A couple of people just posted impressions of the PM-1s today in the dedicated thread for them at Head-Fi.

I wouldn't count on them being virtually the same for that difference in price. Probably bound to be some differences, or why would anyone want to spend the extra few hundred dollars?

Well, if they are like all the other high-end planar magnetic headphones of recent years, I will wait a couple of years for the recalls and revisions to get sorted out. The PM-1 Rev. 3 is probably going to sound great!

I feel similarly... Especially considering how long it took them to finally settle on design issues. This thing was supposed to have been released last fall. I would like to add a 2Nd planar though, and I love that its an American company.

Seriously, never buy serial number one or rev 1 of a product.

^^
That's the very reason I didn't buy Michelanglo's "David" 1.0

It's not really revision one of the PM-1s anyway. They've been using beta testers over at Head-Fi and revising it prior to the first mainstream production release.

Yea but seriously, when was the last time you saw a high end headphone get a bad review from users at Head-Fi? Or anywhere else for that matter. Im not sure how trustworthy those "reviews" or testings are considering the people over build up products even before anyone has ever heard them. Take the upcoming HE-560i's for example. Which I have actually heard and would NOT pay more money for over the HE-500's.

Looking at the site it looks like slight cosmetic changes and the box. I thought I remembered reading that the drivers were exactly the same.

My understanding is that they were not previewing it, but actually beta testing and offering feedback.

I'll cross my fingers that you are right, although it doesn't make sense to me. LOL

I dunno, that box may be worth $400.00...

^^^^ Wow. Wish manufacturers that do that would lower the price of the headphones and give me a cheaper box. That box IS beautiful but seriously, its just going to go in storage.

OPPO is going to do that in June with the PM-2

True, but the Fancy box isn't the only thing the PM-2 will lack.

Maybe they will use the same drivers, and they will stick some tape in it like the HD558 vs. the HD598 smile.gif

That would be nice. Doubtful, but nice.

PS: I know I dont have to mention that there is more than just a piece of tape differentiating the two Senns. That and the fact that the 558 is actually the better sounding headphone (at least to my ears). wink.gif

Oh come on you can store your memorabilia in that box? Pictures any one, expensive watches, fountain pens, diamonds, gold you name it biggrin.gif

From what I have read on Head-Fi, the beta testers definitely had a lot of input on the development of the headphones. But with so many opinions, ultimately it was up to Oppo to decide what changes they wanted to make. At least Oppo was listening to them. That's probably more than most manufacturers would do.

We'll have to wait for some more impressions to know for sure how good they are. There are a few impressions of the production version from the NY Head-Fi meet. Unfortunately, none of those impressions seemed too good. I hope to have a chance to listen to them soon.

The drivers are the same, though, according to what I've read. The difference appears to be the slightly different enclosure, which is why removing the tape gets those headphones pretty close in SQ.

I used to own the 598 and currently own the 558. Drivers are the same but they dont sound the same - with or without tape.

There is a lot of room for Oppo to make the PM-1 and PM-2 different with or without using the same drivers. Just look at all the Fostex T50RP based headphones out there.

That's why I 'modded' my first over the ear headphones, Senn hd 555

I spend too much time on the internets getting ideas...
