Media PC with separate storage

Thread Starter
Ok after a few months still trying to figure everything out I want to get to build a Media PC, my regular computer crapped out on me and had to go and build a new one 1st.

CPU - i3 530
MB - Really not important right now I can pick it out
RAM - " "
PSU - " "
GPU - Looking at a MB with iGPU so don't need to worry about it right now (would I need a GPU if I plan to upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1)
HDD - looking at getting a 30 GB SSD for my OS (storage drive don't matter right now)
Case - Something like a Receiver I can pick it out
BD-ROM - I'll pick it out.

My main problem is the storage. I want to keep my Media away from the main case and have it in it's own. I need something to start that can hold 8 HDD and be able to add in 4 more HDD soon if not more .

I was looking at something like this LINKY not sure if there any good or if this is the best way to do something like I want. I rather it run through the network so I can transfer to the Storage but if not it's not a deal breaker right now.

Raid and transfer speed is not a problem. I'm just going to Plug and Play each drive on it's own and I'm making a full backup of that drive just in case it fails then rather deal with a RAID system unless it's really worth going with a RAID 5 or setup or something.

Or am I over thing the building and should I just get a Rackmount Server Case or Full Tower Case and call it done.

If I get the Server Case/ Tower I would need a Bigger MB with more PCI-e slots and will prob loose my iGPU than but will the i3 rig be enough to push all this.

One could just keep it simple and use something like the Samsung Story Station external hard drives (USB 2.0 available now, eSATA versions coming in theory). Should be able to add an unlimited amount with the right hub(s)/adapter card(s). Just the initial 2TB should hold quite a bit though.

I have the Thecus N5200. Although it's not officially supported I have 2TB drives in the system and it works just fine.
