XB360 Horizontal vs Veritcal Poll

SO here's the plan, vote on how YOU HAVE YOUR XBOX ORIENTED.

Do you stand it up like a tower or lay it down like AV equipment?

No explanation needed but if you have link with temperature tests or a side by side comparison that'd be nice to have.

Background:
I purchased my first xbox in December and did a little searching for the MW2 bundle since it was a good deal (game, 2 controllers, 250gb hd, nifty design not just faceplate for $400). The gamer chick said to always lay it down, it will void your warranty if you don't. I call BS for one big fat reason, there are feet to stand it up vertically. So I figured I'd ask those who have had xboxes longer and had them live/die/catch fire etc. I'm not having any problems with mine (other than it being a bit louder than I'd like) just curious.

Doesn't matter which way you put it, it's meant to do both. And if it's gonna die, it's gonna die...there's no avoiding it.

p.s. My first 360 lasted 2.5 years horizontally

A previous roommate of mine had a launch day console that just recently died. I think it's some sort of record. He kept it all which ways and was messy as hell but he had it on wooden surfaces on the floor and away from most things so it was getting proper ventilation by a long shot. That probably saved him.

I'm just trying to see how the gurus have theirs

If it means anything, I had mine in a well ventilated area and never moved the thing...I mean never. Even dusted it occassionally.........and it still died.

I don't think it much matters on which way it's oriented but mine is horizontal.
I prefer to keep it horizontal - one, it looks better with my setup, as everything is horizontal.

2, I'm not covering up a large vent chamber by placing it on it's side.

I keep it Horizontal, on top of an old PS2 vertical stand that keeps it elevated for better cooling. I've had some experience with vertical standing causing the discs to get scratched easier.

EDIT: I suppose if you really wanted to be anal, you could do some simple tests of running the thing for an hour or two in each position, and check the surface temperatures with an IR gun or thermocouple in several locations and see which position keeps the console cooler. But, ya know, you could just play games instead.

I currently keep it vertical but that's just so it takes up less space on my desk.

I keep mine at a 45 degree angle.

I used to have it on a spit-like device that would just rotate it around and around, but every 5 seconds the wires would get wound up and it was a mess.

I periodically sacrifice goats in front of it, and thus far have avoided the RROD.
Obviously goat sacrifice has more to do with avoiding the RROD than the position does, since I have yet to hear of anyone who sacrifices goats to it and has had it die, yet there are horizontal and vertical people who have had theirs die. Goat Sacrifice FTW.

I sacfrice dollar bills to mine every time I play which is very impressive since here in Canada we use dollar coins.

I've had mine standing up and lying down. Whatever works for the AV set up of the time.

If you keep it vertical, make sure there's zero chance of knocking it over. I usually keeps mine horizontal, but at last murphy's law prevail one time I place it vertically and knock it over while the drive was reading the game...one scratched GTA4 disc.

Do the Goats have to be a special breed? For instance the larger ones raised for cheese up here in New England? Or perhaps the smaller variety popular in Miami for it's meat?

I've always just used the youngest I can find. The important part is that none of it goes to waste. Eat what you can, and throw the rest at kindergartners as they get off the bus. Make sure it's as they get off the bus....if you do it as they're getting on, they start crying and miss school, and education is important.

All I know is periodic goat sacrifices have kept me RROD free for 3 years now.

I have one going each way, so I voted who cares

I thought there'd be more vertical... I'm kind of surprised.

Any particular reason why you'd think that?

1 vertical
2 horizontal

whichever way it fits better in that room

Horizontal with empty Canon ink-jet cartridges under each foot to give it more room to pull air from the bottom, and with plenty of room to the right side (as you look at it straight on) to pull air through the main intake on that side.

You do realize the motherboard covers the whole bottom so under the curve airflow won't do too much....

Question: Are these virgin goats? I have had two RRoDs so I must have been using some slutty goats.

I kept my super quiet Elite horizontal in an AV cabinet squeezed into a tight shelf with glass front doors and an open back for two years. It finally RROD and I sent it off for the free repair and they sent me back a different console that was super noisy. Loading the games to the HD helped a lot to get it back to normal.

Didn't realize that. Maybe the extra elevation will help the side suck in more air...
i have mine horizontal sitting on a laptop cooling pad, i dont use the cooling pad at all, other than for elevation.

back in 05 or 06 i had it running vertically, it scratched 2 discs so i've only run horizontal since... this was on a hitachi jet turbine drive, not sure if newer drives are improved.
You get less air restriction horizontally even though they made it to do both. I have mine horizontally cuz I am just not comfortable with the DVD in the vertical position spinning in just a tray.
I had the original PS2 in a vertical position and that sucker scratched a brand new game. I've never had a console in a vertical position since. I've had 4 360's including a launch and never had a single issue with any of them.
I have had one RROD on an 'altered' 360. I have heard horizontal is best from the beginning so thats what I am sticking with. But I know for a fact NEVER EVER move the 360 while it is on. I had a friend knock it over from vertical position....instant red ring. And i know for a fact the old xboxs could be thrown off the roof then start up a Hang 'em High CTF halo 1 game right away.

It's funny how microsoft went from the orginal tank to the modern daisy.
Elite horizontal, Arcade vertical.
It doesn't matter which way you set it up. The pads under the processor chips that overheat causing the RROD suck. they are the cause of the problem. Intercoolers help a lot, but ultimately, you need some sort of heatsink instead of a piece of foam. I just fixed one yesterday with RROD, intial releas model. Replaced the pads with copper heatsinks wrapped in tape to insulate. Worked perfectly. Red lights went out instantly.

1 horizontal (Component stand in living room)
3 vertical (Son, daughter and Obutto)
