HTPC connected via HDMI only -- Screen Resolution Issues

So I have my HTPC hooked up to my receiver via HDMI and I don't have a DVI or VGA cable connected. Everytime I turn off my receiver windows defaults back to the VGA connection. I know this because I also use this computer to remote into for various things. The problem is while on the VGA connection I cannot set the resolution to the normal 1920x1080 and therefor the desktop/icons are all messed up.

I have an ATI 5450 card. When I was only using the integrated ATI HD 4200 the catalyst driver software allowed me to add a custom resolution even though a monitor wasn't hooked up. However, with the 5450 card it won't allow me to add a custom resolution when a monitor isn't detected. I tried running a standard VGA cable to my TV and that worked as far as the remote control issue. However, when I have that hooked up and then turn my receiver back on it sometimes leaves the VGA as the primary monitor and the TV as an extension... which is bad for obvious reasons.

I searched around on the internet a bunch and the only suggestions I found were to disable "Transient Multi-monitor Manager" which didn't help. I'm sure some others have had similar issues so I'm wondering if there is a work-around.

Thanks.

So for anyone who cares or may find this in the future, I think I figured out a solution--
  1. Connect your HDMI and set up your resolution
  2. Connect a VGA cable (hopefully your TV also has a VGA port)
  3. Go into the catalyst configuration and go to displays and click "Detect displays"
  4. Set the resolution on the second monitor to match your HDMI, you can use EDID override if needed.
  5. Now right click on the second monitor and click disable.

Now when you turn off your receiver/TV it will still default to the VGA port (at the correct resolution though). However, when you turn it back on the HDMI will return to the primary and it will re-disable the VGA. You need to leave the VGA connected all the time though. Otherwise it will go back to some random resolution.
