Needed: HDMI<->Fiber and/or TCP/IP media converter

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I need to carry HDMI just over 300 metres via fiber. I am seeking both leads and reports from actual users.

I'm searched here and other places, and have found a few mentions. Here's things I learned already:
  1. Go the distance. Some products seem to be short-range.
  2. Bidirectional is more fun. An integral backchannel for IR control will save me the effort of some separate scheme.
  3. The more the merrier. If there's a multi HDMI channel product, that would save doubling up.
  4. No half-{gl}ass solutions. Some products seem to need both glass and CAT5. One important reason for going to FO is to avoid ground differential issues between the buildings.

We'll have fiber-based 1 or 10 GB networking, so a real TCP/IP scheme would be fine. But I've seen some that say "ethernet" when they mean "uses several CAT5 cables" and those won't fly.

Here's what I've found so far:
  • Crestron HD-TX3-F
  • NeoPro which has a backchannel built in.

If you have an aprox price; that would help.

There must be lots more out there....Suggestions?

I have no solution for you. But be aware that the maximum TDMS bandwidth is over 10Gb/sec.

maybe this will work?

we use adtec stuff at work for putting hd over tcp/ip multicast ethernet

The Just Add Power HDMI over IP devices are a true IP based solution that would work over your Fiber connection between the buildings. The current 1G devices, or the upcoming 2G models both have a return IR channel (works with the first attached screen in multi-screen configuration). You would need to make sure they are using a Managed Ethernet switch on both ends.
