The "Official" Onkyo TX-SR608 Thread (No Price Talk) - Page 173

Hi Guys!

Issue for me with my 608.. I think to know what's the problem.. but I want to ask you too.
Let's go.

Yesterday I discovered that my receiver doesn't produce any output on the front right channel frown.gif
All the other channels are ok.
Same issue with every input and sound modes I use.
..So.. I think it's a dead channel frown.gif
A multimeter test on the channel connectors say no short circuit.
A check for voltage on the right channel report the half voltage of the left channel (with the same audio and volume).

Already played the "factory reset" card.. with no succes.

Temporary I've connected the right channel to the front wide right channel (after enabling it, obviously).. but I think a repair is needed and it's the only solution.
I've never opened this receiver.. It's the right channel out exchangable or a full board exchange is needed?

Obviously the receiver is out of guarantee from 30 August.......... rolleyes.gif

I'm hoping you can help.
I'm keen to save my HDMI board from burning out but I can't work out how to stop this without stuffing up how I view (and listen) to my components.
If I turn HDMI Control (RHID) off
or I turn TV Control off, (either one)
it then turns TV Audio Out from Auto to off.
This then means I get no TV audio through my external speakers.

I don't mind having to use a few remotes, but need TV audio through my externals.
Is it something to do with the Passthru or ARC?

So for probably the last 6 months, when I turn on my Onkyo 60, DRV and TV, more often than not I either have sound and no video, video and no sound, or I have no image or video. I thought it was my Charter Motorola DVR, so I had gotten a newer model recently. Well, last night I could not get sound or video when my wife and I were about to watch a show. I turned everything on and I had no video or sound. I went and switched out the HDMI cable with a new one, nothing changed. I then switched hdmi inputs for the dvr(cable\sat HDMI input) to the vcr hdmi and then to the AUX hdmi and there was still nothing. I then bypassed the receiver, connecting the DVR directly to my Panasonic Plasma and there was the video(and sound presumably, I have the tv speakers disabled). I was able to get the sound and video back on using the cable\sat HDMI that I was using originally, after shutting everything down again. So my question is, is my HDMI board dying? My receiver's warranty was upon July 31st.

All I get is the dreaded blue screen on the HDMI inputs for the Blu-ray player and the cable box. Those are the only HDMI inputs in use. I did confirm that if I connect those devices directly to the Panasonic plasma TV that both devices work perfectly. What is interesting is that the receiver's on-screen graphic user interface displays fine on the TV.
I went into the receiver setup and checked every setting I know how to, to no avail. As per a phone call to Onkyo technical support, I did a reset, which did not help. I was unable to check the settings on the Blu-ray player and the cable box since I cannot get them to show up on the TV. This setup worked perfectly when I first set it up back in 2010, and this is really a bummer since it sounded and looked so good when working right. Any ideas?

If anyone is interested and if it will help with some of the problems related in the recent posts, I ended up putting this 608 in a service shop in Houston. They called and said there was indeed a problem in part of the HDMI board, and that it was repaired. I am not clear on exactly what component was the problem.

Ended up costing about $250, which I guess is less than the ~$450 it would cost to purchase a new model of the same level. I wish I had sought repairs when it first crapped out because it would have been in warranty, but this is a receiver I installed at my parents' house, which is 4 hours away from where I live, and I just didn't get down there to take care of it. However, this is giving me pause about any future Onkyo purchases, as it didn't even last two years before cratering.

Hey everyone:

New to the thread and the Receiver world and i'm finding myself lost in translation when it comes to connecting my PS3 (slim) to my Onkyo TX-SR608X. I have a HDMI running from my PS3 to my Sony 3LCD TV and an optical cable running from my PS3 to the receiver (optical input 2) but I am getting no sound. Can someone help me out on this?

Oh I have my audio setup for Linear PCM. I have the video but no audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to tell the PS3 what audio output to use and type, it's in the settings menu.

Hi blackliff, as StephenRC posted go into PS3 menu and set to output to both the HDMI and Optical.

Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Multi-Output > On

But why not connect PS3 via HDMI only throught SR608 and then out to Tv?

When I am streaming content from my bluray player (netflix, music from samsung pc share manager, or pandora) I often randomly lose sound altogether. This has been going on for 2 years. I found out today that if I switch the SR608 "mode" the sound comes back. For instance, if I am in Stereo Mode, changing to any other mode, such as Dolby Music, fixes the problemc. Any idea what could cause this problem? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Eric

I have read a lot of this but it's 173 pages!

I have some basic newbie type questions. I am trying to set this up with a 5.1 system. For my TV I use a cable box, PS3, and a vcr (a lot of old Disney tapes and grandkids here!).

I am confused about the modes I should be using for each input. I do want to use audessy for set up and thx modes.

I would also like to set it up to use the hdmi return sound for when I use the TV with my antenna.

Can somebody give me a quick and dirty set up plan? There are so many options in the manual with each part of the set up I get lost.

I'm mad I also just hooked up new Bost Accoustics speakers as the rear surrounds (replacing some old book shelves) and I am not getting any sound out of them. I have to get the ladder back out and make sure I didn't screw up the connections or if I have bad speakers.

Hi dzt41j, for 5.1 make sure to connect the surround speakers to "L surr speakers" and "R surr speakers", NOT surr back.
Thanks, they are on the correct posts. I did have working speakers that I just replaced with the Soundware XS speakers, nice small ones.
Just rehooked my old speakers up and they work fine. Bad new speakers? They were factory refurbs.

I called BA and they are going to replace them. Weird it would be both speakers.

I can't seem to get any audio out trying to use ARC. I have the 608 set to tv/cd and I believe the tv is sending the audio out. It's a Samsung e7000 and I am using hdmi port 2. My hdmi cables are supposed to support it too.
Any ideas?

Seriously need some advice here! My very lightly used TX-SR608 got zapped during a lightning storm. The surge ripped through my entire home network frying TVs and computers, playstations, etc. along the way. (seems it came down the phone line and then jumped across to my cable system and my home network lines) My 608 does not output any sound when I use the FM tuner, and I am not certain about video as I haven't replaced the TV yet but I expect it will not output anything. It does power up, and the display operates normally.

Since my 608 is 2.5 years old now it is out of manufacturers warranty. Does anyone know whether or not it is worth it to take it to a service center, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new receiver? If buying a new receiver, what is comparable in features and quality to the TX-SR608? Also, the repair guy who looked at my TV said I should not be concerned about my speakers, but I am worried still, is there a chance my speakers got blown away as well? I can't test them either until I have a new audio source to connect them too.

Thanks in advance!

You need to check all the outputs. I have a 605 that got struck be lighting and the tuner will only play one speaker but the othe outputs work. Audussy doesn't work and the EQ doesn't. I'm using it for the TV and bought and new 608 for home theater duties.

Just a thought, but if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance, wouldn't it cover such a loss? If so, just take components to a repair shop and get estimates on repair. If the repair is too high, the insurance might elect to replace equipment.

BTW, the new Onkyo 616 is going for under $400 now. I believe I paid $450 when I bought the 608 for my parent's house a couple years ago. The 717 is just under $600.

I just checked all of the HDMI ports using a new tv, no signal detected from any port. No audio going through as well. I am concerned that my Energy Connoisseur speaker system may have been damaged as well. (the system was powered up when the lightning struck, was just sitting down to watch a movie). I don't have a spare receiver and can't think of anyway to test the speakers until I get the receiver replaced frown.gif

I do have homeowners insurance, but I am going to take it in the shorts as far as getting everything replaced without going heavily out of pocket. I lost two new computers (office PC and a media center box), router and switch, playstation 3, Wii, 3 TV's. etc. Literally everything connected to my network or cable lines got fried. Lucky the house didn't burn down. TV repairman that was out the other day says the receiver is wasted.

Guess it will be getting replaced as well. Was looking at the 717, that seems like a nice replacement.

With that much getting hit I would make a insurance claim. I didn't when mine got hit because after the deductible I wouldn't have gotten much but you have a lot of stuff that got hit.

I owned a repair shop for many years .. you must have sustained a very close and strong bolt for it to have done that kind of damage, and yes, you are lucky it was not much worse ..

If you live in a neighborhood, subdivision, it's very likely that your neighbors have the same issues ..

2 weeks ago, I had 2 routers / 4 NIC's get blown by a surge thru the ISP line .. but, with a $1000 deductable on my office insurance, not near enough to file a claim on ..

I immediately knew it was bad from the fact that it blew out light bulbs throughout the house, knocked pictures off the wall, and the whole place smelled of burnt circuit boards and ozone eek.gif

The bolt hit a tree right next to the house (exploding it),

jumped to the phone utility box outside (exploding it, those are shards of tree all around the telephone box),

and then somewhere crossed from the phone lines to my cable system and cat6 network cabling. When I pulled my receiver out of the console I found:

Scorch marks on my HDMI cables

and melted lacquer in several parts of the cabinet where the cabling was laying against it

Yes, I think I got seriously lucky, if the surge had jumped across to the power line circuit, it could have been much much worse.

I'm trying to compare my front to surround imaging, and have audio files to test this, however, I cannot listen while adjusting the speaker distances on the fly over HDMI. Why is this? Is there something I'm missing?

I noticed my cable box, with digi coax, lets me go into the menu and adjust settings on the fly, but I have no way of listening to these files because all my components are HDMI otherwise.

Things that make you go GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Hey guys, I'm having a bad handshaking issue with this receiver and my samsung 46ln550. It appears that it doesn't have enough time to handshake the hdmi for the audio to come back on with my ati 5xxx card. I end up having to either power cycle the onkyo or switch inputs back and forth until audio returns. Anyone have any success with EDID overrides? I've already tried HDMIyo with no avail. Thanks for the help!

It is ALWAYS the ATI card - not the receiver.

They are Notorious for BAD HDMI.

I've had the 4870, the 5870, the 6850, and currently the 7850, and none of them had handshaking issues. They worked with HDMI to my tv (Sony 40" and now a Panasonic 50" plasma) right out of the box.

I did not see you LIST the RECEIVER they went through FIRST???

Help! Odyssey setup no longer recognizes rear left speaker:

while plugging the speaker cables in receiver's Surround Back (Rear Left speaker in 7.1 setup), I mistakenly swapped wires (positive plugged into negative port of receiver) while plugging them into receiver. The Odyssey setup no longer recognizes this speaker and gives me error about ("speaker detection error"). I already tried swapping speaker wires, speakers, etc. and all seem to point onyl to receiver at this point as everything else works fine.

The speaker was recognized earlier just fine (for past couple of years without any problem) except until this mishap.

Could someone tell me what might be the problem here and how to fix it?

Thanks for your help.

Try a factory reset, by holding VCR on the front of the unit and then pressing the power button.
Remember, always always disconnect the power on your unit while changing speaker wires to be safe. As well, double check your work before powering back on.
There's a chance you shorted something out, due to a possible wire strand, but the factory reset should take care of it unless you did actual damage.
Then try the audyssey setup again.

When I go into Level Calibration, I hear white noise, then a second later the receiver shuts off. What's causing this?
