Has anyone else given up on Monoprice?

Thread Starter
As many of you know, their site was recently hacked and their credit cards stolen.

I just found out from Capital One that mine was one of those cards and am in the process of disputing the fraudulent charges and getting a new card.

This is the first time this has happened to me and as much as I liked monoprice, I frankly think it's unacceptable. Companies should take every measure to safeguard customer information. Thankfully, I can change my credit card, but I can only assume that criminals also have my name, address, and phone number.

Has anyone else been compromised and will you continue to do business with monoprice?

Now now, this really has nothing to do with LCD Flat Panel discussion.

But, anyway, I'm sure Monoprice DID take measures to prevent the theft of customer information. It just so happened the measures weren't enough. This type of thing happens now and then, with small and big companies. It's the risk you take when you order things online. Heck, sometimes customer information gets stolen from brick and mortar (offline) stores too. (Just recently, for example, some laptop computers got stolen from a hospital nearby which had transactions for the past 2 or 3 years on them, so now the hospital had to send out letters to everybody and offer free identity theft protection for a year...)

I don't think this is any reason to stop doing business with Monoprice. I'm sure they've since increased their security.

I'm not really that worried about someone getting my personal information as much as getting my financial information. But that's why I only shop online with credit cards that offer fraud protection. If I see any charges I don't make, I just make a call, get them reversed, get a new card. It doesn't bother me that much. What's someone going to do with my address anyway? Fly over and say hi? They're welcome anytime. We'll watch a movie together, after they wake up from me punching them out for hacking. Haha.

Although it hasn't happened to me, it does happen. I think one measure of the character of a company is how they react when something like that does happen. Monoprice stopped taking orders and effectively shut down their site for nearly 2 weeks in order to get to the bottom of what exactly happened. They shut down their site despite the fact that they would lose countless sales.

I happen to know for a fact that many (if not most) companies try to hide any breach from the public. The fact that Monoprice dealt with the manner in a transparent way shows me that they genuinely care about their customers and take the security of their information seriously. Adding to that the fact that they have had exemplary service on the more than dozen orders that I have placed with them, I have to say that I trust them as much as I trust any other online retailer.

Yeah I'll continue to use them; just use PayPal to pay instead of direct CC. Then you're good (well unless PayPal ever gets hacked, lol).

Same here, I'm glad they have a paypal option.

If I need cables in the future, I'll still order from them. Thanks for posting- if I hadn't seen your post, I wouldn't have checked into it and found unauthorized charges on my card, and have gotten the ball rolling on investigating further. Curiously, they seem like random purchases, so far not high $$$.

This is stupid. Did you care when Heartland got hacked? Are you going to now not shop with the 175,000 unnamed merchants that got hit? Oh wait you cant because they didn't say who it hit. At least monoprice let us know.

Monoprice did the right thing once they found out. If anything you are even safer now ordering with them. I just ordered 2 mounts and cables from them last week with the CC. I wont give up on them.

It's not stupid, it makes sense.......... If you had your credit card hacked and used in a felonious manner, it would make anyone second guess the merchant site used. Unfortunately, in this day and age it happens, and not just to Monoprice. I have used Monoprice many times and their prices are just sooo good, it's easier to forgive than other websites......just not all. I respect those like the orginal poster, that wouldn't shop there, but this is a sign of things to come I'm afraid..........you take your chances when you go online to buy things. I think the good services/prices they provide far outweigh the negatives.

This thread does need to get moved however.........lol. We need a "I Got Screwed Online" forum, just to have people be able to vent........I understand though.

^ Agree 100%

An unfortunate fact of life: If you use a card anywhere, anytime, there is the possibility your card number will be hacked. Most card issuers have 'zero liability' policies that will prevent you from losing any money. About all you can do is get a new card issued, and move on.

If Heartland can be hacked, so can Paypal.
  • Breaking into the files of Heartland Payment Systems, the world's ninth largest credit processing company, and stealing more than 130 million credit and debit card numbers
  • RBS Worldpay, a subsidiary of Citizens Financial Group Inc., said a breach of its payment systems may have affected more than 1.5 million people.
  • Hannaford Brothers Co....compromised at least 4.2 million credit and debit card accounts.
  • TJX Companies Inc., the parent of retailers Marshalls and TJ Maxx said a number of breaches exposed more than 45 million credit and debit card numbers.
  • Payment card processor CardSystems Solutions jeopardized roughly 40 million credit and debit card accounts.

You wouldn't be able to shop anywhere because countless places have had credit card information stolen from their databases, it happened to my wife and the store Target in almost the same way. Target.com never shut down, not even for a minute.

As mentioned prior, Monoprice's reaction was exemplary imho. They lost a LOT more business then you would ever imagine by shutting down for security purposes and to aid the investigation.

Cliff notes:
- It happens more often than you think, No need to overreact.

- Monoprice reacted well to the breach.

- If you want to take some pro-active action then perhaps sign up for added protection via your CC company.

I just talked to Capital one and they have a watch against fraud charges. She is going to issue me a new credit card to ease my worries but assured me my account is safe with them.
Did any of the charges go against your account? Didn't they adjust it right away? I use my Cap one at Monoprice a lot. Sorry if you are having problems.

Ads on most large Internet forum sites are context-based now. An algorithm looks for key words in the forum thread you are browsing and shows you ads based on what the algorithm thinks is related to the thread topic. Depending on what forum you are on and what thread you might be reading, the ads can be really quite creepy.
