode it in various formats that are available to decode in SR608. If you have external sound card or onboard sound, this may allow you to decode it on PC side before passing it to SR608 through HDMI or Coax. I don't have any sound card and have disabled onboard (ASUS) HD audio in BIOS.

HTH.

I just tried connecting the cord from my phones headphone output to the "line in" input on the sr608 and tried to set the speaker from both Aux and Port and no sound comes from the speakers (or phone obviously). Is there something else I am missing? When I unplug the cord from the phone the music starts playing from the phones speaker.

EDIT: NM I am dumb. i had my received volume at 25 and that was so low I couldnt even hear the music.

Hi Folks, I have a strange problem - I have an Onkyo 608 connected to pure acoustic supernova 5.1 speakers. When I'm watching TV through my Sky connection (connected via HDMI) I hear a weird whirring noise through my rear speakers, this happens only on stations with 2 channel audio on all the 5.1 preset modes (except all channel stereo). Is the AVR not able to convert the 2.0 channel input to a 5.1 output, or is it amplifying noise as well? any suggestions?
any ideas?
