PT-AX100, bad lamp or failing projector?

Hi, I hope someone has seen this one before,

The other night my PT-AX100E crossed the 1800h mark and told me it was time to replace the lamp. Fair enough, but today I noticed something I've never seen before, the top of the screen has a brown streak to it that is visible when the PT-AX100E is projecting bright light. Could this be due to the lamp getting old and failing? I really don't want to buy a new lamp if the projector itself is dying since I have no warranty left.

A friend of mine, with another brand, had a similar issue (but blue, and to the right of the screen) that he thought was due to the lamp getting old, but after he bought and installed a new lamp things just kept on getting worse and to the point that it's almost unwatchable now. I really want to avoid that, a new PT-AX100E lamp is almost half the price of what a brand new PT-AX200E would cost me here! :/

Not the lamp, they just don't do that. Problems like that are attributable to either burned polarizers or degrading LCD panels.

^ What Sheridan said. For the price of a lamp and the repair you can get a brand new AX200.

Like I initially stated I've had 1800h on my PT-AX100, and I have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that it didn't last longer than the lamp itself - like you said, for the price of a new lamp and repairing it I could just as well buy a new PT-AX200. I had to send my PT-AX100 to Panasonic in the UK a year ago to get the notorious iris problem fixed, and like many I found their customer support to be excellent. I was sure that whenever I upgraded I would go Panasonic again, now though, I'm not so sure anymore

I don't believe there is a projector out there, regardless of make or technology (DLP vs LCD) that is immune from problems. This is not to say that you WILL have a problem, only that it is not impossible.

I know, I was just expecting it to last a lot longer than it apparently did, or at least I wasn't expecting it to show signs of failure until the second lamp. If I hadn't asked here for advice I would have gone ahead and bought a new $500 lamp (yes that's actually the cost here) and felt so cheated. I always thought I'd continue on the budget PT-AX* line because apart from this issue here it's really been a great ride, but maybe it's time to look at some more expensive offerings this time around then...

Given your concerns I would purchase a projector with a better warranty and/or get a 3rd party extended warranty. That way you'll be covered when your new (insert model name) fails, which it will eventually do. Likely not after only 1800hrs, though...
