First off, can iTunes and iPod even handle 24/96? if so, what format would be best to convert to?

I heard if you use FLAC with Rockport, you could. However, please do not quote me on this.

You can easily use Apple Lossless. It will be 16/48 though.

I'm hoping to keep them at 24/96

itunes and apple lossless will do 24/96. You can convert the flac using Max. I don't know if the ipod will support 24/96.

Yep. At least itunes says it is 24/96. I'm on a Mac, if you are on a PC that might explain it. But I don't even know if Max runs on a PC.

I ripped a 280mb song using MAX's WAVE (Linear PCM) at 24 bits and it gave me a 550mb WAVE file. Is that right?

If you started with flac, and converted to wav, that sounds about right. Some files compress better than others - depends on the content.

Thanks all! I converted the FLAC-HD in MAX to Apple Lossless (which kept the 24/96; i thought it would downsample to 16/44, so i was happy it kept it) for listening on my computer and streaming to my home theater. I then created a 16/44 WAV using iTunes for my iPod. All is good, everything sounds great and the file sizes are huge! Thanks again!!
