Samsung BD-C6500 with RX-V861 - DTS MA & Dolby TrueHD

Howdy all,

I'm just making the transition from my 32" JVC CRT and Yamaha RX-490 Dolby surround into the High Def era.

I have:

Display: Samsung PN50B560
Blu-ray: Samsung BD-C6500
Sound: Definitive Technologies Procinema 800 (6.1)
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V861 (potentially)

Forgive my noobness.

I want the best sound, and I know that the RX-v861 DOES NOT decode DTS MA or Dolby TrueHD.

How do I get these new surround modes to play?

I thought I read in another post about being able to still use an HDMI cable from the C6500 to the V861, letting the C6500 do the decoding?

Or do I have to use the analog outs from the C6500? If so, the V861 seems to only have 6 inputs for external sources?

Or am I better off selling the V861 and getting something else?

Sorry if I am asking dumb questions, this is my first foray with surround sound in 15 years.

The spec sheet on Yamaha's website says its got 7.1 inputs. So you could use the analog outs on the C6500. The other option is if the V861 can accept a loss less pcm signal then then you can have the C6500 do the decoding and send PCM over HDMI to your reciever. Not 100% sure on this second option, just regurgitating what I've read on the forums elsewhere. Maybe try searching with some terms like "lossless over hdmi"?

Thanks Dave.

That's what I'm trying to determine.

Am I better of with analog 7.1 to 861?

Or with linear PCM over HDMI to the 861? <--- I don't know if this is possible and I am trying to determine if it is.

Either way will work with that equipment combination.

HDMI is generally better because it allows you to use the processing tools in the receiver for tasks such as bass management and EQ, which tend to be better than the tools in the player. Digital also allows you to apply DSPs in the AVR to matrix sound for your rear speaker. Most movies have 5.1 soundtracks and the player can't produce a rear channel with 5.1 movies.

Besides, HDMI is one cable instead of seven and a good deal easier to set up.

The 861 is an HDMI 1.2 compliant AVR so it can accept a 5.1 or 7.1 multi-channel PCM, but note the 861 only has 2 HDMI inputs and is an older model. The downside of using the 5.1/7.1 analog inputs is that you would have no bass management within the AVR or Room EQ (YPAO)..

HDMI is the way to go for you. Let the player decode the lossless formats and send them as PCM over the HDMI cable to the receiver. If you do need more HDMI inputs, a simple HDMI switch can be used on one of the receiver's HDMI inputs. I'd keep the 861, if I had one. It's got much better amps in it than newer equivalent receivers.

I had the V861 before, it does accept 7.1 PCM over HDMI (in my case, from my PS3 through HDMI to the V861) and can apply the Yamaha wonderful DSP to the PCM signal and the scene mode is definitely a WAF friendly features (which they included in the higher end RX-V2065 (the RX-V1900 replacement) model)

The V861 is a wonderful AVR compared to the newer V1065, I changed it because I wanted the HD-Audio decoding AVR and more HDMI input, it does not have any HDMI issue like my current Marantz Sr6003.

My wife actually prefer the V861 over to the current SR6300

Thanks to all for your valuable input.

I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the new sound formats, but you have all put my fears to rest.

I had heard that the 861 has a very good amp section, so it is nice to know I do not need to get a newer AVR.

Plus, I got if for a steal...
