Reed Exodus Anarchy 25hz Tapped Horn

Well here it is..Exodus Anarchy 6.5" 25hz tapped horn designed by yours truly, LilMike. Much appreciation to lilmike for sliding me the plans and letting me build it early before he measured it and made them available.

I Got the pleasure of hanging with lilmike and getting this sub measured, along with my 38hz tapped horn by volvotreter, and my THT by Bill Fitzmaurice and my def tech supercube1.

A simple/fun/cheap build with jawdropping output. I know absolutely nothing about measuring, until tonight learning a clinic from lilmike. I do trust my ears and running this one sub in my bedroom was telling me, this thing is very very very very nice, deep and clean. I cannot wait to have this coming week off and finish the other 3 for my bedroom.

As far as parts for the build, all that was needed was 1 sheet 5x5 1/2" baltic birch, terminal cup, some screws/glue, Exodus Anarchy driver, and used about a 4' x 2' 1/2" sheet of Quiet Liner Acoustical Cotton. I cut each piece of acoustic cotton in 10"-11" sections as you see in the pics.

I did have one goof. the driver didnt fit in the access panel thank god i didnt have the other side on yet. In my next three builds, I am not even going to put in an access panel. In my eyes, once the sub is in properly I dont need to accesss it anymore, plus fighitng to seal them properly, grrr

Mike will be chiming in shortly with all the measurements and stuff that he recorded, but for now here are the build pics and plans. This thing is worth every cent and more.

here are some plans i made up from mike's plans. Also a printable pdf and sketchup file, use the inside fold sketchup file to measure the inside folds, the pictures get real tight with the dimension markings.

Tidy, looking forward to the measurements.

Dude. Nice. And I was just beginning to wonder if Insubnia had quietly rolled over .

Looks great!

I have a 24" wide THT that I recently built and I am wondering if I could pair one of these with it?

The reason I ask is that I have a perfect spot to hide something this size behind the back row of seats in my theater. I have a huge room and have been thinking about adding a second THT to fill some dead spots. If one of these could pair with a THT it would be easier to find a place for it

Very tidy. I like builds like this. Lots of documentation allowing other builders to easily follow the plans and reproduce.

Thanks for your contributions.

Looking forward to your review.

I've been waiting for this! You guys are awesome. I will be building two next week to compare to my DTS-10 for kicks. How much power can it handle? What is the sensitivity of the final cab?

Believe me - this project never died, I have wood cut for two as well. I have just been busy with the rest of my life and a few other builds. First - a big thanks to Todd (radman12) for taking the plunge on these before I built and tested one. Again - you did a nice job on the build. Second - a huge thanks to Kevin Haskins over at DIY Cable. This amazing little driver would not exist without him. Finally - thanks to John (maxmercy) for introducing me to the insubnia project.

Answers to a few questions:

Pair with THT?

No - really there is nothing to be gained. There are three general criteria in designing a sub. Size, extension, and SPL. To get any two of these, you lose the third. The THT is a great example, it has good extension, and it is loud, but it is LARGE. This is the opposite direction entirely, because, at least for the rest of the world, you don't need 120 dB levels to have a satisfactory listening experience. So - for this design, I chose small and low extension, I sacrificed SPL. I know - heresy.

Seriously - this little tapped horn gives up very little when compared to a THT in room at 80 to 85 dB levels at the listening position, but it runs out of steam with higher power. Remember - we are comparing a 6.5" midbass driver to a 15" Sub driver. It does what I asked it to do very well, but comparing it to a THT at full power is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Completely different design criteria.

Power handling?

Remember, this is not a sub driver, it was really designed as a midrange. It does have a sizable XBL2 motor, and a decent amount of excursion, so I made it a sub enclosure to play in. It is good for 75 watts in the simulations, and I have found HornResp to be surprisingly accurate at predicting the drive voltages where the bad noises start. A highpass at 20 to 25 Hz is a good idea.

I'd keep going, but I have way too much to do yet this morning, and I have less than half an hour to get to my first meeting. Measurements will be posted once I get them presentable.

Take your time - good things are always worth waiting for

Man, I really want to build a couple for my folks, but I just know if they'd be up to the task. The room the HT is in is stupidly large, something like 8000 cubic feet. It'd be perfect otherwise.

love this design, I am thinking about building one but using this driver http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...products_id=33 Any thoughts about differences in output?

You'll need to use the Anarchy for this design - tapped horns are driver specific. The one in my sig will only work with one woofer currently available on the planet to my knowledge.

I just tried to model the e3.6 - it's not ideal for a tapped horn. Can't get anything good out of one or even two
post #14 of 814
that sucks, oh well
lilmike, have you had a chance to run the numbers with the original Exodus 6.5" woofer?

It's so cute! haha, I want to build one, but have no use for it =[

good job guys, looking forward to the measurements.

Excellent information on this build. I can't wait to try this. You guys did an incredible job.

It was mentioned that the 6.5" Tang Band subwoofer would also work in that box, but not quite as nice. Will you be comparing those drivers in the same enclosure? How bad would the Tang Band be?

You didn't by any chance write down all the cuts did you? Maybe like a cut sheet that could be matched up to panel's A, B, C, etc. I realize it won't be hard for everyone to get that, but if you wrote it out already, maybe a quick photo of your 'notes' would be really nice. If you don't have time to do that, I might be able to type it up next week sometime.

Also, what did you mean by this comment:

"use the inside fold sketchup file to measure the inside folds"

I know what sketchup is, but what measurements are we looking for? Are you just talking about seeing this in a clearer way:

Ahhhh yes, that will do nicely. I spoke too soon, and should've known.

NOW NOW ERICH, lets relax and finish the task at hand! The 12" coaxials lol, then you can build some little baby horns to put in your kids doll house .

as far as the cutlist goes its in the pdf, for my sanity I labeled the 4 vertical pieces as " 1st fold", "2nd" fold, "3rd fold", "4th fold" those are the pieces moving right to left after the baffle. if you guys feel it would be better understood by labeling each piece A, B, C, D with the cutsheet, I can change it up.

Nah, it's fine, I wasn't sure what you meant by checking the sketchup for the fold measurements being that they seemed to be listed already. I thought I was missing something......other than brains.

REECE, you have just been banned from the DIY forums for 60 days! Every DIY guy knows that you always look 9-15 projects in advance prior to finishing up the current build! Plus, I was hoping for more advice on those 12" coaxials, so I'll let it vegetate for a while and try the question again later. But there's no reason for you to get jealous and lash out like that!!!!! Control yourself.

I uploaded a new PDF, be sure to get it. I did not feel the presentation was right, the pdf seems complete and thorough now.

Wow, that looks great now. Very easy to follow and I can't wait to build a couple.

Just curious, do you have any plans to try out the 6.5" Tang Band inside that cabinet just for comparisons?
Guys, I was just thinking that if there's enough interest in this design, or the larger 12" Shiva version, I might be able to set up some type of flat pack shipping option. I have a fairly large storage area down at my shop and could contact a local cabinet builder to see how much they would charge just to cut 50 or 100 boxes. I could keep all the stuff at my shop and package/ship it out as needed.

I'm not sure how much the price would be, and it would only be fair to include a fee to the smart guy that designed the box as well. But it should still be fairly reasonable after all is said and done.

I'd think this box could be shipped easy, not just as a flat pack, but also a completed enclosure as another option.

What do you guys think?
You mentioned measurments, but I can't seem to find them. Could you point me in the right direction? Is it a 25hz -3db or -6db? Is that in-room or measured at the mouth?

Very cool looking build. A couple of those might be nice for a bedroom build.

I think I'd be worried about possible legal issues of such a venture - you might want to check in with Danley Sound Labs about that idea.
Somebody point me to where Danley has proprietary rights to generic tapped horns, please.
