21" Maelstrom Curved Box Build - Page 24

Was this to be true carbon fiber, or the vinyl applique that appears as the true product?

My guess is true carbon fiber. You don't do a build like this to buy cheap vinyl...it would be like finishing off a hot rod with hub caps...

Yes, it was going to be a true carbon fibre finish. You can get anyone to do the vinyl stuff; finding someone who can do actual carbon fibre isn't as easy.

Why not have one made in fiber glass and custom painted? Gloss black would look great!

Well, that might be an idea. I'm back to square one so anything is on the table. Although the enclosure doesn't look '"wrong" as it sits now without a face plate. I've never worked with fibre glass though so I would have to get someone else to do it.

Carbon fiber and fiberglass both work along the same lines. Both are a cloth that is stiffened by resin. If you can find someone that does fiberglass well, they can most likely do carbon fiber. It's just a matter of getting the materials

corock, I've been following your thread since day one (posted a few times lol) and have been amazed at the time and detail you put into this build.

I remember how you lost contact with the guy you were having the "secret" faceplate done by.

I know you sent him the actual plate. But just out of curiousity, how long did it take you to make it?

I mess around with carbon fiber for my cars a little. I cant make a solid peice that would be show quality but could cover a plate. I've got a ton of different weaves on rolls laying around here and would be willing to help you get the end result that you wanted. I'll be completely honest and tell you that it wont be any time soon as I've got a huge project going but I could deff do it for you for pretty much nothing other than costs of shipping and a few yards of fiber, resin, and paper. Only because this is the best DIY sub build ever if you ask me. Just the pile of scraps had me amazed when this started. It would be a project that would be on both our back burners, you making another plate and me getting to it when I can.

Just an option. I could also give you the names of some companies that could make it show quality if they would do it. They normally do car stuff but possibly could do it as well. They hang around on nagtroc.com nissan gtr car forum where I visit quite regularly.

Thank you for the offer.

Just like the enclosure, I didn't keep track of the hours, but it was A LOT of work. It wasn't nearly as much fun either. I will probably end up building another face plate, but its definately a winter project. And I'm in the process of building a dedicated HT too, so it will have to wait until I'm done that.

Before anyone asks, the HT will not be an aesthetic project like the sub. Its going to be simple and functional with the focus and money going towards the equipment rather than the looks.

I don't mean to hijack, but is the maelstrom-x 21 still available for purchase?

If you do build a new faceplate you should look into Hydro Graphics.....They can do some cool stuff with it....Here are a couple of links....

Pretty cool of you right there audio....

Wow! Sorry to revive a 2 year old thread, but I would love to see the faceplate you ended up with.

I haven't gotten to it yet, lol. After a year of building the sub I spent another year building my home theater. Now for the past year I've just been enjoying the fruits of my labour. I'm thinking about getting back to the subs face plate but nothing planned yet.

Also, I ended up with an SVS PB-13 Ultra driver with no box....what to do? I'm starting to think up some crazy enclosure for it.

You don't have that bad boy m-21 in the theater? I know the two subs you have in there probably sound great but I would think adding the M-21 to them would really be something!

The 21" is in a sealed box and performs very well with music, but doesn't have the ability to dig down deep for movie LFE. So the 21 DIY sub resides in my living room with my system that is primarily music. The two ported SVS PB-13 Ultras in the HT do a much better job getting down to 20hz and below for movies.
Lets me start with...This thread got me back into audio...

But, I have to say that I'm surprised it doesn't dig deep enough for HT? I'd love to see measurements

Let me also say that I now have two of these drivers, and they dig pretty deep. I am only running ~300 watts to each driver, but my enclosures are about 15 cu. ft. each.

Is it EQd or simply run with the native sealed response?
Good point A9X, I am thinking native response because I know my sealed Mael-X 21" digs DEEP with some boost down low.
I was thinking the same thing, so I modeled his build. A Mael 21 in 7cu ft with 1600 watts still does 100 db @ 10 hz...with no room gain and no EQ. Ricci measured the SVS (15hz setup) at 89.3db @ 12.5 hz. Two of those still lose to the 21.

I added 24db's of boost below 20hz to my 21's (if I recall correctly), and the difference was MASSIVE.
I have just over ~4000 "clone" watts going to the pair.

That seems to make it give linear excursion to ~6hz; obviously with that much ULF-gain you have to be careful not to bottom it out on unknown signals of course.

I'm pretty certain it could best a tiny SVS 13 incher biggrin.gif
post #720 of 732
24db's of boost. Holy crap. eek.gif
