What firmware are you using?

Just back from Best Buy, there are now large warning signs posted on the shelves and at the check out counters that The Avatar Bluray may not run in your player without a firmware update. Gotta put a dent in the sales for someone with an older player who doesn't have a clue what firmware is nor how to update it. As for companies that don't support their legacy products with firmware updates we all have special words of advice.

Thank God for Oppo.

Just previewed it, WOW

Worked just fine on my 470 and my old 350 (have not upgraded the fw in over a year)

Avatar played without issues on my Denon BD3800 but was completely unwatchable on my HTPC using ArcSoft TMT3.
The Avatar blu-ray loaded and played, but then the picture started to breakup and completely pixelate.
Now waiting for ArcSoft to issue a patch fix.

Panny BD30, lastest firmware update, plays it fine...just looooooong load time.

You're not burning it correctly. On Mac OS X, do this:

1. Download the firmware and locate the file, which after it automatically unzips should be a .iso file.

2. Open Disk Utility from your Applications/Utilities folder.

3. If it hasn't already appeared in the lower left of the well (the white column on left of the Disk Utility window), drag the .iso file there.

4. Select the .iso file in the well and click the "burn" button.

Let's keep on topic to discussing issues relative to Avatar. The wider range topic should be taken to it's own thread. I don't want those having issues to have to search through the debate to find the answers they are looking for.

Thanks
Ron

PS: We've had several threads in this forum, the HDM software and Blu Ray software forums that discuss the larger issue of firmware updates etc. Here's just one of the threads that would be appropriate to redirect the discussion to..

NEWS: pioneer call me now. The next week the bdp 120 will have an update (29-30 or 3-4 May.)

I installed the japanese FW BP9200300 for the Pioneer BDP-120. Unfortunately, it played Avatar but still have random pop up of the timeline. Guess will have to wait for the FW Pioneer promising for next week

I just updated to the lastest firmware and still had to insert the disc 3 times before it began the excrutiating load time

hey guys dsok found out for the Samsung BD-P1400 that downgrading firmware one version (from v2.2 to v2.1) solved the timeline popup problem for us. I downgraded and just tested, confirmed. You Pioneer guys may want to try that, no guarantees though. Good luck!

So which players require the firmware update to play this film?

Has anyone tried the Denon 2500,Denon 2010 or the Sony 550?
Plays fine in a Panasonic BD55. A little slow to load. But, not outrageously slow.
man...What the bleep! Pio:320 aint playing it! Downloading the new firmware now. Not sure why Pio didn't allow firmware to go straight to the player.

So far I know from my own experience of the following:

Samsung BD-P1000 and
Philips BD-P9000

neither of these will play Avatar at all.

Avatar played fine on my older Panasonic BD30 and my Oppo BDP83. For the record, I have not updated either one recently. Why would an older player like the BD30 be able to journey to Pandora, whilst newer players cannot? What changed?

Good to know waboman. Cheers for that bud!!

Avatar plays fine on my Sherwood BDP-5004. That player was released around October, 2009, and no firmware updates have been published.
Downloaded the Euro firmware and installed and was able to play the movie flawlessly last night for a group of people. I was the only one to have seen the movie previously and it was cool to see peoples reaction to it. Pioneer USA site produced a corrupted file when it was downloaded. Thanks to Ruined for the link to get one that works!! BTW movie looked solid on my Pioneer Elite Pro-150FD.
It will not play on my Samsung 3600. Says it needs an update but there is no newer one available from Samsung.

>>Does doing the above also solve the AUDIO HICCUP issue that goes with the TIMELINE POP UP issue?

Thanks.
