Why does Netflix on my PS3 view in 1280x720 resolution on my 1080p TV?

When I am looking at the Netflix menu screen it is in 1280x720. My tv is 1080p. Everything else on the PS3 is in 1080p, why does Netflix not show in 1080p for the menu? The PS3 can't upconvert it?

1. Netflix doesn't stream an any higher resolution than 720p.

2. I doubt very much that "everything" else on your PS3 runs in 1080p. The vast, vast, VAST majority of games run in 720p, and are not "upconverted."

3. The only things that the PS3 will "upconvert" are 480p DVDs.

4. Setting your PS3 to 1080p output means that this is the HIGHEST resolution that it will put out. It doesn't mean that it is the ONLY resolution it will put out. As mentioned above, unless it's a DVD, the resolution the media is encoded in is what you'll get.

5. Technically speaking, you actually are watching a 1080p image at all times, even if your TV says 720p (or whatever). A television has a fixed number of pixels, and always scales the image to fit the available pixels.

I know all this. But the signal from my PS3 to my TV is 1080p for everything else. Whether I stream a 720p movie, play a 640p video game, whatever, the PS3 upconverts it to 1080p before displaying it to my TV.

But for Netflix, it is 720p, the PS3 does no converting, and sends it to my TV. Then my TV must upconvert to 1080p.

For some reason it just all the sudden fixed itself without me doing anything, but the problem was that the Netflix menu was all zoomed in and cutting off a lot of the picture. Hopefully it stays fixed.

I just don't see why the PS3 will upconvert a 1280x720 video to 1080p before sending it to my TV, or a 1280x720 video game, but it will not upconvert Netflix which is 1280x720 also.

If your PS3 is up-converting 720p video games to 1080p, be sure to hold onto it because it is the only one on the planet doing that.

I think what he is saying is that some games that are 720p native have support to run at 1080p. Not all games allow this.

The short answer is, the PS3 does not have a dedicated scaler, and relies on software to scale images. If the game (or in this case Netflix) does not support 1080p, then you won't get 1080p out of your PS3, and will have to rely on your TV to do the scaling.

A younger, less cynical me might have agreed with you. But, alas, I fear that is not the case.
