My Ultra 10 arrived.
Here are my first thoughts (capsule review).
It was both lighter and smaller than expected.
It came with the power cable, and spikes and rubber feet. I usually use the rubber feet on speakers so I can move them easily. I seem to need to move stuff a lot.
I turned off the crossover (nice feature,) set the phase to 0, and the volume half-way. I manually calibrated the new sub to 73 dB using the receiver's test tones (the L/R speakers were at 73 dB at 0 on the volume.)
I ran some tests on my old sub. A Quake from Audio Concepts. It's a dual 8" sub with a 100 watt amp.
Using some basic sweeps -
120 95 dB
60 89 dB
27 0 (out of range, so lower than 81)
I reran auto setup, so these figures are different than I first posted.
20 Out of range
The new sub seems better. I would call it's -3 dB frequency about 26hz. Usable bass is lower as seen above.
I am not sure about SPL levels. I don't know how to evaluate max SPL, nor do I think that is prudent seeing how I live in an apartment. I can only judge it based on movies and music.
I fired up Star Wars (Episode IV,) and all seemed pretty good. I played the scene where the Falcon came out of hyper near what was Alderaan. There's some nice bass there, and it sounded really clean.
I played a bass heavy song ("C in China", a song you likely never heard.) And it also sounded good.
I played Cranberries No Need to Argue. Which I don't care for, but it has pipe organ notes. Which also sounded very clean.
I heard Kung Fu Panda's final fight scene was a good test. So I put that into the PS3, and started it up. This also sounds good. The bass sounds controlled and clean. If you have any favorite scenes from common action movies, I would be willing to test them. Note that during these tests, I am running my volume at about -10 dB, approx. 10 dB below reference level.
This seems to surpass my old sub. It plays deeper, it's smaller. As I said, max unclipped SPL is not known. But I currently see no reason to doubt that it's sufficient for my needs.
So far, and given the sub's sale price, this is one of the best AV deals I ever encountered. So far, I think this is a great sub for someone like me in an apartment with limited room.
