How can one adjust the equalizer on a mp3 player to get optimal audio?

I see 0.4, 1.0, 2.5, 6.3, 16 kHz on mine. There are also pre-settings.

I really don't have any musical ear.

Any way to "calibrate" the audio for best sound possible?

Play with the controls until it sounds the best to you!!
There is no perfect formula for everyone.

Your music will sound best with the EQ off or nuetral, and good headphones or an amp/speakers to play through. At best EQs are used to keep music from distorting a range of frequencies when playing through earbuds that can't handle them.

Have you ever used the equalizer on a Sony, Cowon or Samsung? A high quality MP3 player can provide a richer listening experience through earphones if the EQ & other sound enhancements are adjusted correctly.(BBE, Clear Bass, Clear Stereo, Dynamic Normalizer . . . . Especially those hard to reproduce low frequencies through smaller earphones)

I do feel that the equalizer on an iPod is pretty much a waste of time once you listen to an MP3 player that is built with sound quality as a top priority.

Sounds like you have a Sony? It all depends on which model you have & if you are using the supplied earphones.

I have the Sony NWZ-S639F & it sounds decent with the supplied earphones. I do like to increase the "Clear Bass" setting when I am outside or on the bus to enhance the lower frequencies that get lost in noisy environments. I don't particularly care for any of the presets.
