So far I prefer the HD-DVD. Interesting. Boosted contrast, slight filtering, and some EE. Oh joy.

Unbelievable.

All they had to do as a minimum was use the same transfer as the HD DVD and they completely screw it up.

Thanks I was waiting for some shots before considering replacing the old HD DVD (that won't be happening now).

Gotta love the reviews claiming this as "demo material." I guess if EE is your thing....

Wow !!! Xylon, thanks for the work. The HDDVD stays put at my house. What were they thinking on the BD, DNR, EE and the HDDVD was fine already ? I guess the grain scared someone.

Universal's catalogue department strikes again. Why am I not surprised?

For once they have a master that actually looks fine, and then they go and totally mess it up. It's like The Thing all over again, except even worse.

I wish Universal would get their act together, but as long as you get a 4.5 video rating for spending $$$ on restoring a classic in 8K, and 4.0 for doing nothing, things are obviously not going to change.

Will still get rave reviews from most "professional" reviewers...HDD gave it 4.5 stars for video saying: "Technically, this presentation is leaps and bounds above the DVD presentation. This will delight videophiles and will give you great demo material to show to your friends. When they come over, show them the rocket taking off." Disgusting transfer.

Universal seems to go out of their way to screw it up. A direct port of the HD-DVD would've been fine by me. Not only did they add EE and DNR they also jacked up the contrast and color saturation. Check out the white blob of clipped detail on Mrs. Lovell's shoulder.

The "reviewers" who give trash like this a pass should find a new hobby.

Wow. Did Universal do that shortly after moving to Blu-Ray - before their catalog people knew what they were doing - and just sit on it until now? I honestly can't imagine that they just recently did this, that's some seriously rough digital manipulation there.

Granted, even if the work was done earlier, its no excuse to release it like that.

Yikes Contrast boosted too much (look at her jacket!) and EE are the 2 major offenses that immediately jump out at me. I love this movie, but if those shots are indeed representative of the video quality, i'm going to pass on this one and hope they'll put out a better version

I still don't believe that the EE on this title is too horrible - it's bad - but it's not worthy of a legend like some titles. I gave this one a 3/5 for PQ - though admittedly I didn't have the HDDVD for reference on the contrast games they played.

Edit: It's hard to determine how many of the halo's that I am seeing are related to the EE vs the excessive contrast boost.

Interesting comparison. The Blu-ray is obviously a different transfer. I would speculate Uni lost the master that was used for the HDDVD in the warehouse fire and did one of two things, either struck a new master using someone that made different decisions from whoever supervised the the transfer used on HDDVD, or reverted to an older master that they then tried to clean up. If it was the latter, then shame on them. If it was the former, I wonder if this was simply a studio supervised transfer, or if someone attached to the production supervised.

I actually picked this up a few days ago and have not taken the time to look at it. Now I'm going to have to fire up the PJ this afternoon to see what this looks like in real time.

they still could have pulled the encode from a copy of the HD DVD if push came to shove... would have been better than what they put on the bluray

my HD DVD is not going anywhere
