NYC Studio Setup

I've been a lurker for a while here and learning as much as I can. Here is my (budget) setup so far...

TV: Samsung 40" 7000 Series
Receiver: Pioneer Elite VSX90TXV
Center: EMP E5Ci
Mains: EMP E5Ti Towers
Surround: Paradigm Atom V.2
Subwoofer: Hsu VTF3 MK3
Content Source: Verizon FIOS top of the line service
Video: PS3 Slim
Backlight: Ikea Dioder strips
Media Furniture: Ikea Tobo

Dude.. If you are living in Manhattan, you need to move to Staten Island where I am.. I can bet you can rent a house for the price of that studio.

Haha. As far as I'm concerned, if I want space, I'll just move back to Houston, TX. But for now, I'm loving life. It's actually in Long Island City just on the other side of the 59th St. bridge and the rent isn't too bad and I have an amazing view of the city over the water from my roof deck. It's also 15 minutes from my work in Midtown door to door.

I do have some friends in Staten Island, though and have a great time whenever I visit them.

Wow, very modern style...love that. Though for some reason, the first thing I noticed in the pics is that I have the same kitchen utensil holder/kit as you.

Thanks for all the compliments. I was looking high and low for the right media furniture, and this one caught my eye. I'd have to say that this forum and another forums similar page is what led me to use the Ikea's Tobo unit. I didn't add the legs that and found that it was much neater when it sat on the floor directly. Well, there is some cardboard in between the unit and the wood floors.

Lovely setup. I wish I had a bachelor pad in my early 20's. Unless you're a rich kid, living in this forsaken city make roommates a must.

Yes, it is expensive, but the prices have come down a lot in the past few years. It's not outrageous anymore; it's only ridiculous. I'm in my early 30's but bachelorhood is about a decade late in this city. A great place for a mid life crisis if you're single...lol.

Man, talk about focused living. You get home, go to the bathroom, go to the kitchen to eat, go to the couch to sit and watch tv, watch a movie, play a game, etc., and then go to bed, all in a nice neat progressive line. lol

Seriously though, if I lived there that's what I'd be living in, especially if the view is nice. Have any pictures of the city from your vantage point? I like the setup although the tv seems to be a bit small for being that high above the equipment. Ever think about lowering it a bit or going with something in the 50" range?

I'm sure it's a pretty big difference going from living in Houston to living in New York!

Haha. Yes, the ladies love it. Years of watching HGTV and reading home decor magazines help with the ladies more than you would think.

The TV is a bit small. It would be nice to have a 55" TV, but it's not in my budget at the moment. I needed the TV to be relatively high because I like to be able to lie in bed to watch the TV as well as to be able to watch it on the couch. It works well enough for me now. The picture is excellent enough for me to be happy with the unit.

Yes, the living situation is very organized. LOL. I like it like that. Some will call it OCD.

Here are some pics of the view from my roofdeck. The view from the balcony doesn't face the city, so it's not as nice. It's not horrible either.

Oh wow I love the second picture. It's funny because you can see just how much bigger a city NY is than Houston or Dallas (where I live) just based on the downtown alone (and that's not even the whole of downtown NY!). Amazing.

I hear you about the tv, you get what you can afford/what's in your budget. I totally understand that, that's why I bought a 50" 720 plasma when I did. It made the most sense at the time. Now though I'm looking bigger or at least true 1080p, but preferably both.

As for the OCD nah there's nothing wrong with that, I envy your ability to live in such an organized way. Having kids definitely puts a damper on the ability to live an organized life. It doesn't eliminate it but makes it very hard lol.

That picture is only of midtown. I'm going to be heading to a rooftop of a high rise in downtown to take another picture one of these days.

It's certainly more difficult to keep a place organized with kids. I have family members with kids and the place doesn't stay neat for more than a few minutes at a time. I guess I'll be there in a few years.

With TV prices always coming down, I'm sure that 1080p in a larger TV will be in your future. But again, with kids, priorities will be priorities.

40" is about perfect actually, at least, imo.

I got it at a place downtown for just $250 delivered and set up. I think it was called Downtown Furniture or something. I can look it up, if you want.

Yes, I think that's exactly the place. They have a ton of stuff for sale there for cheap. I'm sure it's not super quality or anything, but it's enough for me.

Question, are those Sanus speaker stands? I'm about to change out my media console to an Ikea Besta console and so I need speaker stands for my fronts. My SM450 fronts look to be about the same size as yours.

Thanks for the good words. Yes, they are Sanus stands that I got fom amazon for pretty cheap. They've done me well till now. I just upgraded to towers. I'll upper the page soon with more pics.
