Vizio VS420LF1A issue w/ 5.1 audio?

I am running a digital optical cable from my Vizio 42" VS420LF1A directly to my Sony Home Theater receiver and it will not output in Dolby Digital 5.1, even though I have my TV settings set to Dolby Digital in the menu, and the receiver is on Automatic detection of the signal. Instead the audio comes out in PCM format.

If I remove the digital optical cable from my TV and plug it directly into a device (ie: my Blu-ray player/HD Satellite box) the audio comes out in 5.1 just fine.

What could the issue be? I'd appreciate any help.

This question is better suited for the flat panel/display devices threads. This one is more cable, satellite, OTA type questions.

As stated in numerous threads, the majority of TV's will not "passthrough" Dolby Digital from external devices connected to the TV. It will only provide DD from the TV's internal tuner.

Connect all external devices directly to the A/V receiver.
