Appreciate your help. Thanks.

You have to take the HDMI control off first before you can select inputs. It's done in the setup menu - see page 63 of the manual for instructions.

I wanted to let any Samsung panel owners with apps know about an app I just discovered today called vTuner. My initial impressions are that I'm impressed with it and the selection of stations. You tell it your location and preferred genres and then just select a station. Much easier than trying to get the right code format into our 1020k.

I'm not sure if I'm getting the same sound quality or not. My panel goes to my 1020k with toslink. I plan to use this app when sitting on the back porch, where I have stereo speakers set on Zone 2.

Hi Isilvest, thanks a lot.
You mean if I want to assign the "HDMI-1" device to the "DVR" button, I will lost the HDMI control feature including the PQLS? Thx.

The only thing I can think of is possible my firewall is blocking a certain port that it needs? Has anyone else experienced this?

This may not be your solution, I had lost some stations by doing the following I solved the problem.

From time to time some channels will change their URL addresses, I assume they want you to visit their websites once in awhile.
I find the quickest way to refresh is searching & copying URLs from Shoutcast and changing them with the pioneer control page by browsing the local IP of the receiver. In Windows just click on NETWORK in My Computer then give it a second and double click on vsx1020.

Also, as you look around in Shoutcast notice how many people are listening to each station and its bitrate some station will come and go based on listener usage. I use Prism to make a web application see,

Hello again,
I would like to stream music from my laptop (MacBook Pro) into the receiver. There is a cable provided to do this from an iPhone or iPOD...but I'm not sure of the best way to do it from a laptop...would like to use the inputs on the Front of the receiver if at all possible...
Thanks for the help!

I think you need to go via RCA to one of the input in the back.

looter is right. Unless you have hdmi out of your laptop there is no connection for audio. Not familiar with MacBooks, but it's most likely you only have a miniplug out of the laptop, in which case you will need an adapter for the miniplug to the red/white RCA cables. Apparently you don't want a permanent connection, but you can leave the RCA cables plugged in and run them to a point where it's convenient to connect the laptop.

All MacBooks and MacBook Pros (but not Airs) support optical digital audio out from the 3.5mm mini jack. Use a mini-TOSLINK to full-TOSLINK cable like this one from Monoprice to hook it up to the back of the receiver.
Yes, I did see the optical cable input on the back of the receiver, and my MacBook pro does indeed allow me to plug a Toslink mini-cable into it. Sorry to be asking silly questions, but how do I assign the optical input so I know how to select it?

Just setup my 1020-k and wanted to know if it's possible to play my ps3 and listen to the tuner at the same time? I had a Denon that did this but cannot find anything in the pioneer manual about it...

An update to my own post. Geek Squad Tech took one look at my Monoprice High Speed Cables and said they were causing the audio problems. He said cables should be rated at atleast 15 GBPS to handle 3D, 1080P, and HD audio. He replaced them with Monster Cables. So far it has corrected the problem. The cables had a hefty price tag. I have been a long time reader of this very informative forum. I would just like some comments on this issue.

Sorry, yeah you can do just as you are and go digital.

It is a little hidden. You have to use Select Signal on the front panel. For my old MacBook Pro (now snappy with an SSD) I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable for video and a toslink mini adapter for audio. Then tell the 1020 to use which ever optical input you choose instead of HDMI for audio.

In my experience there is nothing I would ever buy from Monster Cable far too over priced. I'm fairly certain you can find cables with the right requirements on monoprice or elsewhere online.

Are you just talking about HDMI cables? If so then any cable that matches the HDMI version you need (High Speed HDMI 1.4?) will work. That's why it is called a standard.

http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/3d.aspx

Having said that, sometimes you just want it to work NOW and not wait for shipping, etc. And it can be very difficult to find affordable cables locally.

If it works and you've already spent the money just roll with it.
I had the Monoprice High Speed 1.4 cables rated at 10.2 GBPS. That's the highest rated cables I could find there. If you were having audio issues between a Samsung Bluray player and the VSX1020 and you thought the Monoprice cables were good enough what would you do next to trouble shoot? I was thinking about returning them anyway(30 days). The same cables are way cheaper on other websites.
I'd call monoprice and let them know. Maybe it is just a bad cable.
My whole system has Monoprice cables. Cable, XBox, SACD. When I had Pioneer tech support we swithed cables around with the same result. He said it had to be a problem with the bluray player. Talking to Samsung they pointed fingers at the VSX-1020. I have 4yr warranties on all my equipment from Best Buy. Thats when the Geek Squad came into play.

That's good troubleshooting that narrows the focus until you find the problem, eliminating red herrings.

It seems the cable was the problem. I'd take it up with monoprice or live with the expensive solution. If the monoprice cable meets Samsung's requirement for the HDMI spec, the cable was probably bad.
Thanks for your valued input. I'll call Monoprice on Monday and see what there recomendations might be concerning the cables. Thank You.
Thanks Looter... So, if I understand correctly, one of the HDMI inputs will be used and assigned to the laptop, and I will use the optical cable to provide the audio.... I think I read in one of the posts that the optical input has to be used with HDMI1...do you know if that's true?? (in which case I'll have to move some inputs around...) Or am I not getting this... I've tried the manual (again!) and IMHO, its awful.
Appreciate the help!

Bluetooth question - does adaptor allow receiver to output audio to Bluetooth headset?

Or is adapter only for input from source...

I have my TV on the first floor and my receiver in the basement. I have runs of HDMI, and RCA cables (a couple of RCA runs are used for Coax Digital Audio) and everything works well.
I recently purchased a TV with built-in apps.. ie: Netflix

The TV only has an optical digital out so my options are the following:

Run a new cable:
either a single cable or using a couple into a wall jack..

The cable alone
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

or use an existing RCA connection and get a converter

Optical Toslink to Coaxial (RCA) Digital Audio Converter
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Would the converter introduce any delay? Has anyone used this?

Monoprice doesn't have a single toslink wallplate.. only combo plates, so that would be me 3rd option.

thanks

What are you trying to accomplish? Your TV has HDMI, right? Run HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Why would you want to mess with the TV audio out?

Haven't used one and don't see why it would introduce any degree of delay, but you are going to have a delay anyway with the audio coming through the TV.

He needs the audio out for the netflix that's built into the TV (or if he uses an antenna) and doesn't want just the TV speakers.

Hey guys - has it been concluded that this model is every bit as good as it's Elite counterpart?

Sorry to post again with basically the same question, but I'd like to try to understand exactly what to do before change numerous connections... I would like to connect my laptop computer to the vsx-1020 so I can stream internet radio from the computer to the receiver. I purchased the Toslink optical audio cable from Apple, so I can use the mini-jack output from my laptop. I will connect the other end of the Toslink to the optical input on the receiver... and go back into settings to select it. But, I'm not sure exactly how to do that?? Some of the posts suggested that the optical input needs to used in conjunction with HDMI, which I already have assigned to something else. Sorry to be dense, but the Manual is awful and I'm trying to avoid a long phone call with Pioneer...
Thanks!

Hi FM Fan,
If you go to your Operators Manual or Op Instructions via Pdf
you will see that your answer's start on page 40 "Input Setup" and continues on page 41 (Basic Setup) which shows an Input Setup Diagram Box.
You can select Optic 1 or 2 Inputs to link to TV/Sat, DVR/BDR, Video, HDMI 1 etc,

Good Luck,
Bud B

Hello, I have a basic setup with HMDI 1 set to the TV (input to the receiver with 1 HDMI cable going back to the TV). I recently setup a PS3 to HDMI 5 (on the front) but now I get no sound from the TV although the picture is fine. I performed a reset and ensured multi-zone wasn't on and checked that speakers A was on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

First, a quick THANK YOU for the help...I was able to get my laptop to play through the receiver! My wife is now thrilled that she can listen to AccBroadway on her laptop, and choose which songs she wants to hear. I have one more SIMPLE question... is there an easy way to increase the bass or treble if a particular song needs it; without going into the Manual Setup and dealing with sine waves and Fourier transforms! I guess I'm still used to old audio receivers, where life was a bit simpler...
Thanks again!

LG also has vTuner.. I agree it's much easier than having to deal with figuring out which stations works well with the 1020K.
I'm deciding the best way to get my toslink to the basement so for now I'm using the TV speakers and the sound is pretty bad... hopefully the toslink will take care of that.
as a side note, I'm surprised vTuner doesn't give info on the currently playing song.
