This is a questionnaire for the owners of the Viewsonic Pro8100 only. It is meant to try and understand how prevalent the horizontal banding problem is on this projector and to try and understand what might make some projector's horizontal banding (HB) worse than others. Please take the time to fill it out. Please let me know if there are questions that I should add/remove. Thank you.

1. Have you ever noticed HB when watching your projector's image? (yes or no. If no, skip to question 2)

1a) What sort of scenes do you notice HB most often in?
1b) Is there anything that seems to make the HB less noticeable?
1c) Is there anything that seems to make the HB more noticeable?
1d) How many hours were on your unit when you started noticing HB?
1e) Have you notified Viewsonic of your HB?
1f) If you've had a HB effected projector replaced by VS, did the replacement also have HB (if yes, how many have you had)?

2. What is your build date?

3. What is your seating distance from the screen?

4. What is your screen size, gain?

5. Are your settings optimized for the blackest blacks or for a brighter image?

6. Have you tried using a 2nd party power cord?

7. Have you modified your projector at all? eg. new filter, shielding etc.

8. Are there any large appliances connected to the same circuit as your projector?

9. What sort of cables (and their length) are connected to your projector?

10. Is your projector ceiling or shelf mounted?

11. How is your projector plugged in? (eg directly to outlet, surge protector)

12. Have you tried a 2 prong adapter and was it effective?

13. Have you tried an Isolation Transformer and was it effective?

No HB YET!

Ditto, no HB here either. I shut off the power each night, which eliminated VB, so now all is well.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. Hopefully lots more will also answer. To those that do not have any HB, could you please answer questions 2-13 or at least tell us your build date? Thanks

Hi. Thanks for this. I joined the forum so I could contribute here. Just got this projector this week from TD and was very disappointed to see the banding problem. Went to the Internet and found that I'm not alone. I've tried a few things with no success.

1. Have you ever noticed HB when watching your projector's image? (yes or no. If no, skip to question 2)

Yes, I get horizontal banding and vertical banding. The vertical banding will fade if I let it cool and unplug it for a few minutes.

1a) What sort of scenes do you notice HB most often in?

Light colors, shades of white, light skin tones, and light blue show the banding most, but if I get close I can see that the pattern is over the whole image.

1b) Is there anything that seems to make the HB less noticeable?

No. It seems to be more prominent at certain times, but I can't correlate that to any event or action that I can reproduce.

1c) Is there anything that seems to make the HB more noticeable?

No. Except getting closer to the screen.

1d) How many hours were on your unit when you started noticing HB?

I noticed it from the minute I turned it on. I saw the banding and thought that something was wrong with my source. It didn't occur to me until later that it was a defect in the projector.

1e) Have you notified Viewsonic of your HB?

Not yet. I just got the projector and I'm still deciding whether to send it back to TD. Holding out hope for a simple solution.

2. What is your build date?

Don't know, but likely to be the most recent. Received from TD in April 2010. It's currently mounted on the ceiling and I don't want to take it down to look.

3. What is your seating distance from the screen?

~12 ft

4. What is your screen size, gain?

100 inches 1.1 gain white screen

5. Are your settings optimized for the blackest blacks or for a brighter image?

Currently more bright than black. I have tried nearly every combination of settings on the projector and have not been able to eliminate the banding. I have not updated the firmware, though and I'm currently on 2.1

6. Have you tried using a 2nd party power cord?

yes, no difference visible.

7. Have you modified your projector at all? eg. new filter, shielding etc.

no

8. Are there any large appliances connected to the same circuit as your projector?

no. The projector is in a basement that is on a separate circuit. I have tried shutting off everything in the house that I thought might cause interference. Fluorescent lights, wi-fi, baby monitor. No difference noted.

9. What sort of cables (and their length) are connected to your projector?

15 ft hdmi that is switched by a Denon receiver, power cable. Have also noticed the banding when testing with with a 6ft hdmi running to the projector from a laptop (running on battery.) I have tried turning off scaling on the receiver, and trying sources at different resolutions and 24p. No change in the banding.

10. Is your projector ceiling or shelf mounted?

Currently it's on the ceiling, but I also noticed the horizontal banding when testing the projector on a shelf.

11. How is your projector plugged in? (eg directly to outlet, surge protector)

Tried direct to wall, UPS and surge protector. No difference noted.

12. Have you tried a 2 prong adapter and was it effective?

Yes, it was not effective.

13. Have you tried an Isolation Transformer and was it effective?

No, have not tried one.

yes, this has been the only thing that has helped so far. HB is still there, but less noticeable (quite a lot actually)

Even though I tried step up converter for 220V input voltage and it didn't help, I haven't seen anyone reporting HB problems using "real" 220V input voltage...
