The Beach House Bar Build! Hooray! - Page 5

??? I dont understand why I would cover my nice bar top with MDF? shouldnt the MDF go on the bottom of the two "lips"?

The picture was just to show that I do have both side peices cut, that is what it will look like. That does not include any support peices or how it will mount.

Does that make sense or am I crazy?

You are crazy! But so am I, so you are in good company...

I think you need to post a picture of a mock-up with the supporting pieces underneath the bar. Clamp the support pieces into location with the rail resting on top of it and take a picture from the side. Then people should be able to see what you are planning.

Or you could just draw a picture on a napkin and post a picture of that...

HA ^ I like the napkins idea. I actually did have it mocked up but didnt take a picture when I did. I will take the sample peices and clamp it down tonight and post it.

Yes mdf on the bottom or whatever. The point I was trying to make was simply that you need 2 layers of 3/4" material to properly rest that rail on or it will snap off. I would take the bar top off and cut a sheet of 3/4" ply larger than your top and attach it to the base of the bar then attach the current top back on top of the new layer and you will then have a "staggered" top that will support the rail the proper way.

This a picture of m bar top early in my build. I hope this helps.

thanks for the help steve. I see where you are coming from. The reason I am doing it this way is because I do not want the top of my bar any higher than it is.

When I started the build, I didnt know how the rail needed to be mounted (I also had not found this wonderful forum).

With that said, I decided to forgo mounting the bar top any higher than it is right now. So I came up with another way. and here it is. Hope this helps

Only two more supports to mount, tomorrow!

I am definetly a horse of a different color right! besides, it will work. and if it doesnt, I wont admit it or tell anyone here!

Well... I dont know what to make of this. I fully assumed to log on and find an onslot of "OMG that will never work" and "what are you thinking that is a horrible idea" and "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES ITS GOING TO FALL"!!

So one of two things has happened:

1. You guys have seen the error of your ways and now understand how smart I am, so your keeping quiet.

or

2. You guys now understand how smart I am and arent bothering to help me anymore!!

I am guessing the latter of the two.

Or (3) I was busy packing up and sending you this inspirational poster I've had above my workbench for some time, as I think you've earned it ...

But forget the bar rail - I'm especially impressed with your efficient placement of critical facilities in close proximity to the bar, as evident from a close look at what is in the background of this photo:

Keen observation! Here's a picture from my daughter's daycare. Maybe you could incorporate something like this into your bar seating plan:

I was actually planning on mentioning that in the last post. but as it was late, I forgot.

Since that was already brought up, does anyone know where I could find a cheap urinal? Seriuosly! I really want one. On that note, does anyone know how to install said urinal?

Thanks for the motivational poster Sir Hanes. Do I need to send you my address, and should I expect it UPS or FedEx? Cant wait!

Let us see, the post that shows your design are (finally) posted at 10:18PM EST on Wednesday, then you wonder why no one has commented the next day at 8:07AM EST.

Beach, haven't you ever heard of this wonderful thing called SLEEP?!?

BeerParty, haven't YOU ever heard of a wonderful thing called AMP!! ITS GREAT, YOU CAN STAY UP FOR DAYS WITH NO SIDE EFFECTS!! AHHHHH!

Yes, the peice of wood that the rail is resting on will go all the way to front side of the bar. (if that makes since) I will probably have more supports right above that wood. (directly behind the supports I am currently glueing down. make sense?!

I think what he is saying is that your idea is sound, but the support under the bar top needs to go the ENTIRE length not just every eight to 10 inches. Just my .02 you need to glue and SCREW the wood to the underside so you have two methods of attachment.

Great idea for a urinal, just make sure you find a good smelling urinal cake!

RTROSE

Sorry. I understand now. I am a little slow. Yes, the bottom board will be one solid peice running from side to side and all the way back.

(mental note, get good smelling cakes. got it!)

Sounds like you have a good plan. While the bottom of the bar isn't visible, you should still put a finish on the plywood after you install it to keep it from warping, I'd hate to see all your hard work get messed up by warping wood.

Make sure you take some pictures along the way so you can show of to those of use that don't use AMP.

Progress will be slow (er than normal) for the next few weeks, if any. I am starting the preperations for The Indianapolis 500. Lots to do.

I have a special set of cornhole boards to finish making. I will have the IRL logo on one and the gold wheel and wings w/ flags logo on the other. The logos are hand painted, so it takes a while to get it done right. If anyone is interested in pictures, I can post them as I go.

Then we have the planning of the actual day. Who is going with us, who is driving there, who is driving back, who's cars are we driving, what time will we all wake up, what time we will leave (which by the way is 4:30 in the A.M.) for the track, and the ever important question, how many cases of beer should be bring?

Gonna be a big day!!!

But other than that the thread will be pretty slow going.

You can still ask questions, I will be checking the site all the time. (addiction) Just wont have any picture of the bar progress, as usual.

Have fun with all the family planning. I just built some cornhole boards last summer. I ended up going the easy route and put decals on them then used poly to coat them and make them smooth. Worked out good.

This was my helper this weekend. The sun was out and not a bad way to spend the day out of the garage where all the saw dust was flying.

A few weeks ... just to get ready to go watch people drive cars around in circles?!

It's a relief to find someone who can even make me and my so-called build look fast! Thanks!

P.S. I know I'm probably going to regret asking this, but what the heck is a "cornhole board?"

Who said anything about family!? This is drunkfest 2010. It will just be me and about 200,000 of my closest friends!
Besides, the wife hates the race and my son is only 7 months so he still has about 20yrs to go.

Looks like you had beter weather than we did this weekend.

I would like everyone to refrain from responding to this comment until tonight. I know, its hard not to make fun of people when given the chance, but just hold out til tonight.

I will post pictures of my boards tonight. 'Til then hanes, just think; Horseshoes, but instead of a dirt pit, pole and shoes; you have a board, hole, and bean bags (or corn bags for those of you paying attention)

As promised, this is the first set of boards I built last year for the race.

boards before being painted

Gold Wheel and Wings with Flags

Centinnial Logo (sorry about the bad glare)

the set together

After the race, I sold these boards and made another set for the same guy that bought this one. But he never paid me the rest of the money, so I kept those. It was a set of Colts/Bears. But I cant seem to find a picture of those right now.

I made a third set for a friends dad that likes the IRL

The mate to that was another gold wheel and wings with flags.

I am currently finishing another race set and a set of Butler Bulldogs, they are going to look sharp!!

Thanks for looking and I hope that help out the old timers like hanes with a visual aid!
Those look great. I can't believe you painted the logos on. I cheaped out and went with some decals that I poly coated over to make them smooth.
Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa State Cyclones

Not the best pictures. Didn't feel like taking them off the wall where they are hanging.
OK, so I guess you set me straight on what a cornhole board is.

But ... well, why?

Why ask why? It is a perfect excuse to drink beer, compete and enjoy the weather. Plus, it doesn't require the stakes like horseshoes, it only requires 1 hand to play (the other is used to hold your beer) and, well, do you need another reason?
Cornhole is the best game ever!! It must be a Hoosier thing so I wouldnt expect Hanes to understand it but give him a beer an he may be willing to try!

Only the true fans have these boards.
Let me know when you are ready to play with the big dogs!
I will make you a great set for a great price!

As tempting as it is, I wouldn't want to have to play with the "big dogs" and take your money so you couldn't get that sweet bar done. You might need the cash to take some dry wall lessons

Okay.... I've held back long enough...I know you are from Indyhoozierland, but what the heck are you thinking with that bar rail? I mean, if you like it, ignore what I'm about to say. But....it's nearly at a 30-35 degree angle? How comfortable is that? If you want it to be a boob rest, well okay. I spend a lot of time on my rail (my breasesssts are small)...and it's prolly 20 degrees at most and I think that is pushing it. Have you spent any time leaning on that for an evening of watching Hockey or Baseball or Basketball?

I don't mean to sound harsh, really I don't. I'm just trying to point out the issues you may find after you install it. It's hard enough not sliding off a flat bar when you have had a Coke or two let alone a rail that is angled like that.... I won't even mention your mounting application.

Please don't take this as an insult, I don't mean it that way.

Finally, Cornhole is just wrong no matter how you say it... And I'm from Ohio and they do the CornHole thingy...but I didn't, okay? Nothing wrong with it, but I'm just sayin'....

+1

Randy is dead on here, the angle of the rail is all wrong. We are simply suggesting this as two fellow bar build/bar owners who have sat and rested our arms, elbows and breasts on said rail. We are here to help you avoid making an install mistake that you may regret after the fact. Trust me on this.....Randy is here to help, he helped me ALOT on my bar build.....well except for physically....he NEVER showed up to help. Bottom line trust him (us) on this one that angle is oh so wrong.

On the cornhole note you my friend are WRONG!! Cornhole is a GREAT game with a couple of buddies and a few cold ones, now the name of the game is a whole nother story
