PowerDVD 10 to support 2D to 3D Conversion

I just got an email from Cyberlink in which they tout a new feature of PowerDVD 10 - the ability to convert 2D content to 3D. This video details how you go about enabling the feature from within the software. It reminds me of the menu for doing the same thing on the Samsung C7000 3D display. The PowerDVD software supports new Full HD 3D displays, as well as 3D displays that use nVidia's glasses.

This feature, I believe, will not become available until summer, when 3D is officially supported in PowerDVD 10. This support makes not having the feature in the Panasonic plasma displays less of a drawback for those of us who use HTPCs. Personally, I don't much care for the feature, except as a novelty. It is nice to know it will be there, although we won't know how well it works for a few more months. My guess is that it will be comparable to the Samsung's conversion, especially if the software leverages the power of the video card's GPU. There's some awesome video processing capability in modern cards.

Anton from 3D-Vision Blog tested out the 2D-to-3D conversion of PDVD 10, as it currently allows conversion for DVDs, other media will be included in the update this summer.

He wasn't impressed with the results:

You know, it's not a feature I'd pay for in any device, but since I plan on doing 3D from a HTPC, the conversion will be essentially free when I upgrade to PowerDVD 10. Let's hope the final software is a little better than what he reviewed. Other developments with 3D on the computer could be much more exciting. Within a year, I expect to be watching lots of things in 3D on the computer, from 3D Blu-ray discs to 3D still photos.
