HDMI 1.5: What Do You Think It Will Do?

OK,

The Bland's HDMI 1.1 SSO is obsolete.

My Theta CB3 is older obsolete than that, and IF the HDMI upgrade comes
it is "only" obsolete.

HDMI 1.4 with Ethernet and 3D is now "in". Just starting to trickle out?

What's next in say two years? HDMI 1.5? Will this be the next step, from HDMI 1.1/1.3 flat screen 2D, to HDMI 1.4 flat screen 3D, to HDMI 1.5 Holographic 3D in your room not on the screen?
1.5 will still be trying to get 3D to work and look right.
Brightness, Resolution ect...

HDMI 1.6 will the white flag, with 4000p around the corner.
HDMI 1.5 will fix 2 errors/flaws in the design of 1.4 but will not be backward compatible, forcing everybody to buy new gear. Sadly, 1.5 will have a flaw that HDMI 1.6 will fix - or at least that is what we will be told but it will really be about putting a new copy protection scheme out there. HDMI 1.6 with HDCP 2.0 will be released and forced on us at the cost of millions to develop and billions to eventually deploy, but a 14 year old girl in Romania will crack it less than a week on a $199 netbook and post it on the Internet. Although this crack will make it completely trivial to circumvent the new copy protection, we will all be forced to upgrade anyway because they will force download a new encryption formula each week on Friday and it will be cracked by the following Monday.

Hollyweird will keep this up until they figure out they can watermark films on the fly and will embed a serial code in each download they stream or sell so that when a pirated copy comes up, they can march straight to your door and drag you off to court.

Or maybe I am just cynical and paranoid...

Perhaps it will also transport AC power?
HDMI 1.5 will require all your equipment connected to it to be EnergyStar certified for low power consumption otherwise, it will downgrade your signal to 2d 480i Pro-Logic but still have Macrovision when converted to analog.

Let's just bring a little Proposition 65 disclaimer into the mix.

WARNING: HDMI Interconnects contain HDCP, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

How about . . . . there is no HDMI 1.5:

Intel Provides Sneak Peek On Future Tech

Quote:

Among the first devices expected to work their way into the consumer electronics space is Light Peak. Light Peak is an optical-based input/output interface first introduced last year at Intel's developer's forum and shown again at International CES by Intel CEO Paul Otellini. It is designed to replace USB, HDMI and a host of other connectivity technologies, said Jeff Demain, an Intel Labs researcher.

HEY I HAVE AN IDEA!!!!!!

How about HDMI 1.5:

A VERSION OF HDMI THAT ACTUALLY F**KING WORKS!!!!

Or better yet:

HDMI 1.5: HD-SDI

wrapping an HDMI 1.4 cable with aluminum or tin foil will make it HDMI 1.5 compliant

using copper foil will yield speeds of HDMI 1.6

try it
4K & 3D capable on the video side and 9.2 discrete channel support I guess.

It will force new purchases to start the merry go round again. At a certain point sales will dry up really badly as people get fed up of the continuous changes.

Speaking about wrapping... Are those crazy videos by the Swede that wraps everything in foil and ESR paper and dissects Nordost cables still available somewhere?

sure: he is the source of this information

He will post a video of his demonstration of wrapping HDMI cables here soon: stay tuned

Peter,

ValhallaPC has not been back since 12/2008 under that screen name. He was one of the more interesting posters on AVS for lack of a better term.

HDMI 1.5 will be 4-D. You will have box above your TV that will shoot out bubbles, water, smoke and glitter. You will also have the option oh adding a device to your seat that will poke you in the back. I have actually seen 4-D and it is the future.
What do I think it will do? Give idiot BestBuy employees excuses for poorly conceived sales pitches for buying overpriced cables.
A key part of this new standard will include a new HDMI trademark and licensed connector. This new connector will make a very poor electrical connection, will be very prone to breaking, and will be designed to maximize the possibility of it slipping out. These benefits will more than make up for additional cost charged for each licensee.

In addition to the improved HDCP encryption, if any device in your chain is powered off in the wrong order, or just flaks out, all HDMI equipment in your home must be turned off for 120 seconds AND upon restart you will have to connect to the internet to validate with the HDMI license servers that you haven't tampered in any unapproved fashion.
At the same time that the validation process is performed additional "exciting content" (read as unskippable ADs and trailers) will be downloaded to your devices and you _will_ have to watch them before your equipment will respond.

We will see a very exciting set of TV ads and marketing material (and logos) for this new HDMI(tm) spec. Tech websites will be sent PR kits that they will post them verbatim as exciting new news.

I already have the 4th D - had it for over 7 years and it runs on a Kinelink cable.

HDMI 1.5 cables will require HDMI 1.4 cables made by ValhallaPC who adds a silver coating to the cable! And they will be certified by an infamous "person" abbreviated as DW as not sounding or looking or working any better. Nonetheless, ValhallaPC becomes the next Bill Gates and laughs all the way to the bank. Objectivists are then banned from the internet and AV "Science" forums becomes AV "Seance" forums!

That would be fantastic!
When do you think we can expect it?

Think I'm already there at v1.3.

The next will not be from Intel or HDMI. It will be RUM. (Read Users Mind).

ValhallaPC has done this and moved on to ERS paper, HDMI1.7...

I didn't think it would take so long to make, minutes turned into hours, hours turned into days. After 12 hours I already started hallucinating, it felt like someone was in my room looking at me. I didn't want to spend the time drinking water because I wanted to finish the cable. I didn't want any toilet breaks either. After a while my vision started getting blurry but since I'm no quitter, I just kept on going to the end. At one point it felt like I was baking rollcake.

It was the first and probably the last time I ever make a cable with 3 layers of ERS. The ERS Paper around my 1m Valhalla power cord costs almost a grand.

I used a dozen toilet paper rolls, cotton thread, packing tape, packing foam, dozens of sheets of ERS Paper.
All the layers of ERS Paper are separated with 1cm, because less than 1cm makes it sound muddy.

At this point in time either that solution or this one

http://www.pcworld.com/article/20030...et_cables.html

will do ; but Ime pessimistic with such an entrenched [I was going to say standard ] but thats a bit rich
post #26 of 35
only think i hope for the next wire is it will be backwards compatible... i dont wanna see.. all our hdmi products go to waste

Since 4D requires time travel to implement that should read "I have 4D and have seen the future".

HDMI 1.5 will support Smell-O-Vision, Sensurround and a Voice Of God channel with support for at least 24 channels. It will also provide support for 2-way Kinect.

These additions will be sponsored by the XXX industry for their obvious use in that genre.

[edit] I forgot it will also support Cinerama and the use of three projectors.

[edit 2] oh and UHDTV
u know.... on a serious note... I cant imagine needing much more then whats in UHDTV and HEVC.. 8K 4:4:4 12 bit/color at high frame rates really should exceed about anyones vision even sitting 6" from a 10 foot screen and 22.2 channels of uncompressed audio should cover it.

I think if I were making a standard I would use HEVC as a standard and develop a interface and connection standard around it. That way the standard is fairly future proof..

HEVC is a proposed standard. Lets just get that supported with a interconnection/streaming delievery method and we should be good for a while... 8K is pretty good..

Oh yea.. Content Protection.. Ummmmmmm is it safe to say that its impossible to protect content for very long ? Yea I guess it is a mathematical certainty that with time all encryption will be broken. Its like the "War On Drugs", its had ZERO effect. With a short number of searches anyone can find a movie released in theaters on the same day its released. Content protection is just like the war on drugs. Its a huge waste of money with zero effect.. You know, I dont download anything. I like owning the disc. A lot of people like owning the disc.

I would like to see a 1.4d addition: Dual-link HDMI using two ports.

Some PC Games look very cool with 1080p24 3D but they are practically unplayable with 24fps (at least it hurts my eyes, even with RPG, not to mention FPS games...), 720p60 3D is smooth (very noticeable if you just switched from 1080p24) but looks worse than 1080p60 2D.

1080p60(50) 3D could be very nice. May be I would consider it to use glasses for games which look nice in 3D.

If we consider that nobody wants a new cable which is not backward compatible than may be we should use two cables at once to achieve 1080p60 3D (or at least 1080p50 3D if they resist to keep the max TDMS clock below ~250Mhz)

And I suspect it could be possible with some existing 1.4 hardwares through a firmware update (which will never happen).
