Do Most Projectors Have AR Patterns For Zooming?

To clarify my question:

I'm using the JVC RS20 in a "zooming" set up, using 4 way masking. It's working wonderfully well. Re-sizing the image and zooming takes seconds.

What is very helpful is that when I press the "Zoom" and "Shift" function on the RS20 it throws up a nice clear pattern on the screen, outlining various ARs (16:9, 1:85:1 I think, 2:35:1 and 4:3). That pattern makes it super easy to re-size the image even without a movie playing.

So, when it comes to upgrading my projector in the future, I'm wondering about other projectors: is it typical for a projector (especially around this price point) to have such a lens pattern feature with the ARs depicted? I might be bummed a bit if my next projector doesn't have this.

It wouldn't be a deal breaker; I could always use the actual movie image to fit, but I do like the option of the lens pattern.

Thanks

I've never seen anything like that, though I've also never had a projector with remote control zoom.

What projector is that, Fabricator?

The JVC pattern is definitely more detailed.

I wonder if Jason or another AVSforum employee can chime in, having seen so many projectors in their line of work.

Rich - can you post a pic of the JVC pattern?

Thanks!

Ok, I'll try to post a photo of the JVC pattern.

Can anyone - Jason? - else chime in on this?

Rich, are you needing to refocus with each change? Am guessing yes as someone prior had said even small changes in zoom / shift changed the focus a bit.

When are you going to post some pics???

You know what? The focus seems to change so little when I re-size that I almost never bother re-focusing (and when I do check focus up close I can rarely see a difference). The image looks pin-sharp whether it's blown up big or made smaller. I'm frankly amazed how convenient this zooming system has turned out to be.

At some point I plan to post pictures and hopefully some video of the masking system + zooming feature in action.

Rich, the zooming on the JVC's are indeed convienient. Almost too much, as I find myself tweaking way too much I always refocus after doing anything with the zoom. While the difference isn't drastic, I still find a subtle shift. What PJ are you thinking of upgrading to? Moving away from JVC in general?

I've never found the need to refocus when zooming either my previous dVision 1080p or my Lumis, but I am only zooming from 106" wide to 118" wide, so it isn't a big change. And my 2 screens are only 5" apart at most.

While the Lumis has an AR pattern, I never use it. I use a paused movie - whatever we are about to watch that is requiring me to zoom to a different aspect ratio.

I'm not planning on a change in projectors soon. It's just that, when I was recently programming more pre-set image size/ARs into my remote, I noted how convenient the AR pattern has been to use on my JVC, so I wondered if
that was something I'd have to likely give up, or if it's something I should expect to have, when I decide to upgrade projectors.

ETA: For kicks I was fooling around with my zoom/remasking while timing how long it takes. I've got it down to around 15 seconds to re-size the screen and fit the image to the screen. (E.g. changing from a 16:9 AR to a new 2:35:1 AR sized image). Lowest time was 12 seconds.

Changing the iris setting affects the focus enough to require a refocus to obtain maximum sharpness on the JVCs. See Mark Petersen`s Bloq Videovantage.
