Will there be 3DTVs with passive glasses?

I'm a big fan of 3d content, however I don't like the idea of using active shutter glasses, for three reasons:

a) They need a battery. How annoying is that.
b) They're heavy.
c) I'm worried that sync between TV and glasses can be imperfect, causing flawed 3d.

Polarized glasses are cheaper, lighter, and once there's a market you could probably order them from Oakley, Rayban etc. which not only looks badass but is also really comfortable to wear.

This said, is there any hope for 3DTV with passive glasses? I think LCDs can't display polarized light (if I hold a polarizing filter in front of my computer screen it goes black), but what about the other technologies?

Polarized solutions for flat panel 3D HDTVs add significantly to the price and/or reduce the image resolution, and for that reason use of LCD shutter glasses will be the most common technology for getting 3D. Projection TV (either front or rear projection) can more easily be adapted to use polarized technology, but even then there can be issues of additional cost.

Yeah, I think the trade off is that a TV designed for use with polarized glasses will be less than ideal for viewing non 3D content. Until there is enough programming and other 3D content available to justify a dedicated 3D only TV I suspect the glasses will continue to be the way to go.

Of course you can get a polarized 3DTV.

This 46-inch JVC is only $9k and is 540p in 2D mode. Enjoy.

LOL - that is one of the JVC Pro products. It may be the Hyundai 46" Xpol 3D LCD just with their name on it and a doubling of the price. Last I looked, you could buy one in Japan (who has had 3D for some time and these are what they have been buying) for about $4500. JVC does not make all their own products. It is meant and used in the professional market.
