Are the day settings going to be updated too?

I'm confused about something...seems the night setting were updated for the new firmware but the day settings are the same.

do you you need to put contrast / brightness down to 50 when running break in slides? im currently using movie mode defaults
post #243 of 1472
I was wondering this as well. I just got mine yesterday. I put it on movie mode, turned contrast down to 70, brightness down to 50, sharpness at 0, and cell light at 14. I also turned MJC off. Are there any other settings I should change while I'm breaking it in? Should pixel shift be on or off?

Just wondering, do you have the pixel shift options when running break in slides? because i changed those settings in regular tv mode, however when running break in slides with the build in media player i do get alot of options except for pixel shift
post #245 of 1472
No, they don't seem to be in the menu when playing a slideshow

Whatever setting it is on in the main menu, will work on all inputs (as far as I can tell). I suggest turning it off if you are just running slides.

Mantis - any update as to when you'll update your CAL-DAY settings?
no one has anything on the 8000 yet?
I have an 8000. I just finished break in slides so I am ready to attempt to callibrate. I have a Eye-One Display LT that I was going to attempt my own callibration with. I have never done a callibration so it should be I am sure a long and painful process I am sure. I will use mantisboxers settings as a starting point. I think that should possibly get me close enough to manage callibration on the 8000.

Side note... I just ran my break in slides on the default (standard mode) I didnt attempt to adjust contrast or brightness. I have no IR to speak of so I dont think its a big deal. I just wanted to get closer to the hour mark so I could callibrate. This will all be for practice as I will need to swap out my set for a non buzzer.

Could mantis settings if done before break in period cause the tv to buzz or cause any other harmful things to the tv. (PN58C8000)?
Should I be using pixel shift? Does it affect the PQ in any way?
hey guys, first time poster, quick question, how much has the new firmware remedied the 3d ghosting and buzzing? I really wanna get this set, but Im tempted to go for the panny since the 3-d is supposed to be better... Thanks in advance and sorry if this question is a repeat!
I thought this was SETTINGS thread?! ( pages and only one posting of complete settings? All the other posting should be in the owners thread.

no line bleed here on my 63c8000...looks amazing even better then my pn63b590.. and it isnt even broken in yet!

As far as settings go I tried out mantis's settings and although they looked great, I ended up going with cnets settings for the c590 they just reviewed..left the 10 point off for now..atleast untill they do a review on the 8000's. this tv is great..mdj on a plasma! my dream come true..

Actually I did see some line bleed on the 63c8000 at the store today. Black text on a yellow background. However it was not as bad as the Panny vt25

Yes, there's a little. I'm very picky also, so I look for it.

You don't find that having motion judder set to standard actually causes some blur / pixelation on standard HD programming? I found that it worked great on avatar, but not good on chronicles of narnia blu ray or regular HD programming?

I can't stand the MJC, I never use it.(sorry, nothing against the people who like it) It would depend on the source. I'm sure it will add some pixelation/artifacts, due to processing.

Can you play a tralier screen and confirm it does not do line bleed like it was reported on the b860? Thanks.

does anyone find the silver bezel of the c8000 to be distracting while watching movies? I am leaning to the c7000 simply because of the bezel blending in with the background and letterbox, but im hearing the 8000 has better blacks...

The c7000 and c8000 plasmas have the same bezel its like a charcoal gray with a slight glass edge to it, I think you are thinking of the led 3d tvs by samsung..I think the 8000 and 9000 models have silver bezels
post #266 of 1472
When firmware upgrading the 7000, even though i plan to service mod and use the 8000, i only need to install the firmware once correct. Reading the PDF for the update, it looks like the firmware will correct all models so does it matter whether or not i have my model selected as the 8000 currently?

*EDIT*
Nevermind, i just left it in the 8000 mode and went ahead and did the update. Everything went through fine, tv's works great. Just need to recalibrate it.

First, I need to give credit to christberg as they were the first to discover this issue in the last firmware revision. I was not able to duplicate it at the time, but I think I found it.

Here is a description of the issue. When I first turn on my set, black levels are nearly triple normal (0.058 ftL vs. 0.020 ftL). What I am seeing is not the "full screen IR" that has been described by others on Samsung sets. I stumbled into this because my initial readings for black level were just terrible after the set had just been turned on (in Cal-Night). I thought there was something wrong with my settings, so I changed the set to Movie mode and noticed that the screen immediately go tremendously darker. Measured MLL at the expected 0.020 ftL and switched back to Cal-Night. This time the screen stayed dark and measured MLL at 0.020 again.

Intrigued, I just tried switching between all the modes while just visually examining the screen. Every 2 or 3 cycles through all the modes, my Cal-Night 0 IRE window would get much brighter (accompanied by greenish pixel noise)!! Cycling between Movie and and Cal-Night would generally fix the problem, but not always. Sometimes I would have to turn the panel off, turn it back on, and cycle. This would always fix it. I also confirmed christberg's observation that toggling the dynamic contrast setting could also make the problem go away.

On Cal-Day (basically same as Cal-Night, with Cell Light at 17) I could not get rid of the green pixel noise unless I put Gamma from +1 back to 0. Of course this screwed the picture up, so right now, I don't have a valid Cal-Day setting!!

When this problem happens, blacks are truly gray looking. Fortunately, you can work around this, it appears, by simply switching back and forth between modes. The issue will go away until you power cycle the panel. I would appreciate it if others could try to confirm this phenomenon. You may not notice it when you turn your panel on for the first time, but the difference in blacks after switching modes is dramatic. If there are enough observations, I say we bombard Samsung with complaints.

I think the big questions is, WTF?!? I am beginning to think that the anecdotal observations of sub par black levels may be related to what I am describing here. I think this is clearly an issue with the software and would not be surprised if further improvements to black levels are on the way.

I believe the firmware on these sets is jacked up. I can actually reproduce the issue with ease by turning up the brightness (see below).

Issue:
Blacks have green and blue pixel noise. This affects black level and overall picture quality.

How I discovered the issue:
I was watching Star Trek (2009) blu-ray and noticed that the black bars looked GREY. I was like WTF! So I tried changing the settings, turning the television on and off. And no avail, the overall PQ was terrible. I got up close to the television and looked at the black bars playing on the movie. They had green and blue pixels dancing in the black. I tried to take video but it didn't turn out.

How to reproduce the issue:
Option 1:
Put in any 2.35:1 blu-ray. Set picture to Standard with default settings. Turn up brightness to 57 or higher. You will then see the issue. Also it will not show up on really bright scenes. I was watching 5th Element and some brighter scenes didn't reproduce the issue.
Option 2:
Put in a test disk with a 0 IRE pattern up. Set picture to Standard with default settings. Turn up brightness to 57 or higher.

How to fix the issue:
Lower brightness to a level that is not acceptable for an accurate picture.
MantisBoxer suggests that turning off the set and or switching through the different modes also fixes the issue but I am not able to correct the issue.

I am starting to lose faith in this television due to this issue, the fact my set buzzes and I am also experiencing some SERIOUS line bleed as well (I spoke to soon regarding this topic earlier.)

Can someone else please try to reproduce this issue? I want to find out if I am the only one?

Thanks!

If you have a 7000 and have not changed your set to PNXXC8000 in the service menu, you may input these settings under Movie mode.

NIGHT

Light output for Cal-Night = 27.7 ftL / 32.63 ftL
Black Level = 0.027 ftL / 0.020 ftL

Basic Parameters:
Cell Light = 14
Contrast = 80 / 85
Brightness = 53 / 57
Color = 50 / 49
Tint = G50/R50
Gamma = +1 (This is probably the most important change to make)

White Balance:
R Gain = 20 / 25
G Gain = 25
B Gain = 35 / 38
R Offset = 25
G Offset = 25
B Offset = 26

10 Point White Balance:
Interval: R G B
1: 2 0 -3 / 4 0 -1
2: 0 0 -1 / 1 0 -1
3: -1 0 1 / 1 0 0
4: -2 0 0 / 0 0 -1
5: -2 0 3 / 0 0 -1
6: -4 0 1 / 2 0 -1
7: -5 0 2 / 0 0 1
8: -2 0 4 / 2 0 3
9: -6 0 0 / 0 0 0
10: 0 0 -1 / 6 0 7

Custom Color Space:
R 44 0 3 / 50 0 6
G 21 25 5 / 19 29 5

C 40 25 60 / 35 19 50

I used Mantis' settings as updated for cal night but I used them on cal day. They are phenomenal and my c8000 absolutely rocks. Thanks.

The 50" 7k and 8k base and picture frame are the same, silver base and black frame. I know this cuz I traded my 7k (came w/ FW 10) up for a 8k(came w/ FW 12).

The 7k had a LOT of ghosting and the blacks looked gray, especially in strd mode. My living room has a fair amount of light, but glare only seems to be slightly reduced on the 8k.

I'm starting to be convinced that there was some sort of HW change from either the early model releases or from the 7k to 8k. My 8k so far I'm not seeing ANY ghosting. I can say this confidently cuz I'm replaying my daughters movies which I know showed ghosting on my 7k. I can say I do see slight image breaking up (like what a LED would do), but no ghosting...yet. On Monday night when I watch the eve TV shows I will know for sure to what level of ghosting I will see. My 7k showed a HUGE halo on those same shows.

I saw the 60" 8k in BB and the picture frame were the same color as the base, silver. My newly delivered 8k is NOT the same and yes I was disappointed. I really liked the matching base and frame.

My 7k was configured w/ Mantisis settings and my 8k is still burning in so no setting changes. The 8k blacks do seem a bit darker, but its not calibrated so I cant say for sure.

I do hear a slight ringing when I pause the movie... similar as a CRT, but its not buzzing.

I get a free claibration from BB so I cant wait!

Upgrading so far IMO was defiantly worth it which I contemplated doing so for a few weeks.
