Viewsonic PJD6531W

I can't seem to find any threads on here about this projector, so I thought I'd ask outright, does anyone own or has anyone had a chance to demo one of these? My beloved Panasonic AE500 is finally starting to die on me and it's looking like I'll need to replace it before the end of the year. As tempting as the AE4000 is, with all the new changes in displays right now I just can't justify to myself spending that much on a projector until the dust settles. I'm looking at the sub $1000 market right now, paying extra attention to the 720p 3d projectors and this and the Optoma HD66 caught my eye. Unfortunately, the Optoma customer service folks have ignored my e-mails with questions I had regarding the unit and, after getting burned pretty badly on customer service with a prior unit (different company), I don't feel comfortable buying from a company that shows that much disinterest in a potential customer.

On paper, the Viewsonic looks like it has a lot to offer, especially in its price range and opposite the HD66, but on paper and in reality are two very different things.

Does anyone have any experience with the PJD6531W?

There is one review of it on amazon but other than the announcement of this projector I haven't found anything either. Maybe more will come forward.

I have recently purchased this projector and LOVE it sofar. it outperforms the acer H5360 and the Optoma HD66 in almost every way. it's brighter and colors are very good right out of the box and can handle greys well so dark games are not a problem. There are a ton of tweakable image settings but was pretty good right out of the box. Using this in a room with ambient light is no issue at all. Very little rainbow effect compared to the other two (for me anyway). it is supposed to be supported by nvidia vision but their most recent driver which supposedly works with it does not recognize it as a supported projector. However, I spoke with nvidia serveral times and they assure me the fix is on the way. Other than that, it's a great little projector and I have no complaints whatsoever with it. Has a normal remote control with good functionality without having to menu yourself to death, a carrying case, 2 internal 5w speakers with output for headphones or computer speakers if you're using it outside (which I do often). it is a 16x10 projector so it's less wide and more tall than the 16x9s. 3d pc games on it are just awesome...I had to use old nvidia drivers to get it to work but looks unbelievable in 3d.

Thank you for your input on the ViewSonic PJD6531w. I'm looking to get a decent 720p PJ and have narrowed it down to the Viewsonic and the HD66. I would be using this PJ for movies, not games, so is there a setting to make the 16:10 format look "normal" (i.e. change it in the menu settings to 16:9 or even 4:3 when needed)? Or is 16:10 the only setting you're 'stuck' with?
When you feed it 720p it only uses that part of the chip. So it's native 16:9.

I am about to pull the trigger on this one. Projector calculator states 100" screen from 8'6".... It is about the only native widescreen 3D ready with a short enough throw to do what I want.

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on one of these but, as I've only owned LCD projectors, am worried about the DLP rainbow and headache issues. I haven't looked into this since 2004...is it the concern today that it was then?
There is no way to choose or change it to 16:9, it's forced 16:10 but I have not noticed any big distortion in tv or movies, most of the movies I've watched have letterboxes anyway so it doesn't make a difference. Plus, Nvidia has finally come out with a certified driver for this projector and it works like a champ now. Stunning 3d images and from what they say, 3d blu ray support (through pc only as of now using cyberlink or arcsoft). I ran my compatibility program from cyberlink last night and it all passed so all I need is some 3d blu rays! There is very minimal rainbow effect on this projector (for me anyway) but with the Acer H5360 it was VERY noticeable. The HD66 is junk with a horrible picture and no support from Nvidia. They keep promising a firmware update to allow for 3d tv but it never comes. My only complaint about this projector is that it's almost too bright. (I'm using it in a light controlled basement). The default splash screen is white and almost blinds you...it is changeable but I have to keep it this way or my kid will leave it on all the time if I don't. While there is a signal it's a great picture and hard to knock in any way. I would recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a 3d projector, even ifyou don't want or need the 3d modes it's a great price on a bright projector. if you're using this with ambient light or a well lit room, this is definitely the one for you.

This is great news on PJD6531w projector. May I know what options of tweaking do we have? greyscale and CMS? I might get a 3D 720p projector for gaming and 3D movie. Currently I owned BENQ W6000 for 1080p movie.

Also can you confirm that DLP link can be turn off (to disable white flash that kill the contrast)?
I can't believe how hard it is to find a guide to (or even discussion of) implementing projected DLP-Link on an HTPC as regards drivers, graphics cards, software, etc. 3D Vision from nVidia has clearly specified requirements (correct nVidia card, Windows Vista or 7, nVidia 3D Vision package, etc.) but I can't find anything on actually using DLP-Link. Obviously, one needs a DLP-Link enabled projector and DLP-Link shutterglasses, and (if one wants to watch Bluray 3d DVDs [as I do] an appropriate DVD drive with Cyberlink PowerDVD10). Presumably, a standalone 3D-ready DVD player avoids these concerns, but that's not what I want to do.

Can anyone clarify whether I'll need a specialized stereo 3D driver suited to my nVidia graphics card, specialized stereo video player for playing 3D videos (in various formats from the web), whether I am OK with HDMI 1.3 or do I really need to be concerned about HDMI 1.4, etc.?

Thanks

Jack

This PJ sounds like a better deal than the Optoma HD66 or the Acer H5360 both in the same price range of this PJ.. On top being brighter the PJ has a 3 year warranty and 1 year on the bulb! I'm wondering why not many more people are buying it over those two PJ judging from the number post on each PJs thread..
I'm also interested in this projector, mainly because of the short throw distance am high brightness (100" from 8.5ft is awesome!). For me the 3D ready is just a nice-to-have, but not something I will use right away.

However, I can't find anything about the color wheel speed. Can anyone confirm if this is a 2x/3x/4x wheel and RGBCMY setup please? I'm running an Optoma HD70 currently (I believe 4x wheel and RGBRGB), and don't see rainbows on it, but have seen them on every 2x projector I've ever used.

Lastly, and somewhat off topic, I can get the Vivitek H1080FP for only $100 more than the viewsonic, but it's not as placement-friendly for me. Any thoughts on which I should get if cost is so similar?

Thanks for any help! :-)
Uh-oh, I found one site that seems to indicate it's a 2x 7200rpm wheel:

http://www.projectisle.com.au/Product-Detail.aspx?ProdId=23816

PJD6531w Specifications:
Projection System 0.65" DLP (1)
Colour Wheel Speed 7200 rpm
Colour Wheel Segments 6 Segments (RGBCYW)

Maybe I'll need to see this one in person first....
Be carefull, I think it also has a problem with 16.9 setting and it outputs to 16.10 with NO option of changing this. Its annoying for some owners and can also effect 3d (as it stretches it).
Yeah, the 1280x800 would have been ok, as I'd be using it on an htpc and could run native resolution. But the 2x wheel is probably a deal breaker for me. A 3x might have been doable, but 2x for me has always been rainbow city. Maybe the Vivitek after all... (although I'll definitely miss the lumens and short throw). I'll still see if I can find a viewsonic to demo in Vancouver though.
Man i'm so close to pulling the trigger on this PJ!! Ahhhh!! I need to resist at least until football season!
it does not stretch the image, if a game is meant to play in 1280x720 it is displayed that way, it just produces black bars at the top and bottom. if you have it properly calibrated you can barely see the black bars. I have seen no distortion on movies or games. My only real complaint is the splash screen (which is changeable) is pure white with the viewsonic logo in the middle. due to the brightness and that I think it starts up in bright mode then settles back into eco mode if you have it set, it's blinding. However, if I don't leave like that my kid sometimes forgets to turn it off. The blinding white light is his reminder but when I'm using it it bugs me. I see it often b/c I switch from game console to pc.

In regards to the dlp link questions, yes you can turn off the dlp link mode, all you have to do is run it in standard mode. There is a 3d mode which turns it on, an nvidia 3d vision settting, then standard no 3d. However, i've confirmed that with 3d mode on both the nvidia and dlp link works. And the dlp link works MUCH better with the nvidia drivers than the iz3d drivers. I'm super dissapointed in dlp link in general. There is little to no support from it. It has very few drivers that work with it for games and even fewer for movies. Forget about 3dbr (for now at least). I recommend the nvidia vision setup for anyone playing games or wanting to watch 3dbr. The glasses are lighter, much more comfortable than the bulky and heavy dlp link xpand x102's, and rechargeable whereas the x102's have a proprietary battery. You can get extra nvidia glasses for 125 bucks, I paid 160 for the x102s. Yes it's a $200 system but you get the glasses with it so for only 40 bucks more you get infinitely better 3d images and a reputable company name that has been doing 3d since before it was the thing to do. I'm tellin ya... pc games in 3d will blow your mind and these days most of the good ones are available on pc, playing them in 3d is just next level awesome.

I wish I had espn 3d to test it with but it's not coming till November. ;-( I've heard others using a hdmi-in video capture to do 3d tv and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work. I've found several side by side stereoscopic videos that work perfectly well with this setup (which is supposedly what espn3d is broadcast in). the 3d trailer for how to train your dragon was just as good as when i saw it in the theatres.

Thanks for all the input you've posted about the PJ fernanz.. Any way you can post some screen shots of this PJ in action?
as per the spec it would seem this projector does not do 1280x720 at 120hz, and that the highest resolution at 120hz is 1024x768. This would mean no 720p HD at 120hz if that were true. Can someone that owns this please comment?

Update: It appears that this may have been the initial spec when first released, as I found some websites that suggested this was the case when the projector first announced.

My new concern is the 16:10 native aspect ratio of the projector, when so much material is 16:9 (1280x720 or 1920x1080). Does it simply take a 720p input and display it with black bars or does it scale it to 800p and stretch the image?
I am strongly considering purchasing this projector and returning the awfully buggy Acer H5360. The broken ECO mode bug is something I cannot live with.

But this projector doesn't appear to be without its own issues, which has me concerned. I found a post on the NVidia forums that lists a few issues.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=171489

Primarily it states that when viewing 3D content at 1280x720p @120Hz the projector scales this to its native 1280x800 resolution, which is quite noticeable. Is this true?

There also seems to be an issue with being able to update the firmware properly using the RJ45 ethernet port. Has anyone successfully updated the firmware? Thank you.

Nvidia has provided a temporary solution for the owners of the Viewsonic PJD6531w 3D DLP projectors and 3D Vision running into problems when setting up 3D mode using the 3D Vision wizard.Have in ind that what they've published is just a temporary workaround until a fix is made available (probably with the release of the next driver update). The step by stem guide available as a knowledgebase article will give you directions for configuring the Viewsonic PJD6531w with the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and it is available here: since i have under 3 posts i cannot post the url so google Workaround Solution for Viewsonic PJD6531w Users with 3D Vision it will take you to 3dvision-blog.com and than click url

The cause of the bug is that the software is choosing the optimal mode reported by the projector which in case of the Viewsonic PJD6531w is 1280×800. However, the projector needs to run at 1280×720 rezolution @ 120Hz and thus the wizard will report an error. Nvidia is hoping to have a fix for that issue ready by the next 3D Vision driver update and meanwhile if you already bought Viewsonic PJD6531w projector, then you can use the temporary workaround for the time being

im interested in purchasing the XpanD x102's but do you really believe nvidia's glasses have a better image quality because i've read that the X102's actually have the brightest clearest image but i figured i get the actual factuals from a true user of both. feel me in
post #22 of 48
Hey MeNaCe183, i have a pair of the X102's that I don't really use. They have hardly been used and I have 3 extra batteries and the tool. I'd be willing to part with them for 100 bucks + 5$ shipping. email me if you're interested.

As far as the quality goes, i see no difference whatsoever in PQ when using either glasses. To be honest, they're a little nicer b/c they don't cause infrared interference with other components and you don't need to have the emitter right in front of me. Since I already have 2 pairs of the nvidias I'd like to have them all be the same and why I'm getting rid of them. You can use them both at the same time if the dlp link mode is on instead of nvidia mode.

Let me know if you're interested.

well im in the process of saving up for a i5 gtx 460 pc and the 6531w along with other things so i cant really afford it at the moment but thx for the offer I'll check with you in the future just in case. Im interested in the X102's because their compatible with both the ps3 and 3d vision, I'm hoping sony decides to include more options for hdmi 1.3 such as page flipping like on avatar and invincible tiger so i can play certain games in 3d that are not avail on the pc. In order for the 3d vision to recognize the 6531w does the emitter have to plugged into the pc or can that be achieved with other methods? because my plans were to purchase the x102's but from what i read i may have no other choice but to buy the 3dvision bundle and by the x102's seperate which isnt to bad? let me know
post #24 of 48
yes, the emitter has to be plugged in in order to enable stereoscopic mode on the pc. I actually have an extra emitter b/c I just bought a new laptop that came with the vision setup but I already had the kit. I don't necessarily need 2 emitters and I'd be willing to sell that for 50 bucks if you're interested in that. However, there are several other solutions that could work with the x102's such as the iz3d drivers and I believe there may be another one. However, the quality of the 3d is far superior on the nvidia software, they also pop up the ideal graphics settings to set to get the best picture. They really have a good product....a bit overpriced I think but well worth it especially since i can do 3d bluray. I downloaded the cyberlink mark II and bought the 3dbr of cloudy with a chance of meatballs and I gotta say it looks just as good as it did in the threatre. It integrates with the nvidia software perfectly and even converts movie files and regular dvds to 3d on the fly!!! And people have been paying 3-4k for a new 3dtv, 3-400 for a 3dblu ray player, and i can do the same thing with my existing 4 year old pc, $75 video card, and a $80 blu-ray drive and my $650 projector. Woot!!
Oh, and I wouldn't hold my breath on the ps3 changing their default 3d settings. I had initial hopes that it would work but now I doubt that'll ever happen. maybe a few years down the road when one of my tvs fail I'll get a 3d enabled tv (especially since the price will hopefully drop by then). But for now, I've got pretty much all the 3d content I need on the pc and using the xbox controller though the pinnacle software recognizes the ps3 controller as a blutooth device but I haven't really tried that out much. How cool is that?
you are completely right about the pc content because practically all the great cross platform games are avail on the pc, so i'll stick with the 3d vision setup and use the ps3 for exclusive titles like drakes misfortune GOW3 etc.. so how's the contrast on the pjd6531w? and is the HDMI setup pretty sharp?
will connecting the Mitsubishi 3-DA1 3D Adapter between this pj and hdmi 1.4 3d frame packed sources like the ps3, panasonic bluray player, and directv allow you to watch their 3d content.
Almost 100% sure it won't. Since the pj can't accept checkerboard, only 120Hz frame-sequential, there's no way to decode the signal. Now if someone made a checkerboard to 120Hz adapter, then we're talking.

Nope... the only 3D available on this projector is 3D Vision's 120hz sequential. It's their system and what the projector was designed for.

They say you can do direct TV with an Avermedia HDDVR PCIe card in an HTPC. I am getting there, I don't have that working yet.
You can take anything in via the Avermedia HDDVR, and play it live with Stereoscopic Player. With the 3dfier plugin, you can to fake 3D with anything. It will also take any side-by-side input, and display it in 3D in realtime.

I don't have DirecTV, but it should work, if you can spoof the EDID.
