the technology on hdtv has been in hyperdrive for the last couple of years and im no longer sure what's the best 60 inch lcd out there now for less than $5k. what would you guys suggest?

my present tv's

1. fugitsu plasma vision p50xha30. 8 yrs old and will always love this and paid 7k for it.
2. mitsubishi LT-37132. worst purchase ever. paid 3k for this junk
3. sony xbr9 52 inch and 40 inch. love these lcd; bright, the bezel is subtle and the semi-gloss surface is perfect for a bright room. got both these at bestbuy for a reasonable deal.

Not too much selection available in 60"+ for LCDs still. There will be some larger models for 2010, but they're not all released yet.

I think one of, if not the best at the moment may still be last years local dimming Samsung B8500. It tops out at 55" though.

There are large LCDs in the pipeline, but not in stores yet. You would do well to wait 3-6 months till all the new stuff, including the premium models from Vizio are in stores.

Looks like manufacturers are moving towards edge-lit and waiting to release their back-lit models. I don't think we know yet how the newest generation of edge-lit models "precision dimming" will compare with back-lit local dimming. Samsung claims to have eliminated flashlighting with its edge-lit models but no objective testing that I know of.

Too early to tell yet I think for who has the best large screen LCD this year. I am curious to see how the high-end Sony, Samsung, and LG models look like though for 2010.

Sony 60EX500 and 60EX700(LED) should already be at your local BB, Samsung's 60" should be out in May

i've seen the smaller EX500/700's in local stores recently but not a single 60" model.

the 60" models will be using new X-gen Sharp panels as they are the only 60" LCD made that i know of off the top of my head

I got a chance to compare 60 inch 500 and 700s last week, in a small high-end AV store that does a good job of setting them up and providing good feeds. They were both excellent. There was little to choose to my eyes, the 500 was slightly better at off-angle image, the 700 in black detail and color punch. Overall I'd take the 700 by a small margin.

what about the sony ex800 series that's on their website. i can't decide between the edge lit monolith of the ex800 or the standard lcd's that you guys are talking about. i notice that it's only the 800 series that have the bravia 3 engine and the 240 mhz flicker rate. which one would you guys pick?

How do you know this? I thought there were NO uv2a panels out at the moment. I saw a 60ex500 at a local small av shop. Nice, but I don't think I was looking at an x-gen/uv2a anything.
