I tried Mantis' calibration settings and found that they worked almost perfectly for the C8000.
They are very good settings to start out with, and really the only other thing I eventually tweaked, again for my personal taste, was sharpness increased from 0 to 15. You thought the picture was good after moving a few factory settings, you owe it to yourself to at least try Mantisboxer's professional settings on your C8000 in one of your unused picture modes.

The CNET settings are for a 1080/24p film-based source, so the DirecTV receiver will probably need a different color space.

The color space defines color saturation / tint. From what I've gathered...

Auto = allows only those colors that are expected from a broadcast source (the color-space standard is slightly different for high-def and standard-def content). This is what the CNET settings use and should look great for blu-rays.

Native = provides the source material with a wider color space. Allows more pop than Auto, but colors are oversaturated / unrealistic.

Custom = allows you to use test patterns to more accurately tweak color and is used in conjunction with the "White Balance" and "Flesh Tone" adjustments. Mantisboxer's values are on the 1st page. I've tried these out, and the pictue from my HR21 looks great.

Why does everyones settings use warm2??? To me it looks yellowish. I like normal the best but im no expert can someone plzz explain why i shouldn't use normal and native color space and low dynamic ratio to my eyes it looks great.

On my set, Native is over-saturating the HR21 picture.

I've just tried the Katsmaier c7000 settings on my pn58c8000, and they just don't do it for me, at all. The white level (= Contrast) is so high that whites are crushed, and the colors are garish. Try this, instead:
Code:
Mode: Movie
Cell Light: 15
Contrast: 66
Brightness: 90
Sharpness: 15
Color: 42
Tint: default
--Advanced settings--
Black Tone: Off
Dynamic Contrast: Medium
Gamma: +1
--Picture Options--
Color Tone: Warm2
with other settings at their default values.

I had a similar experience with my last 2009 Samsung plasma (pn42b450). All the suggested settings I saw were based on Movie/Warm2, because it was claimed that this gave a color balance closest to the NTSC standard 6500K. But on my set, it looked yellow, or even orangish, and I just didn't like it at all. So I wound up using Movie/Normal on that set. On the pnc8000 now, I'm using Movie/Warm2 because in my initial survey, it looked most natural to me, on my set. But sets differ, surroundings affect color perception, the various settings interact in complicated ways, and I say that if you find something that looks more natural than Movie/Warm2, use it.

Well, I own a 58C6500 (European model) since 3 and a half weeks. After playing around a while with the settings I use the following settings for watching TV material via satellite receiver:

--Picture menu
Mode: Standard
Cell Light: 18
Contrast: 75
Brightness: 45
Sharpness: 0
Color: 45
Tint: G55/R45

Eco Solution submenu:
Energy Saving: Off
Eco Sensor: Off
No Signal Power Off: Off

Auto Adjustment and Screen submenus: [Grayed out]

Advanced settings submenu
Black tone: Off
Dynamic contrast: medium
Gamma: +1
Expert Patters: Off
RGB Only Mode: Off
Color space: Native
White Balance: [see below]
10p White Balance: Off
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: Off
xvYCC: Off (greyed out)

White balance submenu
R-Offset: 25
G-Offset: 25
B-Offset: 25
R-Gain: 25
G-Gain: 25
B-Gain: 25

10p White Balance: off (greyed out)

Picture options submenu
Color tone: Normal
Size: Screen Fit
Digital Noise Filter: Off
MPEG Noise Filter: Off
HDMI black level: Normal [grayed out]
Film mode: Auto2 [grayed out]
Screen Burn Protection: [N/A]

I am very satisfied with the picture.

For movies from my BD player (Samsung BD-P 1600) I use the mode "movie" with mantisboxers settings except in the "picture menue" options where I use:

--Picture menu
Mode: movie
Cell Light: 18
Contrast: 80
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 25
Color: 45
Tint: G50/R50

For me the picture impression is close to the picture quality in cinemas.

Hi, I recognize all the settings options in your list but where is the "custom color space"?
Is that only available in the service menu?
Thanks
Kevin
My earlier post is pertaining to "mantisboxer" settings.
Sorry for the confusion.
First, thanks to Mantisboxer and all the other who posted settings in here. Sure, each panels are different but these settings sure is a head start!

I definitely suggest the break-in, I find that my picture quality has improved, it must be that without IR, the PQ is more precise...

People who enjoy their TV set, don't go through this thread, believe the saying, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Kevin - It's Color Space set to Custom.

I applied these settings last night for Cal-Night & Day. Cal-Night is now awesome. I'm not liking Cal-day with these settings. Surprisingly there visually appears to be little difference in light output, blacks but a color is a bit different. i will need to continue to play with Cal-Day.

Great settings Mantis! Thanks!

Thanks Skremese, I found them. I did Mantis' night settings on my 7000 and it looks fantastic. I just picked it up last week and I will use these settings until I get it calibrated in a few months.

Just ordered the 58C8000, how will I know which version of firmware it has when it arrives?

Look under support ( the menu with a question mark) and then highlite contact samsung. It should show you which version you have.

Has anyone upgraded to 1022? I was wondering if the settings will look just as good if I upgrade, but more importantly is there even a reason to upgrade? I know mantis changed the setting between 1017 and 1019, so I just wanted to be sure they still look good or if they need to be changed. thanks.

Thanks for the tip. Will it most likely have the most recent firmware as it just shipped? Is this thing waterproof?

Well, I did nothing special but to reduce the cell light to 17 and the contrast to 75 at the beginning and watched usual full screenTV material (mostly the matches of the FIFA soccer world championships and golf tournaments) and a few BDs and DVDs. I do not think that any using of break in images or stuff like that is really of any advantage.

Samsung Europe has just yesterday released the firmware version 1015.1 which I assume to be equivalent to the upcoming US version 1023 (read that some guys already received their new TV sets with this firmware version). I'm still using mantisboxer's settings in the movie mode (except the modification I mentioned in my earlier post) and I can see no difference after my yesterday's firmware update. I mean the picture is still great.
I also tried out Mantis settings but at the end I turned the Colors back to native and left the whitebalance standard too. After the settings the grass just did not look green for me anymore and the blue was too bright for my taste.
Has anyone had an ISF calibration done for the 6500/6400 sets, yesterday I paid to have one done after burn in as I got a decent deal. Looking forward to getting set today

Wondering the same thing.

I haven't been back on avsforum for a few years now--it's great to see that it's an even better source of helpful information than ever before.

I'll cut to the chase. I'm planning on buying a PN58C8000 tomorrow. I've read through most of this thread and I'd like to start out by inputting Mantisboxer's calibrated settings on page 1, but I'm a little confused about how to input the settings. For instance, do I set up some kind of custom mode or do I use Movie mode? What's with the whole day/night thing? Are the updated settings in Mantisboxer's first post the most current?

Anyway, it would be GREATLY appreciated if you could make my setup easier by telling me exactly what steps I need to take to get this accomplished. Thanks!

I use MJC occasionally for certain TV programming, but leave it off 95% of the time. I find myself showing it to my friends for laughs a lot. It is kind of creepy for most material, but would probably look really nice for sports.

The filter may diminish your light output somewhat, but shouldn't have any effect on colors. If you find that your screen looks a bit dim, you might just pump up the cell light or contrast a notch or so.

With sharpness of 25, you should be able to easily notice artifacts in DVE's basic test patterns. One should really set it to 0.
